Survive Achilles Tendon Rupture | Post-op week 3-4 | Cast, Boots, Exercises | Ep.3
This video talks about things I learned during the 3-4 week after surgery of Achilles Tendon rupture. In the video, I talk about my experience of the 2 weeks, also exercises you can do while in a cast, how to do weight bearing in a cast (do this at your own risk, this is not a standard ATR recovery protocol), a few things about boots such as aircast vs vacoped, Evenup, boots return policy etc, as well as exercises you can do while in a boot. I ruptured my Achilles tendon while playing soccer.
Hey it's Yulong. I am making a series of videos to document things I learned from my Achilles Tendon rupture that I didn't see anywhere else mentioned. I got a lot of useful information and mental support from videos of other rupture patients so I wanna do the same, hoping my videos could help others too.
Feel free to drop comments if you have any questions and I will be happy to answer!

Thanks for posting your vids. I recently ruptured my achilles. I'm 64 but very active so I went the surgery route. After surgery. I was put in a splint for a week, then put in a cast for 6 weeks! I asked my doctor why since I've seen so many posts of people going to the boot and weight bearing much sooner. He told me that my tendon didn't break in the middle, rather it actually tore off the foot bone with a bone fracture. The bone fragment was removed and the tendon was re-attached with anchors to the foot bone. The 1 good thing out of this is he put me at neutral when he put the cast on so I won't have to work towards neutral when the cast comes off. So it really depends on where the break takes place on how the post-op will take place. I'm in my 4th week (cast). I'm using my own EMS to keep my calves from atrophy and doing leg exercises/toe raises to keep active. Thanks again for posting your journey. It's been very helpful.

sorry to hear that! I do see people having similar issues where the heel bone is involved so you are not alone. nice job on the calf EMS - something I should have done! try to do some upper body exercises if possible - they help blood flow and hence recovery too. wish you a speedy recovery
Great info, tx 🎉
Thanks for these videos. They have helped me a lot

im still walking on crunches with a moon boot (3 days) as my heel is very tender.. did you experience this too?
In the UK, ruptured mine last week and they put us straight into the boot and wedges, full weight bearing. No surgery, no cast. First week I used crutches, as of yesterday (day 7) I’m full weight bearing in the boot without really using the crutches. Only walking about 2000 steps per day but going to build up. Weirdly I’ve never felt any pain throughout the whole process so far.

thats so different from what I usually hear, but generally early weight bearing seems to be a good thing, particularly preventing calf atrophy. Wish you a speedy recovery!

I’m also in the UK, did it on 5th April and went into boot with wedges weight bearing and am now at physio stage. I feel it gave me a head start as it has helped me retain some of my calf muscle on my bad leg.

@@infernodesigns6368 that sounds about right. I did full weight bearing towards week 6, and am still struggling recovering my calf. Muscle atrophy is a big deal
Gracias amigo estoy pasando por lo mismo espero recuperarme pronto

Thank you for your video, Yulong. Does your insurance pay for your Vacoped? I am thinking about getting a second boot.

unfortunately no - I bought an used pair online myself
Any specific reason you stayed in the cast longer? I had to do the same thing with a month in the cast. The DR said my Achilles was so frayed that he wanted to be extra cautious

for me it was just the doctor's standard protocol - I honestly started weight bearing while I was still in cast though I don't recommend people doing that w/o consulting their docs
I removed my cast on the 4th day post-op. I went to the bathroom directly on the second day using walker.

Got my soft cast off after 10 days post op and started walking in a boot, around 4 weeks now and no pain or discomfort, working down to no wedges
