@@diversitylove5460 Nut trees take about as long as fruit trees, most start producing at 3 year mark, some at 5 yr or 7 yr, some at 2 yr mark. Definitely worth the planting and care. Plant some peanuts and the person before me commented to you. That's a good idea. Yucca takes 1 yr. Yams and sweet potatoes, and potatoes in general take about 3 to 6 months depending on strains/species. They have alot of calories though, so a big plus.

Hidden gardens! A lot of ornamental plants started out as vegetables or grain. Amaranth seeds can be popped, the leaves taste like beet greens. They will self-sow, but if animals find them, they're gone. Some chilis are ornamental. Cana lily roots are the 2nd best cooking starch known. The ancestors would peel and shred the roots, then dry them. We planted sweet potatoes, chilis, ground cherries, cana and so on in flower beds. Everyone commented how pretty the flowers were. :)

I planted a bunch of perennial vegetables last year. Jerusalem artichokes, Chinese artichokes, rhubarb, asparagus, sorrel, Turkish rocket, walking onion, perennial leek, meadow garlic, and nodding onion. Turkish rocket only thing I seemed to have lost, as I have no idea where I planted it and the tag was pulled out, it will be found eventually. A few red Russian kale and Swiss chard, did not die over the freezing cold winter, surviving -20 nights, they were little things hanging onto life in early spring and now nice plants giving me a harvest.

The Cherokee tans are our only pumpkin we’ve had luck with. They resisted the squash beetles and like you said, they are prolific we harvested up till our first frost and got around 300 pounds off 4 or 5 plants and we still have a couple left in the pantry. They fed us and the animals over the winter. Great addition to any garden!

Prior to Covid, several English villages began 'gardening' in public spaces such as parks, medians, easements. One that was featured showed how the older citizens knew exactly what to grow where. My favorite line from a lady was that when you finish your morning walk you could come home with a salad. Thank you for promoting this concept here in our country.

If there is a vacant lot, try finding and contacting the owner. They will likely be happy to have someone "take care" of the lot for them. About the only thing they wouldn't allow is permanent structures. For colder climates where you can't grow citrus fruits, try growing the rugosa rose. Their hips are high in vitamin C, and the bushes can double as privacy fences/deer barriers. For cold climate, higher fat crops, sunflowers are good source.

This all of a sudden came up this year about what we can't have. I've been growing on my balcony and it was never an issue. My desire is to get a piece of land to grow on and if possible live on as well.

I had been planning on getting comfrey for some time. I bought a dozen early in the spring and I have put them around some of my fruit trees like you and others have recommended. Coincidentally I also planted sweet potatoes around the fruit trees in between the comfrey. I have also planted potatoes in four different locations in my garden. I have been looking through my garden all spring to find spaces in my garden that are under utilized and figure out what I can grow in those spaces. I have grown several dozen sweet potato slips from three sweet potatoes I bought from the supermarket. I have been able to get four successions from just those three sweet potatoes to extend my harvest period. I also bought 5 citrus trees to add to the lemon tree I already had. I put some sweet alyssum and balloon flowers in the citrus pots to attract pollinators and benifecial insect interest they also act as a ground cover. I live in an HOA but have been able to build a greenhouse, three bay compost system out of old pallets and have converted the entirety of my .05 acre back yard into a "back to eden" garden trying to keep perma culture and organic concepts in mind.

In the Phoenix Arizona area you can contact the land owner of the not used piece of urban land and make an agreement with the land owner on growing gardens there, setting up plots for people to garden and the land owner gets a tax break on the land, so you may have that in other cities also.

Great info guys! I just bought the book. Believe it or not, I saw things changing for the last 20 years. I can't believe it but my home will be done in about 7 weeks. I need to check your channel for fruit tree info. I was listening to talk radio today and farmers were calling in. Get ready to see more farm foreclosures and keep in mind the prices at the grocery stores are not reflecting the gas increases and fertilizer increases. Some are selling products at contracted prices. 2023 will be very harsh even in the US I'm afraid. I agree, plant wherever you can!!!

Great video! Setting up a seedbank is the best thing one can do.when you disturb the soil you've got instant cover. Will have to go with the trombochino when we get bigger animals. Highly recommend some of the oilseed pumpkins. Holy moly, those things are PACKED with low to mid smoke point oil. One can fry a few soft bodied bugs with them.. Jerusalem artichokes are an awesome lure crop. You are providing such valuable teaching. Thank you!

If you are thinking of growing food on someone's private land they aren't using, I'd suggest contacting them and asking. Perhaps offering a part of the harvest. Too many folks these days are squatting/dumping trash/setting up homeless camps on private vacant land and getting met with the business end of a shotgun when the owner comes across them. I own vacant land and would be miffed to see someone doing anything without asking me first. Public land - cities may welcome food production on their property. Master Gardeners in my area hold classes and do just that with the blessing the local government.

I just planted those this year and WOW are they trailing! Haven’t got blooms yet! But wow are they long. Down her in SW FL, it is hot. And I’ve tried butternut squash in every season. Forget it! It’s a joke! Too humid! Start out good then get mildew. And I MIGHT get a 4” squash, if I’m lucky. So researched and got me some seminole seeds. And when I saw how long they store for I thought! Yah, now we are talking! I 🙏 I get a bunch!! 🤗
