Glad they turn this into a museum. I remember when it was a library. I took reading classes in the basement when the "Reading Center" was there. Thanks so much for sharing.

Lived near Danville for 17 years. The deepest Southern accents in VA are in the Danville region and SW VA.

I'm glad to know that Danville and SW VIrginia still retain their Southern accents. I remember being at a gas station in Northern Virginia (NOVA) off of I-95. After pumping my gas, I didn't receive a receipt, so I went inside to have them print one for me. I stood in a line. A woman behind the counter eventully asked if she could help me. I replied, "Yes, ma'am." I remember several people turning around and giving me a strange look. You would have thought I said a curse word. I couldn't believe their reaction. That's when I knew that NOVA is now YANKEE-DOODLE LAND, Y'ALL!!!

@@texasson7950 haha, true. The geographically southern section of VA is still strongly Southern in culture. The one good thing about NOVA is that it pumps lots of $$$ into the state, making VA one of the wealthier states in the country

That bag on display in the upstairs hallway (that looks like a pillow) is a carpet bag. Carpetbaggers were people from the north who came to the south to profit by exploiting the economic problems during reconstruction. They often carried bags made from scraps of carpet.

It’s not VA, but if you go 20 minutes outside of Danville you’ll hit a small town called Milton. A very old town, full of history

Chris, one reason I love to follow you is because I also visited historic sites for thirty years with two dear friends.. Ninety percent of your posts are of sites where we too visited. We would visit Civil War battlefields and historic Colonial and Antebellum homes. At each site we would enjoy our brandy toastes. We had battle maps that indicated where each of our Great-grandfather's units were deployed. Anyway, our interests are so similar and I essentually revisit a site nearly every time I open your posts. As for the Sutherlin mansion... twenty years ago I was the architect for renovations and restorations, there. There have been some places that I never knew about until you educated me. One in particular is Lee Hill along the Fredericksburg line. Can't wait to visit it. Once again thanks for your interest and passion in history and architecture. Ps. When Richmond fell and the Confederate capitol moved to Danville few are aware that the state capitol moved to Lynchburg.

Awesome hearing things like that are what keeps me going. Thanks for the info about the Capital being moved to Lynchburg, will have to mention that next time I'm out that way. Plan on visiting Sayler's Creek in the near future as I had relatives that fought there. Thanks for watching!!

@@VATravels I am not sure how close you can get to the house, could probably fly drone over it. Interior of Hawkwood was gutted by fire in the 1980s. Boswell’s Tavern is nearby, you might want to see if there’s a tour there for Historic Garden Week in April of 2023…..thanks!!
