Hey, thanks for the great rundown! Couple of comments I'd like to add: 1. Character section for the time being only works with Classic oscillator (and it's global, so all Classic oscillators in both scenes will take on that setting). We want to make this setting per oscillator and for all oscillator types in one of future versions of Surge. 2. The Square/Sawtooth presets for Classic oscillator were always there, even before Surge was open-sourced. It's basically a shortcut so that people can start straight up with a square or a saw without the need to figure out that you need to move the Shape slider to get one or the other. 3. The Map to Controller or Key, Add Automation Lane etc options are so-called VST3 host-side added menu options. Not all DAWs have these or support this VST3 capability, and different DAWs will have different options here (compare Bitwig vs FL vs Reaper for example). AU plugin doesn't have this option at all. 4. Right-click anywhere is how Surge rolls! A bunch of parameters have additional options there. For example, in Sine or FM oscillators, you can right-click Feedback to get an extended range which greatly increases the tonal palette you can achieve. 5. Noise color parameter is more like highpass in the upper half, lowpass in the lower half. :) 6. Inter-oscillator FM will work with all oscillator types that are not BLIT-based (a type of band-limiting technique) - so this includes Window, Sine, FM2, FM3. Classic, Wavetable and S&H Noise are out. You can even use audio in as a FM modulator, but won't work as FM carrier. 7. Analog envelope type basically emulates a charging or discharging capacitor, which is how actual analog envelopes were made. Has a different curve than any of those you get in Digital mode, which are just regular linear/quadratic/cubic, mathematically perfect. 8. MSEG currently has a limit of 128 nodes, so can't exactly have ANY number of points that you want :)

@@GalantGoStudio We have added a "String" oscillator to Surge 1.9, which gets you plucked and bowed string sounds. And of course, there are plenty of plugins that do this. Anything that has a comb filter or two with some waveshaping, filtering and oscillators/exciters will do. Plenty of such synths... It will not sound EXACTLY like MOSS. But it's the same idea.

Hey thanks! There are a couple of reasons! The main one is if you have a bunch of chords with long release times on a few tracks, you may want to have them cut eachother off at a certain point so your CPU doesn't die with thousands of overlapping unison voices. Some people like to restrict voice count to sort of emulate the behavior of certain hardware :)

Maybe not if you’re extremely familiar with synthesis

@@GarronsMusic well... if not explaning the basic stuff such as what's timbre, frequency and more natural qualities of the sound, as well, the types of waves, and why they sound like they do, etc; you don't need an hour.

I watched for the full hour and found the pacing perfect and appreciated the comprehensiveness. I paused a few times too to try things out. When I first opened Surge I didn't have a clue how everything fit together. And voila! just after a single hour I have a pretty clear understanding of Surge and can now start using it in a meaningful way. Like Garron said in the video he'd have to spend a few hours more if he went through all of the effects too!

@@MysticOblong If you know other synths, then 1. you wasted 50 minutes of your life; 2. you're not familiarized with synths. If point one; you would already look for a shortest tutorial. If point two; your statement doesn't add any value to the argument due its naivity. I use synthetizers and modules since year 1997, before Facebook; KZread; Instagram; etc. and I can firmly state that no one needs an hour to explain basic stuff and how to wire it up. I would love to do tutorials; I have a done a couple about electronic music just to show how a 25 minutes tutorial can be reduced to 3 minutes without losing any quality and pedagogy. That's called workflow optimization and efficiency; simple as that.

@@Overxpossed 1. I like Irish accents so this was a nice hour break from the local Aussie accents. 2. I don't like speaking in list items so this is the last one. Not everything we watch has to be less that 30 mins in length. Besides, this is SURGE THE MOVIE and the title would not make a lot of sense if the video only went for 10 minutes. This lightening fast Surge overview is probably more to your liking: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z6CIu62wkdKrZrw.html I found that one provided a really good quick overview. I just really appreciate people take the time to make videos and share their knowledge. I think I remember something about "workflow optimization and efficiency" when I did that course when working in a supermarket. It was just before we did the first aid session.
