Antonio Álvarez Alonso was born in Martos in the province of Jaén but has always been considered a native of Cartagena because it was in Cartagena where he composed his best-known works and where he died. He wrote more than 20 zarzuelas in collaboration with famous lyricists of the time, but he will always be remembered for being the author of "Suspiros de España", still, which most of us always relate to in the song of our Concha Piquer "In Strange Land".
This is how men and women feel who sigh for their land, for any land they leave behind due to situations and circumstances they did not choose:
"Suddenly, a gramophone was heard
Shut up everyone, I said, and a gasp was heard, which made us sigh
The joy stopped, everyone was crying, no one was laughing.
And listening to this music, there in a strange land,
they were our Suspiros, Suspiros de España."
