SURPRISES IN HAMBURG! MSC Virtuosa - Vlog 3, Hamburg, Germany!
Hello, and welcome to my latest vlog series! In this series, I'm onboard MSC Virtuosa for a 7-night cruise to the 'Northern Cities' over New Year. This means I'll be leaving Southampton (England) and visiting Hamburg, Rotterdam, Zeebrugge and Le Havre (Paris), so stay tuned to see what each of these ports can offer you on your travels!
In this episode, we're spending the day in Hamburg, Germany. We'll be leaving the port area, walking to the city centre, and seeing what the city has to offer if you're visiting for the day. After this, it'll be back to the ship to sample Hola, the onboard Mexican restaurant - I can't wait to show you this one!
If you're new to my channel, hello! I'm Fraser, and I'm hoping to use this channel to show you why I love the world of 'cruise' so much. So, for now, hit that subscribe button and let's go - I've got SO MUCH to show you!

Hamburg has so much to offer. We were amazed at what we managed to see and discover there. Can't wait to return this year for our next cruise in September ❤️

Totally agree - Hamburg is a fantastic city - I’d go back in a heartbeat!
Well done on walking into the city . We have just done Hamburg and did the tunnel and up the top of the philharmonic building . It’s free because it came in so over budget that the city decided it would be Fred for everyone.
That's the first time I've seen anyone walk into the city from the port rather than take the shuttle bus or an excursion. It's great to see that there is a pavement along that road and that it really is possible. I'd identified a couple of frequent city bus services to the closest S bahn, but now I know you don't even have to do those. And of course on a weekday there is the water bus,

Hey Stuart, thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment! You’re right - lots of people obviously don’t know there’s a path the whole way in. It’s a long walk, yes, but absolutely nowhere near impossible if you’ve got a decent level of fitness. Saves a good €20 per person on the shuttles!

We walked there the other day. It's about 45 mins from ship to Minuatur Wunderland via the Elbtunnel. Decent walk
Great way to find your way about Hamburg! $ saving and enriching experiences tops - yes- wife and I will jump off ship and explore - when sailing with Ma’ - ship excursions all way for convenience- interesting ty 4 sharing - Germany on the bucket list -👍

Hey Shawn, thanks a lot for watching - totally agree it depends who you’re with - I LOVE finding the cheapest way to see a city when exploring solo!
Loved seeing the boats. The Windjammer was called _RICKMER RICKMERS_ who was he l wonder? WIKI ... It's a 3 masted BARQUE woof woof! It brought saltpeter from Chilean mines around 1896. Brought other merchandise too from the East. RICKMERS was a shipbuilder. He built this windjammer. STOP Its got a long and fascinating history ... example was taken by the Portugese in WW1, then lent to the UK, then given back to the Portugese and lent again to the UK for war operations. LONG story short it was bought back by the Germans. Finally, its resting place is now _Bei Den St Pauli_ near the museum ship _Cap San Diego_ in Hamburg waters and now living its life as a museum too. "Its a _hulk_ meaning it floats but incapable of sailing the oceans now." For entertainment purposes only!
I used the tunnel last time we were in Hamburg and loved it. We're there again in the near future and may try to get lunch at Block Brau brew house near the end of the tunnel.
Hi Fraser We have just found your channel as we have not long booked to go on the MSC Euribia at the end of October doing this itinerary. We have only ever been on a Disney Ship before so watching this has helped us see what MSC and this itinerary are going to be like. Also nice to hear a fellow Scottish voice!! Can't wait to catch up on the rest of this series

Ah, jealous of the new ship - she’s looking stunning in the shipyard currently! MSC will be SO different to Disney - looking forward to seeing how you find it in comparison. I’ve not tried Disney yet (SO expensive for solo’s!), so I can’t even advise! Agreed re the Scottish element - we’ve got to stick together - glad you found the channel! :)

Enjoyed this, thanks Fraser! Wow, the tunnel and building are amazing! I'm all for saving money and I've explored some places on my own, but I would've been a whimp if I didn't have a good grasp of the language. 🤣 Noticed HALT a couple times. 😳🤣

Hey! Yeah, I’m a little more nervous when I don’t know the language, but hey - gotta go for it, ha. I didn’t even notice ‘halt’ - maybe I should’ve stopped… Haha!
What a great tunnel that was in Hamburg, good to know that it is there. Like your video's too ofcourse :)

Great Video! I just booked this itinerary as solo on the MSC Euribia in November - I think she is going to be very similar to Virtuosa so I'm loving this series. I'm definitely going to walk the tunnel !

Hey Kathy, yeah - very similar ships, so hopefully you’ll find this series useful. Thanks so much for watching!
Weirdly just watched an old episode on Travel Man yesterday and that tunnel was featured. Apparently it was built so the Dock workers could have foot access to the docks.

Great video Frazer 🙋♀️ I enjoyed the walk in to Hamburg and loved the tunnel too! Didn’t get to the “jaggy building” but enjoyed the hop on/off bus (€18) which after the brilliant New Year was all I could manage 😵💫

Ah, I didn’t realise you also did the tunnel - that must’ve escaped dinner conversation because I went for Mexican this night! Yeah, in hindsight I’m really impressed I managed to walk the city after my 1pm rise, haha!
Another great vlog Fraser. We will certainly walk into Hamburg in March now, after seeing this. The hot dod did make me chuckle lol..was the sausage itself reasonably tasty? Glad you had a fabulous New Years on the ship. We have only dozen Christmas and new year together once, and absolutely loved it. Done a fair few Christmases on a cruise, but only the one new year. Time to do another next year I think now. Im with you on Hola, the food is amazing, and one I will definitely be back to in March..take care, and look forward to your next...Terry

Very tasty, but wholly unexpected, ha! I can’t wait to shop for my new year option for next year!
Hi! Just ran across your channel while searching for cruises out of Hamburg this summer. We live in Florida and cruise a lot BUT there is nothing like that stroke of Midnight feeling on New Years. We’ve done it many times and we love it!

I’d say it probably took about half an hour from ship to tunnel - not bad at all!
I here there’s a few different terminals at Hamburg, what was the actual terminal you stopped in? I’m hoping our msc one docks there as I’ll walk too after seeing this so thanks
@FraserAtSea

Hey! I’m actually not sure which terminal we were at - just the main one the MSC use. It seemed like a pretty key terminal though, so would be surprised if it’s not the main one!
I’d love to walk through that bridge into Hamburg but think it’s too far for me so I’ll have to get the bus or a taxi. I’ve so far just got Miniature World booked independently.

Guid yin Fraser. Being lost in Hamburg for 5 minutes had its advantages! Hola is great for trying out Mexican dishes you haven't tried before, and for a payable cruise ship restaurant, cheap!

@Fraser at Sea we loved it but on one occasion but we were hurried out the door by a member of staff who seemed to want to get rid of us. Guess we were occupying a table he wanted soon thereafter! Entirely our fault for not saying! Hamburg looks great as walkable. So far, our North European cruises have been more Holland, Belgium and France, so need to give Hamburg a shot soon. Thank you for your 'walkable tour', like you we are quite jaded as to organised trips. Please no more 5k runs as per the Teneriffe cruise, no up tae that!
How long does it take to walk from cruise terminal to Hamburg city center?

I'm ALL for FREE museums - we have some in London, BUT think they should pay at least £€1 since the upkeep is so high. Even if they don't need it they could give the money to Charity or for Hospital machines. At least, leave a charity box for donations? I'd feel better. Only me? Sorry. Not a bad shout to be fair - most people probably would pay a small fee. I guess keeping them free makes them accessible to all though, which I really like!
