Survey finds drastic decline in Americans supporting college education

A new Gallup survey says only 36% of Americans are confident in higher education, down more than 20 percentage points from 2015. Paul Tough, contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine and author of the upcoming book "The Inequality Machine," joined CBS News to discuss the numbers.

Now a days those girls are more able to bring the legal weed since we had dispensaries in about every neighborhood. One is even across the street from washu's bjc clinic with the white woman doctor don't want to help black dudes unless they are hirny street dudes that call the rest slurs.

I graduated college with a degree in Finance and can reflect on my decision and concluded that college in most situations are a waste of time. I would have been better off working an entry level job like a teller or admin for a financial advisor and gained the experience while saving to get the position I have today. College is only useful for certain jobs like engineering, medical, and some government professions that require a degree but for everything else in between you are better off starting entry level and maybe earn specialized certificates in your field.

The jobs in the blue collar sector are paying far more than they used to. Truck drivers are making 100K a year and skilled labor like carpenters, mechanics, heating and air etc. are making very good salaries. I think more people should go this route than get a useless social science degree and be in debt with 100k in school loans.

The loan system has people paying off interest for decades after they've paid the principle. Congress has to address this. Not everyone needs a four year degree to be successful. Two years or specialized training in the trades is needed. The unions used to have the best apprentice programs.

Spot on. The terms of many college loans are notoriously PREDATORY having the person pay mountains of interest and fees before paying off the principal. This makes these people slaves to the banks, and keeps them from buying homes, cars, or getting married and raising families years after they've graduated. And this is why many young people are opting for apprenticeships, enrolling in trade technical schools, or just entering the workforce. There is now a backlash against colleges, universities, their tuitions, and the banks that finance those tuitions.

If you're not rich, and you don't want to do any of those things, don't go to college! Those fields I mentioned skew the average earnings of every other college graduate career. A university degree is expensive and, unlike 40 years ago when I went to college, there are scant academic fellowships available (those foundations have long since run out of money and shut down) which in the past contributed greatly to the financing of one's education. Also, I attended grad school in Canada, which ONLY offers academic fellowships, not athetics-related ones. Something not mentioned either in this video or the comments below is the simple fact that college improves one's knowledge of culture, the arts, languages, social science and the hard sciences. It offers a space for students to take their time and acquire both knowledge AND learning, as well as exposuere to new and often contradictory ideas/ideals--thus encouraging critical thinking. I wish American citizens weren't so happy with and even PROUD OF their ignorance. It's embarrassing.

I graduated with a ba in geography from a california university. The first thing I knew something wasn't right was when the professors told us we needed to take prerequisite courses because employers were complaining that students graduating from college didn't know anything. This is insulting to the high school teachers, along with those who just graduated from high school. As if they didn't have any books to read to learn things about the world back then. I knew this had to be a lie because I never heard of this problem outside of a university or college. Also why is it that no one ever asks what you learned outside whatever your major is. When I graduated nobody ever asked me what I learned from anything I took in my major or my prerequisite courses. When I started working for different companies in the office field, they taught me what I needed to know within a few hours or up to a week. I did not need what I learned in a university. I did not need it for the work I was doing. So I basically wasted four years. It was about twelve hundred to sixteen hundred a semester back then to attend a university when I went. It is likely about ten thousand right now. The professors are not smarter then you. Do not put them on some higher level as if they know more then you ever will. They are just as flawed as your average human. Had I invested in technology stocks back then rather then putting it in a university, I would have been far better off then I could ever imagine today. I was lucky to just pay my loans also, rather then relying on student loans. That is another subject that is never discussed in the news media in regard to why they won't pay us back, for those that did not rely on student loans. It was just as hard for us to pay immediately then those who paid on a student loan also.

Many young people no longer see a college degree as worth the Return of Investment given the time and money spent to obtain one. A significant amount of college graduates are finding themselves underemployed or unemployed while mired in perpetual debt often with predatory terms. This has created a backlash against colleges and universities at a time when the pool of potential students is shrinking, and more young people are opting for apprenticeships, enrolling in cheaper trade technical schools, or simply entering the workforce. Look for many smaller, regional colleges and universities to close their doors permanently from lack of students.

The cost of college is going up every year to the point where even if you land a good job after you get a degree it will be YEARS before you come close to paying it off. Also the value of the degrees have gone down due to the fact the so many people have them. The reason I went to college was to be able to get a job that paid a living wage. For better or for worse simply having a degree regardless if its in a useful field allows you access to jobs that otherwise would not consider you.

Other than nurses, doctors, engineers, etc that require advanced training, college is mostly a waste of time.
