Always my favorite Camaro, 70½ RS/Z28! My dad and his brother worked at the Norwood, Ohio Fisher Body plant, where all the first 2 generations of Camaro and Firebird were built. Can't say for sure that dad or Doyle worked on this Z28, as they were building them around the clock, 3 shifts a day, sometimes 6 or 7 days a week! Enjoy it, I like the idea of keeping it a survivor😊

¡Saludos cordiales, Lou!

Sure brings back some good memories, Dave & Lou. Spring, 1976 I had a '71 Camaro S. S. - red with a black vinyl roof only trying it out for a day. Had the 396 and a Hurst shifter, and no power steering! Also had studded snow tires, but didn't when I returned it to the dealership. Yikes, those were some days...

HI Alan, I think it would look good restored, and I think it looks good this way too, Lou
1971 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28. The Chevrolet Camaro would be introduced on September 22, 1966, for the 1967 model year as a success to other Pony Cars of the 1960s, such as the Studebaker Avanti, Pontiac GTO, Plymouth Barracuda, Ford Mustang, and Oldsmobile 442. It was released with the standard variant V8 (350 V8), RS/SS 396 (396 V8), and the Z/28 (302 V8). It was produced for 2 model years, lasting until 1969, which is arguably the most popular model year for the first gen Camaro. The Chevrolet Camaro was so popular that it would get constant upgrades from other companies, such as General Motors' Yenko and COPO (Central Office Production Center). The Yenko Camaro was introduced in 1968-1969 and only for 1968-1969 with a 427 Cubic Inch Chevrolet Big-Block V8 from the 1967-1969 Chevrolet Corvette C2/C3. This car sold around 600,000 units for the three model years in total (Each selling around 230,000 to 240,000 units), making it just as successful as other cars, but NOT the Mustang (That car sold over 1 million units in just 2 years). It would eventually be succeeded by the 1970 Chevrolet Camaro to 1981 Chevrolet Camaro, gaining more/less power due to many variations (1973 Oil Crisis, 1972 SAE Gross to SAE Net, etc) and getting many facelifts (First facelift for the car was in 1974). For 1970-1973, it was introduced with a more "happier" design at the front and new taillights at the back unlike the square taillights for the 1966-1969 model years. They also kept all of the trims seen on the First Gen, excluding the COPO/Yenko for 1970 and the "Super Sport" trim for 1972, which wouldn't come back until the mid-1990s. The 1970-1973 Chevrolet Camaro made even more horsepower than the first-generation counterpart and costed around $2700 to $3200 depending on base/trim options ($21,000 to $25,000 in today's money).

AWWWWW man....my 2 big brothers-Lou and Davey-right there, man. WHOOSH......WHOOSH>>>>>THWACK! As my very floppy DC sneakers get yanked off my easily rendered unconscious😵, chick crazy😜, tubesocked stocking feet and catapulted across that golf course to land against a big oak on the other side 😂lol!!!! Something tells me you 2 guys would have your little bro in his stocking feet constantly lol🤣🤪. You 2 guys look like you are having some awesome mischevious fun, Lou. This particular Camaro is really one of my favorite cars you have featured, big brother. She is such an awesome and natural survivor. That blue paint chipping just adds to that fact. My favorite view is the rear 3 quarter view with her swoopy hips going into those awesome round taillamps....totally knocks me out cold lol 🤪. When you opened the door, I could smell her, you know? Awesome. So good to hear that Davey isn't planning on restoring her but keeping her as the survivor she is. Ironic that is even more radical. Thanks for all this inspiration big brother, JV Johnny ⚾

This is perhaps the cleanest and sleekest generation of Camaros (early 2nd gen). Always preferred the styling as compared to the popular 69'. Had I been a young man in the early 70's I probably would've bought the more attainable SS 350 in Citrus Green (my favorite color). Awesome video Lou, keep em' coming.

Another great video Lou and great car. Earlier this month it was the Tbird in Scottsdale now this camaro another great memory. I owned a 71 Camaro back in the late 80s, mine was just a plane jane Camaro but I had a hopped up 350 I put in it, I had the 4 speed and mine was white with black racing stripes. Those are such great cars to have fun in, I always got so many looks in that car. I like many wish I still had that car but had to sell it 90 to help pay for college, I think I sold it for $3500, its hard to touch a decent camaro that era for prob 30K now, especially a split bumper Z like this one. Keep doing what your doing its golden Lou 🙂

Hi Nicky, I'm pretty sure Dave stepped on it, Lou
Something's not right about this car, at least according to the Trim Tag. The "777" interior trim code is Sandlewood, not black. The "78" body color code is Rosewood. As noted by @Jim McCune, the build code "04E" indicates fifth week of April, 1971. Also, the throttle pedal is hinged off the throttle arm rod - itself hinged off the firewall - not off the floor, like it should on a Z28 from '70-'72. Lou, you might want to point out these things to Dave. To the best of my knowledge, the 1970 and 1/2 Camaros were so called due to the very late introduction of the model year (assembly began in February 1970). There is a similarity between 1969 and 1970 - both years saw major workers' union strikes, causing a delay in the introduction of new models. I don't know if the strike-caused delays ultimately originated the "and-a-half" moniker or not, but I believe this 1971 Camaro doesn't qualify.

Todays whiners complain about todays Camaros, Trunk space, can' t see etc. This 70' Camaro has just 6.29 feet of space. I have a 17' SS 6 speed Camaro, my trunk space is over 9 feet but its deeper and more narrow. Back when this came out few people bitched and moaned about stuff like that. People were driving Custom vans and pickup trucks with curtains in the rear windows, but people knew how to use mirrors. Mustangs with almost a flat horizontal rear windows and a passenger side mirror was still an option. Unfortunately people today are wimps, spoiled and complain. My 69' Roadrunner had no passenger side mirror at all I looked over my shoulder. In the 70s and 80s I also had a 67' Ford F100 Stepside pickup with a 6 foot bed, 352 v8 with a 4:11 rear. I had curtains in the back window I could open or close. I kept them closed most of the time because I liked the seclusion. But I also had full length truck mirrors on driver and passenger side, I learned to use them and could see fine. Today my Camaro comes with Passenger side mirror standard equipment. I can see my flanks with no problem at all after install 2 inch spot mirrors on each one. A whole different breed of consumer back then than today. And back then most people would not want to be seen in a foreign car or you were a square.

Strange things going on here. The trim tag says it’s a ‘71. It has high back seats….not available on the ‘70 1/2. The “C” badge on the header is chrome-only available on the ‘70 1/2. It’s not a ‘70 1/2.
