SURVIVING CONVERSION THERAPY: Isaac talks with Christopher Dowling-Magill

On today's episode, we have a really fascinating guest and in my opinion, a moving and deeply interesting conversation. We are talking to Christopher Dowling-Magill about conversion therapy. Obviously this issue is not something that I think is directly political. It's certainly not something that's dominating the national news right now, but how this interview came about, and I think the conversation we had is very much in the Tangle ethos.

I'd already listened to 'Dear Alanna' before watching this. I hope everyone gives the podcast a listen, it's incredibly well done: tender, introspective, thoughtful. I can't recommend it enough. Thanks for including Christopher and his perspective on Tangle.

Enlightening and enriching interview. Kudos to Christopher Dowling-Magill for redeeming years of pain and allowing his grief to take him in such a positive and encouraging direction. I had just finished reading your interview with Chloe Valdary talking about the Theory of Enchantment before I listened to your podcast with Christopher Dowling-Magill, and the application of the Theory of Enchantment to the issue of the legitimacy of same sex attraction was impossible to miss. Also, as an evangelical Christian raised in a very conservative church and family, the spot on similarity between T of E and the teachings and life of Jesus - also impossible to miss. Both Christopher and Chloe, and you & the Tangle team, are exemplary humans trying to give us tools to be better humans ourselves. I am so appreciative.

I am sorry that Christopher wasn’t able to get help from his church leaders in explaining the Catholic view on homosexuality and living a life as a chaste Catholic. Listening to him it seems that further study of his faith would help him understand his questions about marriage, multiple wives and the dignity of women in the Old Testament. I’d recommend you reach out to Fr Mike Schmitz and invite him for an interview, or at least use some of his KZread and podcast teachings on the subject of homosexuality to give a fair representation of the Catholic Church’s teaching. I haven’t listened to the podcast, so I apologize if you have done this. Regardless I’m sorry to hear of the sufferings of those who have been victims of conversion therapy.

Where does sexual orientation come from? Your primary caretakers in the years before the age of reason have nothing to do with forming it? It’s set in stone when you are born? You can be straight, gay, lesbian or bi, and that is how you are born, and it’s perfectly acceptable because you are born that way? Would if you are ‘born’ a pedophile? It doesn’t matter how many people deny it’s a sexual orientation, it’s how people who are experience it. I don’t think a single person reading this comment would not say it’s a pathology and that a pedophile doesn’t need ‘conversion’ therapy, using it figuratively to mean therapy that changes them. How many people would just want them dead? No one seems to remember that once there were vigilantes trying to catch gays, and that gays were at the heart of the conspiracy that says: “this group among all human groups is the poison corrupting society,” a place at different times and places they shared with Jews. The pedophile sits there now. No one questions the hatred of them. You know, maybe that hatred had a lot to do with storming the Capitol. Can anybody see it’s out of hand? It just might be that the speculation among researchers that the number of pedophiles in society equals those of the accepted alternatives to heterosexual orientations is accurate. Even if you hate every single one of them, we’re talking about millions of living, breathing, people that have the same needs as the LGBTQ+ crowd, and I’m not talking about the sexual needs to act out their desires but the very human needs of being validated as people that matter too, of being accepted as valuable members of society, at the very least of being spoken to and not ghosted by almost every single person that knows or discovers they are minor attracted (I mean, if you want them to be good). It just might also be true that the majority of pedophiles, or at least a very good number of them, don’t act out and molest kids, or stop doing that, and sacrifice their sexual selves for the good of society and the good of kids, but you know, they are hated and ghosted too, Tangle, Issac. Anyway, Christopher Dowling-Magill, I watched the whole video, and you are so lucid and genuine. You have a way about you that makes me feel comfortable hearing what you have to say, and that it comes across in a video makes it all the more real. I do believe I have something for you in terms of answering the question of where your gayness comes from (where human sexual orientation comes from in general), or at least I can give you some very real food for thought. But I am blacklisted on an institutional and grassroots level (just ask Issac for example), and so I appear as just some wingnut spouting their uninformed and ignorant opinion and not as the respect poet I would be if the people behind the outlets of our media were not hypocrites. Act out no; act up yes. I self-publish and promote my work in places where people are appearing as being open-minded and sensitive-hearted. www.barnesandnoble.com/w/tonight-on-television-the-pedophile-and-his-society-a-poetry-manual-donny-duke/1143883384?ean=2940167333291

Canada banned conversion therapy effective January 2022. It was passed unanimously by Parliament.

But is it alright to allow children to receive hormones and puberty blockers? I say NO. But if an adult chooses to participate in conversion therapy, thats against the law?

Stop with the bullshit. Children are not receiving hormones or puberty blockers, unless there is a serious medical reason to do so. Conversion therapy is brainwashed torture, of people who are perfectly normal in and of themselves, or perhaps you haven't been paying attention to the people who have gone through it.

People are free to have their opinions. They are not free to inflict those beliefs on others to force them to live in the way they believe they should be lived.

@@LindaM2005 Yes I agree with you but not conversion therapy It's not a forced opinion thing as would be the same for any other type of therapy. The guy in the interview said himself that he was not forced, but that he chose for himself. But I noticed you sidestepped the child issue.

I didn't sidestep anything. I answered it directly in my reply to you. Conversion therapy is based on the premise that something is wrong and needs to be "fixed", that homosexual people are broken and not "normal". Being hammered with this from the time of childhood brainwashes people into thinking something is wrong with them, when they are simply attracted to people of the same gender as themselves. That is not a free choice. That is directly denying the basic humanity of homosexual people, and a violation of their basic right to life, liberty, and security of person, as guaranteed in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. That's why it had unanimous support of Parliament.
