Sustainable Livelihood and Agroforestry for Conservation of Biodiversity

This is a story of IDEP “Sustainable Livelihood and Agroforestry for Conservation of Biodiversity in Aketajawe National Park Terrestrial Corridor” program, looking from the eyes of beneficiaries and stakeholders involved. This is a one-year program in four villages of North Maluku, east of Indonesia that aim to increase awareness on conservation of biodiversity, increased skills and capacities on agroforestry for a sustainable livelihood. With support of Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) and Burung Indonesia, IDEP learned together with communities to bring about very real change felt by the beneficiaries. The existence of an economically sustainable source of livelihood, which has increase their income, thus could support the finance of the family’s children's education. In terms of health, families are able to produce healthy food from the KPK's garden, and the natural environment is maintained through the use of materials organic, and practicing sustainable management. This is a start of a very exciting yet challenging journey to protect and conserve biodiversity in the “Land of Spices”.
