A piece of advice I once heard from a search and rescue dog team handler: If a search dog ever comes upon you, and you are not in fact lost, do not feed the dog anything, simply praise the dog. When the handler catches up tell them that you are not the person they are looking for and you have rewarded the dog only with praise.

I've been a regular camper and hiker in the sierras for over 25 years now. I learned lots of things from this video but i can tell you that you would need to be up in the Sierra at the right time of year to take advantage or be at a disadvantage of many things in this video. Especially the edible plants, water sources, dry tinder, snow or no snow, wildlife threats, rain etc. He is also on the western slopes of the sierra which contains numerous reservoirs and lakes. Most of the creeks and rivers will lead to those areas and to populated areas. In reality the bad things to worry about in the Sierra would be the cold, severe accidental injury, mountain lions, rattlesnakes, bears and serial killers.

I'm an avid hiker, though I've only been doing it for a few years now, I know how to deal with animals, plants, weather, or injury. The thing I am most afraid of as a small female hiking alone, even though I am always armed in one way or another, is people. People are unpredictable, you don't know why they're out in the wild- they could be a hiker like you and the chance encounter could lead to a life-long friend, but they could also be a serial killer, an escaped convict, or someone living off-the-grid who doesn't want anyone to know their location. Wilderness isn't safe or easy, but at least its predictable.

Man if Les ever starts another series, I’d love for him to come up into eastern Oregon High Desert country, one of the most beautiful and dangerous places I know, filled with native and homestead ruins, more rattlesnakes than people by a hefty factor, 70 years of (suspected) Satanist attacks on cattle, little food and next to no water. Many pioneers died out there, and many have since. I dunno, I think it’d be cool to see what Les would do to survive in the rimrock country!

I know if I were lost and unprepared, I would be scared to death and feeling like I needed to hurry to find the way out because every second it gets closer to dark is one second closer to staying another night. I'm sure that's what's pushing everyone on in that situation- they're racing nightfall and trying to avoid accepting they're so lost they're truly not getting out as planned. I realize it would be better to as you said- stop and take note of what you have, make a plan- but man it would be so hard to do that. I've only been lost once and it was just in the woods behind my own house- but it was scary as hell. only lasted about an hour and I figured out where I was but- it really surprised me how hard it was not to panic. And I wasn't even in much danger- basically no danger- but when you don't know where you are it's scary- even if you're close to home.

Les, thank you for mentioning autistic children. I have an autistic daughter and she loves to go out deep in the woods with me, hiking and seeing waterfalls. I can easily see how an autistic child could run off and get lost in less than a minute if a parent turns their back just for a number of seconds. Many autistic children are more or less non-verbal, which you mentioned, which obviously complicates things in a SAR situation. Another thing I would like to mention is to go ahead and attempt to call 911 on your cell phone. It is on a different network than your cell phone provider and although it may not connect or show a signal, it may ping the 911 system, showing what area you are in.

I can't stress enough how important area research is via the map, topo map, etc. As someone who hikes with my girlfriend regularly, often in hilly or mountainous terrain - researching the area you will be in is a necessity. If you have a compass, think of how important it is to know that the nearest city is NE from where you will be hiking. Or that all the trails you will be on are trending in a SE line up a mountain. Mark where you start, mark safe trend lines you can follow in case of emergency. There are also pocket GPS now that draw lines as you hike and you can follow them back. It's 2020 folks... take ten minutes out of your day to be prepared. Family or loved ones can depend on this. It's funny, because there has been plenty of times we both think we are going the right direction and a quick check of the compass proves wrong. Easy to get turned around as you loop up mountains under tree cover.

Skiidzman I have a very bad, bad sense of direction, so I never go anywhere unsafe alone 😂. Simple things can make a difference. I would hate the idea of making some rescue people risk their lives to come and get a cretin like me lost somewhere... just because I was selfish and unprepared.

Mr. Stroud, you were my primary inspiration when I was young to join the Boy Scouts, and through them I was able to become an experienced backpacker, my favorite expedition being 12 days in the back country of New Mexico. Second favorite being a 6 day canoeing excursion in Minnesota. Being from Alabama and getting to experience different climates, terrains, and long forgotten wilderness that I would never have dreamed of. For that, I thank you.

I've lived and grew up in the Seirra Nevada Mountains for over 23 years. People get lost and injured in these mountains every year. A large majority of our rivers here run from east to west, all of which lead into only a few larger rivers before reaching the delta. If you find yourself lost or in unfamiliar territory, find a river at the bottom of the ridge your on and follow it. A fire will also be your saving grace, Signaling, warmth, food and a way to cook and sanitize water to stay hydrated.

I think personally, a few grubs or larva for bait, the center strands of that paracord tied into one long line, and a gorge hook and I'd have been fishing before I tried making deadfalls. Crayfish, frogs, minnows, water snakes, snails... So many options for protein around water. Squirrels would be nice but fishing sometimes is a goldmine when it comes to providing protein.

Really clever way to light a fire. Just to be clear, did you have to leave the battery and all the plastic in the fire? Wouldn't it be possible to quickly retrieve it once you get a flame. Or do you think it would be possible to sit it next to the kindling and use a stick to flick the cotton off once it gets going? Thanks for many years of inspiration, you're a genuine legend!

If ever you're using an electrical device like that to start a fire... strip the very tips of the wires and cut/bend the strands until there's just one sticking out. It will get MUCH hotter faster and without as much heat in the rest of the device. Try not to sacrifice the unit if possible. Batteries can explode. And if you happen to be out doing drawings/sketches... pencil lead (especially from mechanical pencils) is even better. Set it up for you to short out across the graphite. I normally wrap one wire around the graphite and push the wire to touch it to the other. Touch them until the graphite starts smoking. Then let off. Do 2 more times. It should have stopped smoking and now is good for making fire. Gotta do this to keep the graphite from shattering when it burns the impurities out.

Bush panic has been described by so many who got lost even near their home. Some practicing a few basic skills in the safety of your backyard and local greenbelt could make it just a rough few days in the bush, rather than a real life or death struggle. Know how to and practice building a fire a few different ways, purify water, and learn some local medicinal and edible plants. Taking the time while safe could save your life if you're ever lost, also great family learning activities.
