What’s crazy is that the earthquake that caused the tsunami was live a 7-8. 1964’'s earthquake was 9.2 and that tsunami was only 200m.

the wave was never that high, the highest the wave was was 60 meters, it was over 500 meters "high" because it rolled up another mountain.

@Anon it doesn't no. it Makes it elevated to that height. You don't include the geography of where you live when someone asks you your height, do you? It is maybe technically right, but you cant tell me you can't see how misleading this is. I've seen many posts all over picturing tsunami heights, and they just show it as a massive wave. which it wasn't. This kind of misleading information that is technically not wrong but uses technicalities for sensation purposes is the cause of many misinformation based forums these days. Just look at antivaxxers.

People don't realize that waves are often measured from the backside (relative to sea level). The face of the wave is often 2-3 times that. These guys were looking at a 100-200 foot wave. On top of that, Alaska has very little light pollution. If the moon was only a crescent, they are looking at a huge wall of nothing. A black abyss hurtling towards them.

In July In Alaska, the darkest it gets is about what it looks like 5 minutes after sunset. There would have been plenty of light to see it.

Fortunanetely the wave subsided very quickly, going from 524 to merely 15 meters by the time it hit them. Still, seeing a 500+ meter wave come at you must be insane!

Imagine being at a job interview and telling that story when the guy asks “tell me about a time when you were in a stressfull situation”

What a nightmare it would be to see a 1700 foot wave coming at you. Couldn’t even begin to imagine what was going through their heads.

I can understand him having a heart attack upon returning to the bay. It would have been incredibly emotional and triggering, and his blood pressure would have shot right up. I just hope he wasn't alone when it happened.

A family friend was on Kodiak island when a tsunami hit and came up almost to the foundation of his family’s house. He said that same earthquake had caused a tidal wave so massive, it cleared an entire village, coming in from one side, and going across back into the water on the other side wiping out everyone.

I would imagine people not believing their story, at first. Literal tall tales of riding waves taller than houses. Actually riding the wave, almost as if you are surfing it. A pretty badass story to tell, though. It's great when reality is stranger than fiction.

So I just found out that the wave wasn’t actually 500 meters tall it was actually the splash that was caused from the landslide before washing away a nearby hill but just imagine that your on top of that hill when the landslide happened and you get to witness the full height until being washed away.

That’s so cool

These people are likely the only ones who have ever and for at least a long time will ever see a wave this big. I kinda wish I was there since simulations of it and videos can’t give you a true sense of scale you have to actually be there and I want to know what it’d look like

I’m curious when I look at images on how the wave appeared it shows the landslide happening and it makes the wave that slams into a hill and then it there when the wave reaches 500 meters but what I’m questioning is that’s was the wave still moving as a 500 meter wall of water moving towards Howard’s boat before shrinking down to 50 feet?

I’ve heard various descriptions of huge tsunamis over the years. Some describe them as coming in like a giant flash flood, other descriptions depict tsunamis as giant walls of water. The word tsunami means ‘harbor wave’ in Japanese. A common misconception about tsunamis, is that there’s only one wave in a tsunami. In actuality though, tsunamis come in a series of waves called tsunami wave trains. Each individual wave can be a different size, and the first wave is seldom the biggest. Even if a seawall survives one tsunami wave, there’s usually more waves coming. It’s the subsequent waves that come after the first one that can knock down structures that survive the first wave. Those people who were in Lituya Bay that night were extremely lucky they weren’t hit multiple times.
