It is actually an algae, chlamydomonas nivalis. I don't know how effective wiping off the surface is... those blooms can go almost a foot into the snow.

Hey you are my hero growing up. But understand that youtube does not like when you upload tons of small videos without making diffrent thumbnail and over saturating your page. I get it's great on T.V but in youtube it's a little diffrent. Keep going on you are the best at this and always will be.

Is eating snow as-is the last option? I was always told that if possible, boil the water first to kill any nasties then let it cool before drinking it.

It's more about conserving energy and hydration than worrying about nasties. Snow can actually dehydrate if not melted first

If pink snow was all you had available, would boiling render it safe to drink?

Like quite a bit of food poisoning, if there is something fungal or bacterial in high enough concentration, it is likely producing something toxic when ingested. These are often still there even if cooked. I suppose I could explain it like this... if you spilled dish detergent into your soup, it'll still not be safe to eat no matter how much you cook it. If a fungus or bateria is dangerous, its often still very harmful even if its dead and no longer reproducing.

Short answer yes but because it was always safe to consume. The pink algae is just fine without sanitation but melt the snow so you save the calories heating your body back up.

I thought we weren't supposed to eat snow because it lowers your core temperature and instead, you should melt it and drink it not as cold.

I think its a balancing act. When you are hiking alot and getting hot and sweaty, eating snow will cool you down and give you some water. If you're stationary at a camping spot with a fire going then melting it is the way to go

I thought it takes more water to process snow than you get out of it , thus it dehydrates you.

  • @elfarlaur

that's salt water. Snow melts and becomes regular fresh water in your mouth, no additional processing needed.

@@AgentXRifle oh in cracking up. I shouldn't be though. I've had my ass pulled from the fire too many times. Perfectly working truck that just stops and seconds later after an SUV runs the red light my tuck just goes again. That's the newest one. In fifty years I've retired 3000 guardian angels. Many are in the nut hut I'm sure
