Survival, Victory, Peace | Aleksander Kwasniewski, Boris Johnson, Andriy Yermak

On 24 February 2024, the Victor Pinchuk Foundation and Yalta European Strategy (YES) held a discussion “Survival, Victory, Peace ” on the occasion of the YES meeting in Kyiv “Two Years - Stay in the Fight” dedicated to the second anniversary of Ukraine's resistance to the full-scale invasion of Russia. Speakers discussed Ukraine’s fight for life, freedom and rules-based order as well as how to aid Ukrainians' victory in this fight for us all.
In a panel discussion moderated by Aleksander Kwasniewski, President of Poland (1995-2005), and Chairman of the Board of YES, The Rt Hon Boris Johnson, Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Andriy Yermak, Head, Office of the President of Ukraine, discussed what Ukraine needs to win, and what changes need to be made to the world order when it does, to ensure a lasting peace for Ukraine and the rest of the world.
Andriy Yermak stated: ""We need weapons, ammunition, air defence to protect our towns, our people and our soldiers. Then we need real steps and real victory - an invitation to join NATO - from the second Washington Summit. Not giving the invitation at to Ukraine at the Washington Summit will prompt new escalation - in the Middle East and in other regions of our planet.”
Alexander Kwasniewski agreed: “We have to do it. When we speak about escalation, we show fear of escalation and it is the wrong thing to do. Please, members of the audience, go back to your governments and support the opening of doors in Washington at this time - we have no more time.”
Boris Johnson declared: “It’s for the Ukrainian people to decide what peace they want. But I believe that in order for that to be possible three things must happen:
1-Give Ukraine the weapons it needs to win
2- Make it absolutely clear that Ukraine belongs in NATO and the EU
3- Take the $300bn of frozen assets and give it to Ukraine.

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT WE THE PEOPLE OF EARTH NEED: A PRECISE, EXACT, ACCURATE, REPORT ON THE SITUATION. JUST THE FACTS. IN THE HERE AND NOW. THE #1 THING THE NATIONS MUST DO TO ACHIEVE VICTORY FOR UKRAINE: GET THE REQUIRED MATERIEL INTO THE HANDS OF UKRAINE. IT IS VERY LATE IN COMING. BUT THERE IS STILL TIME. LATER WE WILL DISCUSS THE PAST. RIGHT NOW WE NEED THE EXACT MATERIEL AS STATED.

Each nation has a 70% strategic ammunition reserve. Strategic means ESSENTIAL FOR YOUR SAFETY and YOU CAN'T GO DOWN FROM THERE. BRINGING IT TO 50% IMMEDIATELY KNOWING THAT IN 5 MONTHS IT WILL BE 70% COST NOTHING. They are not at war and NATO does not engage in artillery warfare. If it goes to war it destroys everything with planes then they enter the highway WITH tanks.

Shouldn’t the US focus on protecting its own borders? Why isn’t the European Union funding the majority of the costs of this war? They have a massive budget for other things and it’s not the American responsibility.

America promised “security guarantees “ when the Soviet Union collapsed. The security guarantees were in exchange for destroying their nuclear weapons. You might say that Ukraine didn’t have launch codes but that was only for the ICBM’s Ukraine had hundreds of no code nuclear weapons. And do you really believe Ukraine couldn’t redesign the launch circuits after 30 years? We wanted fewer nuclear weapons and got them. Ukrainians wanted security guarantees and they didn’t quite get them. We are learning a huge amount about the capabilities of russian weapons and the ability of our weapons to be effective. We are replicating our old weapons and giving them to a free democratic country in a fight for survival, a fight against Genocide. When did putin become the good guy?

@wootwootwoot32 do you think allowing dictators to grow stronger makes the US safer? Do you think Ukraine is too far from the US for the US to actually care? How long do you think it would take for an ICBM to travel from mainland Russia or China, or from a Russian or Chinese submarine, to any major US city? Thirty minutes? Fifteen? Is Ukraine still too far for you to care?

The only country to invoke article 5 of NATO was the US after 9/11 and the allies all came. No-one sent the US a bill for their services - because they stood by their word, which meant something. What the US has to decide as a nation is - when you give your word - what is it worth, how long does it last and will your allies come next time if they can't trust it?
