Surprise C64 Donation & Repair

Ғылым және технология

Dean aka / game_whisperer donated a special Commodore 64 to me without even looking inside (something he usually would do--cf. his Twitter). The honor was upon me to explore the surprises inside and also do some repair work.
CORRECTION: the device I‘m referring to as an ARMSID is actually a SwinSID nano. No idea why I confused the two. Sorry about that!

I usually dislike machines that have been "personalised" (I never did it as a kid) but for some reason this C64 evokes real nostalgia for the period. Mean Machine & C+VG were my two favourite mags back in the day (long live Jaz Rignall & Richard Leadbetter et al) & it's nice this C64 has found a good home in Jan Beta's house!

Man that's some moddin' done there. I'm not even sure how you could use any of it at all. Also I was not even aware you could do that to chips, I thought legs were useless after they snapped so thank you for that little bit of information I have some to fix now. Oh and THUNDERCATS HHHOOO.

That's quite a harmless case of a lost leg. Also, if the leg has snapped off completely you can still free some metal so solder to by carefully filing down the plastic/epoxy that makes up the packaging ... lot's of material left til you get to the actual chip: cdn-blog.adafruit.com/uploads/2016/06/27664808502_24a5163659_b.jpg

Regarding the $80 $A0 switches... are they related to hacking the cartridge address so it can be mounted and not started? The startup sequence checks at some address, if a cartridge is present, it'll read a specific value "CBM80" and jump to the cartridge start address. By permuting two address lines, the cartridge can be mounted at a different address, and the computer cannot detect it and boots into Basic. So the cartridge contents can be duplicated to tape... It was a well known hack on VIC20. A special RAM extension card was required to reload the tape into it, make it read-only, switch back address lines then a button would reset and allow boot to r/o loaded RAM.

  • @firstsurname9893

    @firstsurname9893

    5 жыл бұрын

The simplest explanation is that the switches disconnect the GAME and EXROM lines preventing the cartridge from starting. That fits with the labelling as the rom locations are $8000 and $A000. See this page for more markus.brenner.de/cartridge/

I love watching a successful repair on an old 64. I kept mine in a bin for 6 months before I got brave enough to attempt the repair. Turned out it was RAM, PLA and VIC II chip. I would fix one thing and then wait for parts before fixing another. I built my own PS also and put it all in a PC PS box. Now I feel brave enought to collect a few more bad ones and attempt more repairs. You gave me anincentiveto push forward!

A great video as always Jan. I wish I was as tech savvy as you are, as i'd love to be able to open up and maintain my old C64's as you do in your videos. I still have my very first C64 that my parents bought me second hand back in roughly 1987/88 ish, that came with lots of games, and books and cassettes etc, I think the previous owner was a programmer, as there were lots of programming books/reference guides with it etc, AND... it is the collectible silver label C64 to boot. It has sadly long since stopped working, but it could very well be something and nothing to get it going again, maybe just one or more of the chips like in your machine here possibly. If I knew what to do I would get it going again myself, just for nostalgias sake with it being the very first C64 I owned. These days I currently use a C64 G as my main gaming computer, and have also just purchased another C64 G from ebay which should arrive next week, it is in better condition than the one I have now and is less yellowed than mine, but the guy has refurbished it, and replaced the capacitors etc, and he said it is in great nick, so i'm looking forward to receiving it soon :-D I also purchased Neutron recently, and what a great game..I love the C64 scene right now, it's better than ever :o Keep up the great work Jan, all the best ;)

I wish that I could've kept my C64, but it was tossed out decades ago when it became obsolete. My favorite game was Raid Over Moscow. I played it for hours and would love to be able to play it again. Do you know a way that I can get that game and play it on a semi modern console? If so, PLEASE let me know. Thanks again for this great video. 😃👍

The Commodore 64's are great gaming machines still today and I have two of them at home. I got one new and the other one I got from a guy who was being sent somewhere else and had to sell his C-64 system and software. That was how I got a floppy drive for the computers, along with software and other items. I used the system for awhile then put them away. Hi Jan! The SID chip was not an analog synth. it used a digital sound synthesis with 24 bit registers that where basically counters counting up and for different frequencies the counter value per sample was different. also the ADSR envelop was digital. this was some insight of an interview with bob yannes. however, for every of these three voices it was possible to route the signal directly out through the volume register handling out to the output or going through the filter stage. and the filter stage was analog. it also uses two capacitors that are connected externally from pin 1 to 4 if i remember right. big capacitors can not be implemented inside the chip therefore they are placed on the motherboard. and this is also a weakness of the system because these capacitors have a certain tolerance and that tolerance affects the corner frequencies of the filters. this is one of the reasons why the SID chip sound different on different C64 computers. So rebuilding the sound generator in software is easy to make 100% accurate but the distortion of the 8-bit DAC and the analog filters and other non-linearities in the volume regulation and that involved transistor stages is the primarily "character" of the SID. especially the theory behind the filters is not always very trivial when implementing them digitally and measuring the characteristic of the original filters. this is probably the shortcoming of actual emulations. but that hopefully will change soon because i started the FatSID project. you can find it on facebook and i will post some videos soon where i go through the development of the FatSID. if I have a prototype version where I think it is time to evaluate and test it I can send you one. i will also post the videos also on KZread on a separate channel soon. All the best and greetings from Austria, Stefan.

The SID chip replacement you used is actually a SwinSID Nano. It is based on an ATmega88p 8 bit microcontroller and considering this it isn't bad but does not emulate POTX/Y. ARMSID however is based on an STM32 microcontroller, which is a 32 bit ARM chip with FPU. It actually does a very good job and has POTX/Y support.

I have a very strange question - would you say the keys are a dark brown or black that has faded and yellowed? If they are meant to be black, would peroxide treatment restore it to an unambiguous shade?

  • @JanBeta

They are definitely dark brown originally. I can’t recommend retrobrighting dark parts, they often turn out with cloudy discoloration. You can watch my Atari 800XL restoration if you need an example. ;)

The compilation tape I remember well - I had the Atari 8-bit version and it was utter garbage and even back then, as a child, I was immensely disappointed, and the tape only loaded about half the time because it was a long tape and cheap quality :-)

I had the cascade tape for the spectrum, a game called skull, so I started adding stuff in basic to it. Two skulls chasing you, instead of one, more beeps in the sound, that got me into programming that cassette did.

If I remember (it's been years) it stops the game running and then you can add pokes to cheat (extra lives, health etc) then restart the game with the cheats in place, you could also back up the memory (and thus the game at that point)

@@blackcountryme It all depends on what the programmer decides it should do; the things you mention is just one of several options, another might be the ability to restore the system after a crash without resetting the entire computer. Or it could be used to invoke a machine-code monitor, as i have done for my Sinclair ZX Spectrum +3. This helps me find out all sorts of things that happens "behind the curtains" in the normal workings of the BASIC interpreter without issuing a Basic command to start the monitor.

12:02 Mains ground? I'm sure you know this already but just to be sure, you're using a proper ESD bonding point plug aren't you? I'm not 100% sure on the science of these, but AFAIK there's a resistor in there that means you don't get fried should you get a high-current shock while wearing one.

  • @JanBeta
