Man I LOVED this woman! She DID NOT get ANY of the credit that she deserved!!!!

No other skater can move as well as Surya; backward, forward, up, down, over, around, inside-outside along with her powerful jumps and spirals without falling.

By far my favorite program of hers

Nicole is toooooo young to judge anybody. If Surya was sooooooo bad on the ice, she would have been removed years ago. They just can't ACCEPT the fact that Surya has athletic skills they NEED to aquire.

My only complaint is that she was moving so fast, sometimes it was hard to keep up! That was some crazy energy!

She had confident jumps and a horrilble skating. Basically what she did on ice was not figure skating. You could have called it ice jumping, on-ice athletics, skate acrobatics but not figure skating

It totally lacks artistry

She’s a great athlete but not artistic nor graceful which is a necessary in figure skating. Surya should have pursued gymnastics. Figure skating is not just about jumps. Watch Michelle Kwan, Nancy Kerrigan, Kristi Yamaguchi .😊

'Areas of her skating'. They're not even talking about skating. They're talking about dancing. Her skating is perfect. If they had competitions that were solely about the ability to skate and not ice dancing, she would have won every one. That's the kind of skating I want to see.

I have never seen such energy and enthusiasm in a skater. She was skating with pure joy and you could see she loved making the crowd cheer. She was a great skater and had her own style and who cares about the tights, focus on her skating ability.

So the commentators said they wonder if she can really skate but she nailed a triple lutz wow

Only thing lacking...is commentary ability to SEE your greatness. but we see it and we saw it. Amazing Grace !

Amazing faultless performance, you are born to do it. One of the best female figure skaters if not the best.

The commentators meant that Surya used to skate on flats (and to generate the speed only by crossovers or, worse, pushing with the toe-pick), which is considered to be a bad technique. Figure skating is supposed to be about using the edges to generate speed and incorporating moves in the field (mohawks, choctaws, 3-turns, etc.) between the elements while sustaining flow and speed. Surya did her best to improve, though. Excellent skate here!

I don't see how "jumping like a gymnast" can be a bad thing. Surya is one of the most powerful female skaters I've seen.

Sounds like the woman commentator is hoping for the worst even before the she started and only makes her self look more negative as she continues. Glad the skater brings so much more hope, charisma, and love to the sport of ice skating and is able to share her adoration for the sport for us all to watch. Thank U so much Surya Bonaly

Her skating was as good as your spelling and the jumps were an under rotated disaster here

what's so ridiculous regarding the criticisms of Surya is that if her name were changed to Plushenko, she'd be getting perfect scores. But with the type of body and power she has, it's not really possible for her to go about as a dying swan. It would just look freaking weird. But she skates cleanly and if you go look at Plushenko rip up the ice, you really have to wonder about the sexual stereotypes in ice-skating because she never really gets credit due to her. But on other hand, Johnny Weir had the reverse problem because he didn't rip up the ice with sloppy jumps and poorly executed turns and bad sit spins, he got marked down for being technically great. So the judges have preconceived stereotypes and decide the outcome based on personal prejudice. Nice. Of course had she been Russian, that probably would have helped a bit... but she was French.

The female commentator is really scathing.

I heard Surya could not get tight in her skin color back than... so what was she to do... we "tan" tights? That would look gross and weird. The crowd got WILD by the second half of performance. You don't see such reaction much these days. Surya was one of the best performers of all times. I bet she was the type of a girl who can be the first on dance floor in a club and make everybody dance.

And the white female announcer starts this black queen's introduction by stating that her skills are "lacking".....

This had to be one of her best seasons, by far.

Surya always had good artistry, what held her back, actually what allowed the judges to hold her back were the telegraphed entrances. It was a great performance. But yeah the snide in Sandra's voice was annoying.

Sandra Bezek is just mad because she can't do the flips. Surya is the only one who can.

surya brought figure skating to another level like what competitors try to achieve today but only in technical terms. she had a terrible lack in artistry though she would have been able to achieve it. Here for example there is a total absence of significant spins or choreography. She needed more skills and less proud

Exactly what I was thinking 🤔

For once I would like to see a Bonaly video on youtube that doesn't have a ton of comments talking about her race and how people are being racist and that she was treated unfairly. Bonaly is a good athlete and she's hard working, strong and can do amazing jumps(those backflips of hers are legendary). HOWEVER; figure skating is also an artistic sport and she does lack something in that aspect compared to alot of others. Every figure skating expert says so, and I'm no expert at all, but even I notice that her artistic skill is a bit lacking (but this peeformance is a bad example. She did pretty great here). And being that she is my favorite skater, it's a bit hard to admit. So when people comment on that, don't just assume it's about racism. There are racist pricks everywhere, but that doesn't mean every skating judge out there is one. When multiple people have the same opinion, it's usually some truth to it. She may not have raked in those gold medals and people says she's unappreciated, but she did get alot of silver medals, she won a ton of championship, she's a legend in figure skating and a fan favorite. She had and still have an amazing career and she could probably still do alot of the jumps as opposed to other retired figure skaters. So she's not under apreciated at all in my book. Tl:dr so lets just enjoy these videos of her. Bonaly rocks!
