Did you know you can play 3D parts of GBA games in the emulator mGBA and render the mode7 effects in an HD internal resolution as opposed to the GBA's natural sub-240p? It'd be cool to see a video on that, these games are actually hiding a lot of hidden detail and they look really weird and interesting when you make their low-res 3D effects suddenly HD, like F-Zero Maximum Velocity with HD visuals. It's a very new feature so I don't blame anybody for having not heard of it. It also works on rotation effects in GBA games, so it can get that Giant Skeleton from Aria of Sorrow looking smoother than he ever has been before

Great episode! Perhaps not inherently powerful/dorky 3D, but there's a TON of random licensed games on GBC that were developed by the same part of natsume that did shadow of the ninja/ninja warriors/the snes power rangers games, including an Action Man title and two power rangers games that are well worth checking out!
@baalfgames5318

Toy Story Racimg by Tiertex was actually pretty impressive for 3D on GBC, especially when you consider that it's one of Tiertex's better games. (Not saying much)

"Celebration of the weird, ambitious and unnecessary" is my mood like 90% of the time and I am delighted to see a new Punching Weight!
Holy shit though, those sprites from the Spider Man bonus sequences are insanely good. The web looks so dynamic as it comes near the screen and Spider Man animates just so absurdly smoothly. They had to cut down on some of his animation frames for the open world part of the next game which is understandable, but holy shit that bonus stage is insane for the spritework on Spidey.
@Gadget-Walkmen

What "next game" are you refering to? Spiderman 2 gba? There was animation frames that were cut downed? I didn't notice at all but Spiderman 1 gba does seem more smoother than ever.
@Gadget-Walkmen
2 жыл бұрын
Oh never mind, the frames in spiderman 2 gba ARE cut down and looks REALLY choppy compared to the first game, never mind, The video showed that and it doesn't look as good as the first game but still kinda decent on it's own overall. Wish the frames were high enough to be completely smooth for spidey swinging AND the environment of the buildings.
Uncle Derrick is back it’s a Festivus miracle!
Speaking as someone who was obsessed with Action Man as kid I will gladly give you the backstory to that game. Robot Attak was direct to dvd movie to promote the third version of the Action Man toys. I got my copy of the film with the Action Man magazine.
3D on the GBA takes me back! It was always fun growing up and seeing it try to swing with the big dogs

I got to say that with the Spiderman 3D, I love that they pushed what they could. Like sure the city scape is chonky. But that's some beautiful sprite work on spiderman himself, and especially those half screen filling thwips as you release on the end of your web swings. That's a gorgeous effect.

Heh. If you haven't found it at this point, he released a video showcasing the custom "franken-controller" which is basically 2 N64 controllers fused together like Siamese twins. It's purpose is to allow you to play games that support dual controllers (like goldeneye and perfect dark) without holding 2 controllers. So now you know, the N64 had Dualshock before Sony did. 😜
This was great! I’d love to see a Boundary Break episode from Shesez on games like this to see how these janky 3D sections are built
Hi Derek! Thank you for always being so excited about all this random stuff you find in Punching Weight. You are a joy to watch.
I always enjoy watching quirky experiments like this take place, and I doubly enjoy it when someone gives it the spotlight it deserves. Also your approach to bad games just brings a big smile to me, you still find entertainment even in the "bad" stuff and it's so much fun. One GBA 3D game you haven't covered yet is Drome Racers. It's one of the rare cases where I think the handheld downconversion is actually better than the original console version -- the console version is a bland, forgettable kart racer (which I think nobody would have even remembered had it not held the Lego license), but the GBA version goes full-on Virtua Racing esque 3D and it's VERY impressive. Please give it a look when you have a chance!

To my understanding a lot of the people who ended up doing some of these shovelware licensed titles are actually incredibly talented programmers. So when you see 3D sections or something like that, it is a bit of their talent coming through. Flexing their programming muscles just for the hell of it.
You put into words exactly what I felt back in 2004 when I first played Spider-Man 2 in the GBA emulator when the 3D level came up.
THESE GBA Videos are one of my MAIN INSPIRATIONS for making Game boy videos myself! Love them!

I have to say that seeing that U-Draw in the background as well as the double N64 controller is making me feel happy for the future... have a good Christmas SSFF Crew!
Absolutely loving this episode. Nothing like appreciating extra effort in our early portable systems. Speaking of effort, the GBA version of Max Payne has full voice acting and might be one of the best isometric representations of a console game on the portable system aside from Tony Hawk. Most of the levels have the same layout with many of the same puzzles intact.
I am not gonna lie, Tron FPS looks very nice.
Merry Christmas, Uncle Derek and Producer Grace!

A Rustie and Danny Brown reference in SSFF? This video has EVERYTHING!
You gotta check out the 3D in Jimmy Neutron vs Jimmy Negatron. Also, Lego Bionicle has some 3D lava surfing.
I had Attack of the Clones as a kid. And, trust me, that 3D looked much better on the actual GBA screen than it does on the video.
I remember getting Tron 2.0 for Christmas when it came out, and to this day, it's still one of my favorite GBA games that I'm so happy to own. Heck, it was worth the price back then just for the novelty of the Tron and Discs of Tron arcade games included on the cartridge, but to also have its own surprisingly decent story mode, so many surprisingly good minigames and a full FPS mode, just...damn this game is cool. :) I think this game is also responsible for the right shoulder button on my DS Lite breaking down from me playing it so much. lol
That GBA Crash sequence is really good. Like if you ran that footage through a CRT and told me that was a level from the PS1 version I'd probably believe it.
I had tron killer app on my gba as a kid and this game had been lost to time for me. I can't believe you just hit a nostalgia nerve bro oh my I had completely forgotten about it. It's been so long.
Oh cool a new ssff video. Time to watch it hundreds of times for reasons that are not yet clear to me

One of the most impressive feats of programming happened in 1982 with the release of 1K ZX Chess for the ZX81 home computer. As its name suggests it's a full chess program running on just 1KB of RAM, which includes an AI opponent. In actuality it was even less at around 700 bytes. That's 700 bytes for rudimentary graphics, rule set and all the AI routines to play the game.
Hot wheels stunt track challenge is the first and only 3D gba game I played and is just oddly impressive

In regards to the Crash Bandicoot games on GBA, what makes the 3D sections even more impressive is that there isn't even an art style change when transitioning into those sections. They look artistically similar to the 2D sections of the levels. I do feel as though the first one did this better than N.Tranced, as in that game the entire level is chase perspective and you're just on top of the water or in space, but those ice levels in the first game handle this fantastically.
I was playing the spiderman on the gba two days ago and I was so shocked at the 3d graphics
