We're looking at a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona in Orange Paint. The car comes with the 426 CI V8 engine, and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Bob Jennings. Bob’s had this car since 2019. Bob loves the “Wing Cars” and this one is a “Benchmark” because of this cars originality and has less than 40,000 original miles. He shares how this car was put away for many years and some of the things he had to do to get this one running again.

I was 12 when I saw my first winged car in 1970- a Superbird in Lime Light green. I almost jumped out of the back seat and screamed 'Dad, a Superbird!! We gotta buy one of those!!!'. My mom said 'Norman, he's right. I could hang the laundry on that thing and get the clothes dry in about two minutes!'. She had me hopeful for about 2 seconds until the reality of living in a non-car enthusiast family hit home once again. The HOLY GRL licence plate just about sums it up. Awesome video Lou!!!

There were a few of those around when I was a kid. They always drew a crowd at the local drive-in. We had a Daytona with the 440 back in the early 80's. Muscle cars weren't much in demand at that time. It didn't bring much money. That's one I wish we had kept in a barn.

What a spectacular 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona we have here as a reference! Its stylized and aerodynamic wedge-shaped beak, which further lengthens its large front, along with its large tail spoiler, are quite reminiscent of the contemporary Plymouth Superbird. For having been stored for about 40 years, it is in good condition; even with its original stickers! Well, although it took effort to make it work again due to its unused state. By the way, thanks to the link you left, I went to see the video where Mr. Jennings explains the differences between a Superbird and a Daytona... Great car and video, Lou!

Beautiful car Lou. Always like seeing the unrestored original cars. Especially when it's a Hemi Daytona Charger. I had a friend whose dad almost bought one brand new, but went with the regular Charger R/T instead, he said that the Daytona was like 1,000 dollars more than the Charger R/T and he just couldn't afford it.

I remember when the Daytonas and Superbirds came out as a 10 yr old kid. It was like they were from another planet. We were a Mopar family and I was a car nut, so Daytonas and Superbirds made me especially proud when they dominated NASCAR. My Chevy and Ford buddies had to eat their words. That one is a rare beast, for sure! I think it is in capable hands and will be cared for with love...and patients. Thanks for the memories, Lou.

And a BENCHMARK video! Thanks Lou, it is REALLY nice to see an original in such nice condition!! And I think, this was early (prior to January 1, 1969) manufacture, due to the non-locking steering wheel? Can anyone verify this? Always a pleasure Lou! 🙂

It might be stock, but I don’t think I could keep those hubcaps on it. Other than that, I like it as-is, it’s cool to see one essentially unrestored.

Interesting that he says the car has factory front drum brakes. The Super Birds had factory power front discs. Every article I've ever read including factory literature, say the 69 Charger 500, which the Daytona started out with, say power front disc brakes are std. Maybe this was a really early build?? Who knows. And I like that he still has so much trouble with the Hemi being coldblooded. They were, and the 1s with a solid cam were even worse to tune. Chassis/dyno tuning was the only way to get 1 right. Mr. Norm's was the place to have that done. My dad took his brand new 71 Cuda 340 to Mr Norm's to have tuned because he said the car never ran right with the dual breaker distributor. He told me that there was a line of Hemi cars, including 2 winged cars waiting to be tuned. Dad's car turned out to have the wrong springs in that dizzy. The tech dad talked to said that at the time, Chrysler was putting a ton of time in the 4bbl 440s because of police use, but was ignoring Hemi and even 440 3bbl cars because they were slated for scrap due to emissions. So what you bought, was what you got. Tuning was your problem.

This is a Holy Grail Hemi Daytona! Vitamin C orange and a survivor. Originality is great, but this car needs fat radials on magnum or NASCAR wheels. Those hubcaps and skinny tires were meant to be tossed and replaced.
