SURVIVING SALFORD - Documentary

Ойын-сауық

Due to the redevelopment of Salford I have decided to document some of the old parts that are clinging on my the skin of its teeth before they are gone forever....nothing but a page in a chapter of Salford's Historical past..
Some of these places that are now sadly derelict or abandoned and they once meant the world to someone!...a shopkeeper...pub landlord or just a place full of history and nostalgic memories...
I also documented some of Salfords "Hidden Gems" places that most people probably do know about, but might have forgotten they existed..
If you enjoy this video I am thinking about rolling out a series of
"Surviving Salford". If you enjoy this video why not subscribe... the support is always welcomed.
Take care people and I honestly couldn't do it with you all.

A fantastic histo-vlog Ant made and edited with pride, passion and a sincere knowledge of the area. Commentary is really unique and ultimately befitting of such an important part of Manchester’s culture. Ex-Salfordians , and current ones should embrace the past and try to ensure that it’s passed on two future generations, History isn’t just about war and dynasty’s.....it’s about real life, real people and real communities. A brilliant blog....certainly one of your best Daft Monkey👍

I am Salford born and bred and love our history. As a child in late 60s/70's I lived on the block of flats (Langdale House ) that were knocked down and are now Regent Retail Park. At the junction of Oldfield Rd and Middlewood St was the old School ( Sacred Heart I think) with the foot bridge across the road for the pupils to go across to the netball courts. This is where the flats opposite the old Railway pub were built and the old pub is now a Chinese restaurant. When I drive down to the junction of Liverpool St and Oldfield Road now it feels claustrophobic with all those new blocks of flats that are being built. Great video and refreshing to hear someone from the younger generation being so proud and passionate about Salford.

I know where you mean Jude and you are right it does feel very claustrophobic. They are totally changed the whole area without any consideration for its heritage and past. Thank you so much for watching the video, I really does mean a lot. I just can’t wait to get back and out film around Salford and Manchester. Take care Jude 🙌🏼

Salford Central Fire Station on The Crescent was where my Mum and Dad were living when I was born in 1952 at Hope Hospital. My Dad joined the Fire Brigade in 1949 after returning from military service in Germany. He had served from recruitment at the age of 17 in 1943, through the Normandy landings with the "Welsh Spearhead" 53rd Recce Regiment, and fought all the way to Hamburg and Lübeck, where he served in the occupation force until 1949. Salford Museum should really do some research into the role of returning servicemen after WW'II. These are people to whose enormous and selfless dedidication to duty we owe so much.

thank you SO much for the very touching Vlog! I live in the Southern US now but grew up their (just off the crescent, near the market) in the 60's...many good memories! My friend lived in the fire station... I remember visiting and being warned to stay out of the way when they got the call. It was quite exciting! The station was full of life then. As a kid, I rode my bike down the crescent often. I dreamt that one day I'd live in a house like those beautiful Georgian ones. I had no idea they were Georgian, but I imagined that "posh" people lived there - perspective is everything! Now I live in a very southern house with a front porch... funny how life turns out! I have fond memories of nearby Peel Park. We kids rode our bikes there and stayed all day... our mothers must have been happy. We'd take a feast of jam butties, and old lemonade bottle refilled with good ole Salford water. I also remember the Gas Works! I loved walking by to see how full it was.... And on match day... (United of course), droves of fans would walk down Cross Lane singing and laughing.. that's when fans were tame I guess.

Absolutely true, every word. Salford Council over the years has completely disrespected our past. The beautiful old buildings reduced to rubble. The Cresent pub, what a disgrace. If someone buys a listed building, they should be legally bound to maintain it.

Great video Anthony but also very sad. I just wish that the powers that be would value the past as much as they do their visions of the future. You're right about voices and sounds of the past echoing from old buildings. They almost have a soul and energy of their own. Good work pal. 👍

Outstanding Vlogumentary mate. Has you know The Crescent pub was mine and your Dads watering hole for many years and it break my heart to see it left like it has been. The boarder of Manchester is creeping over our boarder of Salford and the big investors are throwing these ugly high rises up and its not right. That's my opinion of course. At times I felt pretty emotional watching this, especially the old gasworks and the nod to the famous Salford song (Dirty Old Town) and that's a credit to how well you put the video together. The presentation and editing is stunning. As we've spoke about before mate Salfords History is becoming HISTORY...

Chris Lees it’s a shame mate, your spot on and I feel the People that are making the big decisions about Salford’s fate and future don’t have a clue what it means to the area and people from Salford because there not from Salford. Salford is soaked in history, and sadly it’s being carelessly demolishing without any consideration for its past. Thanks for watching mate, I really do appreciate it 👍🏼

I went in Christ Church in July 1958 with my sister Brenda and lots of other children from John Street School before they demolished it, There was dust and dirt everywhere and when we climbed the steps up to the galleries the floor was littered with dozens of old prayerbooks, Some older lads ( not from John Street) had broken into a burial vault in the Crypt and they removed at least one body from a coffin, one lad swung it around his head on a wire and threw it into the Bolton Bury Canal, I will never forget it.

I survived Salford (1958-1986), Paul Massey and all, and I'm not making that up. He was a friend and in our football-playing circle for a while, until other 'things' took over his life. I dont' have many feelings of nostalgia for old Salford. It has only left me with one true, positive thing - when people today say they are 'poor, underprivileged, or vulnerable', I can turn round and say 'You really do have no idea about any of these things if you didn't experience Ordsall in the 60's'.

Great video. It's always sad when you see buildings or a community depressed, God knows we have plenty of them here. In the past I have worked on a lot redevelopment projects around the U.S. with some working out better than others. I am always for saving old buildings and repurposing them, but here in California it is a little different with our strict seismic requirements. Lately what seems to work over here are trendy art districts and food courts (with multiple vendors) near universities. That old Fire Station is ready made for something like that, like you mention in your video a place for someone to come and sit down and have a sandwich.

Great to hear that you worked towards saving these kinda places Paul. They are a part of out history and heritage, we need to admire our past and not destroy it. Salford & Manchester are dreadful at doing so. These places can be reused over and over again because they were built by an era that knew how to make things to last. Cheers buddy 👍🏼

What Manchester does today, Salford will do tomorrow. But wait. The pandemic and the subsequent financial collapsing may just halt the trend. And I for one hope it does. I've had many a jar in the Cres, not my favourite pub by a long way, but I still get angry when I see what some faceless t***ts are trying to do with it; I think you're on the money here. Hope it goes back to the community as I feel it should. But if people won't use it, then it has no chance. Witness the closure of pubs nationwide this last 20 years. I'm afraid we're on a slippery slope, but if we stay angry and alert, we may get somewhere. It would be good to see some of the big property investors go tits up, as a warning to the others. But TBH, I can't think of anywhere where the wholesale loss of housing and industry, and the pubs and shops they supported, is more keenly felt. And I'm not from Salford, I'm ashamed these days to say I came from the vandal run cessspool on the other side of the river. Thank God I moved away 30 odd years ago!

There were street gaslamps like that in the streets where I spent my early childhood,:Broadway near the Docks, Marple Street, Peel Street, Eller Street, and all over Salford. In those days though, they had an ornate iron bar sticking out just below the lamp. This was for the lampman to lean his ladder on to get up their and attend to the lamp. They were also much used for rigging up swings by the kids who spent most of their lives on those flag-stoned pavements and cobble-stoned roadways.

@@daftmonkey7296 You must have been looking at the lyrics as sang by the Pogues. I think the word “Croft” isn’t used much outside of Salford to mean a rough unused piece of ground. So they no doubt switched the lyric to suit their own ears.
