My brothers on Ecmo right now after going through cardiac arrest and was on cpr for 45m. They had to use Ecmo to save his life and after due an emergency stent procedure. It’s day 3 and my family are praying every day for his recovery and as of now everyday the nurses tell us good news that he’s getting better. He’s starting to open his eyes and squeezing they’re hand following commands so we’re all very hopeful. Thank you so much for this video it gives me and my family hope for the future.

How is your brother doing? I hope he’s made a good recovery. The exact same thing happened to me October 21. I had a heart attack which brought on cardiac arrest. I was down for 43 minutes, CPR and 10 zaps of the defibrillator. I was in a coma for 4 weeks. Hospital for 10. I only learned today what ECMO is as I was wondering and googling what these scars on both sides of my neck and both sides of my groin were actually caused from. Fascinating.

Hey, do you mind if I ask some questions. As I understood it ECMO is used as a last resort very intensive treatment that basically temporarily replaces the most important organs of our body. So your illness must have been very severe. I hope you are doing great now but do you still have lasting effects from Covid? I want to find out how hard the treatment of Covid is because there are some people that still underestimate the severity of the disease with claims that if it comes to the worst there is still very invasive treatment options like intubation and ECMO. I wish you the best.

ECMO saved my husband’s life 3 years ago and his quality of life is one of the success stories. His treatment was due to a mitral valve rupture in his heart. He did have issues with ICU psychosis when in hospital, which is common when time is spent in an induced coma. Today he is physically recovered even though he does have some permanent heart damage, he is very physically active. ICU psychosis is another matter, it can have lingering effects, but my husband has also dealt with that successfully as well, but it takes time. Overall we are both very thankful that ECMO treatment exists.

I also had ICU psychosis. While I recovered from the organ failure, mentally to this day and my hospitalization was almost 4 years ago. I would in a drug-induced coma for 6-8 weeks. The psychosis is a whole other issue that I had then. I still have those memories of what I was seeing and hearing. As I was coming out of things, my imagination was running wild. I'm glad I wasn't able to say what I was seeing or hearing. I live in Utah and I'm not of the Mormon faith. I was terrified that I had Mormon demons all around me and I was planning my escape from what I thought was an evil den of evil demons. When I could speak, a friend from church came to visit me and I had to ask her many times to verify where I was. I have other horrible dreamlike things I was experiencing. But, when I go to bed to this date, I still remember those times. It's only when I'm looking forward like I was in the hospital, but I don't when I lay on my side. I'm glad that I never shared these things I was seeing and hearing. When the psychologist came to evaluate me, I must have mentioned the Mormon demons lol. My doctors are all Mormons, so, my guess is that I must have called them evil Mormon demons lol. In a way, I think it may have been a good thing to talk to someone. I would be more than happy to get rid of these weekly things going on in my brain and a repeat of what I was seeing in the ICU.

I was on the ecmo in July 2019 for 2 weeks. I had heart surgery and shortly after I developed pneumonia. My lungs failed. I don't remember much just very bad nightmares. I still have them often but I'm still grateful. Emory hospital was great.

My son 42 years is awakening from a coma . So happy that his eyes are open and now still on the ECMO and just did a tracheotomy on him so he can’t speak but now he knows he is not alone. I’m glad I was able to read all these successful experiences now that gives me hope that he will sometime soon be telling his experience too.

My husband just got off ECMO today 6/18/24 , he was on it for 4 days. His chance of survival without it was slim. We will take out chances on the future outcome , vs not having one at all.

ECMO is truly a WONDERFUL piece of equipment, consisting of several pieces of equipment. The Pump, the Heater/Cooler, the Oxygenator, the CDI Monitor, the Pressure and Flow Monitors, and of course the Hand Crank, which everybody hopes they NEVER have to use! I thank you to the Pioneers, that have gotten us where we are today in Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation!

I was on ecmo dur to Covid ARDS, now back to life. had a near death experience. i was in induced coma. had terrible dreams vividly. I am not sure if after ECMO if life is same after that. I am improving very well but somewhere in my deep thoughts i am not the same, I always think that i am gonna a low quality of health related life. I was a very lively career oriented, persuading my dream life with PHD lectureship etc etc. and then this happened. now i dont feel as lively as i used to be. i just wish there is one day when i know i am absolutely fine nothing wrong with me and i am not going to have anymore pains triggered by this critical illness.

I was on ECMO in the fall of 2018. I was completely miserable for the 18 months after it. I still have mental issues to this day, but they are less than half, versus more than half of the time. Almost daily I slip into a day dreaming type state and relive the nightmares I had the entire time I was on it. I was severely depressed and basically gave up on life. It did eventually get better. If you ever want to discuss or ask questions, I’m happy to talk.
