Thank you very much for the time you put into this video. Very comprehensive and you get to the point. Excellent. I have an iPod classic and was looking to replace it with a non-Apple device. I agree there are some opportunities with the Surfans device (to include the charging cord), but they seem minor compared to the benefits. I've read good reviews, but your video certainly helped make the decision to order it. And just in time, too! Amazon discounted the device and I used the savings to order the 256 gb Samsung microcard. Thank you again!

@@TUXXREVIEWS I have mine and I love it, too! Ok, I noticed that when the device screen goes to sleep, the buttons (play, volume, etc.) do not work. So, if music is playing, you have to press the power button to wake the device in order to activate the buttons. The navigation wheel is cool, but I find myself using the forward/back buttons to navigate. It's a little cumbersome to play music in shuffle mode, but I just need to practice more. The buttons don't light up in the dark, but once you have that muscle memory, it won't be an issue (at least not for me). I love that I can adjust the auto-shut off and auto-sleep mode on this device. The back of the device scratched VERY easily, but I suspect it's a plastic film, but I don't have the guts to test that theory. LOL. And it takes 14 seconds to power on (yes, I'm a nerd). Loading music is very manual and will take some time, but it's not that bad and it is a fairly simple process. All said, these are minor issues for me. I do not regret getting this device. It's very affordable. The fact that I can expand the space to 256gb is amazing. And the sound quality is fantastic! Thank you again for your review!

I have an iPod with the mechanical wheel. Even an old Sansa. They both nailed the perfect user interface. Surfans has no clue, this UI is so clunky. But it is still way better than a touch screen and I no longer need to carry my phone around. It is wonderful for my Classical Music Collection. As of Oct 2022, mine shipped with USB 2 but does not work with the 60 Watt 19V chargers. It needs a 5 Volt slow charger. I Hope more budget mechanical UI players come to market for competition.

Mine came today. I still have my old Sony players, but I wanted to play around with something different. Need to load some music and then wait for the weekend to get on the mower and listen. I have Hours of mowing here in ME. Cool vid, thanks man!

I would suggest doing what I did and start a new MP3 collection as FLAC only, no lower quality audio files. I'm redownloading everything , replacing even 320 mp3s. Also a higher priced set of corded headhphones add to the experience. For me thats the Alienware Aw988 amzn.to/2U9a28a Its $231 on Amazon atm

@@patrickstevenson9527 I tend to get audio files from friends but have ripped flac with Sony Vegas pro with add on packs. While Sony Vegas pro is mainly used for video production it has amazing audio ripping capabilities too.

I've come here off the back of a failed purchase. I bought a HIBY R3ii on the strength of reviews, had it in my hands, charged it up and started to explore its features. I didn't get far because after returning to it, basically it 'black screened' on me. Totally unrecoverable, despite many different re-start/hard reset techniques, more or less straight out of the box, brand f'ing new!! I'm returning it to Amazon and ...what can I say, this bunch make DAPs that are much more expensive ...but, who the F are they? THIS looks like good news ....sold!! Thumbs up.

You know HIBY is one brand I havent reviewed much. I've had requests and at some point will but havent. The Surfans F20 is a great little $100ish player. I may do another video on this great little player ... FAR better then the (rare) follow up the Surfans F35 (happy you didnt get that one).

I have a bit of a thing for items that have cult status, eg Zippo lighters, Swiss Army knives and Vostok watches, I see it as testimony and re-assurance that they are good in many ways :-) Looking forward to receiving it (tomorrow).

Almost went for this! I went with Colorfly C4 Instead. My mate own's this one and reckoned the Colorfly is leap's and bounds ahead sound wise.

I've had this player for about a year. Only two real complaints: The sound signature (regardless of lossless format/bitrate), while quite detailed, can be a bit shrill at times: this pairs well with "darker" earphones, earbuds, & speakers. If using sensitive earphones/earbuds, a brief static is heard before the beginning of play as well as between tracks. This is regardless of "gapless" status. I have not noticed this with the line out, so I'm assuming this has something to do with the processing-to-opamp circuitry.

What headphones are you using? I've tested on several including the highest end ($300ish) Asus and Alienware full size headphones and it sounds amazing. I don't hear the shrill but that could be due to audio file or headphones combination

Can you use the jog wheel as fast forward/seek?

I'm looking for something I can play my own DSD files on in my car. Can I import my own DSD files on here and play them? I'm a song writer and lots of times I mix to DSD, but I also like to record to DSD from vinyl. I did look at the manual and it looks like it would, but just want to make sure there are no weird glitches with being able to play files I create my self. Well, actually I just ordered one. I'll try it out and see if it works out for me. Great video! Thank you!

I bought one little over a year ago and I love it to death. I still buy cds and rip them in flac format and wired playback sounds amazing. One issue that I have is that with a couple of bluetooth speakers and headphones, I had a problem with the volume.

I got tons of music on my android phone stored on my SD card but the shuffle music option is a joke often playing the same song over again out of a 1000 songs But I remember having a ipod classic and on shuttle it would randomly start from the 1st song selected and count its way up to 1000 NEVER replaying the same song in the library. I wanna get 1 off Amazon but the reviews look shaky interns of reliability😕

@@MrChangeordie Since it has to be connected to headphones or speakers, I can't say. I never made a volume comparison, and never max out the volume. It's pretty damn loud.

I just opened a F20 I bought off amazon this week, and it has USB-C now. I am not sure if there are any other changes as well, but it seems to be heavier then the older model you have by a few grams more at 110g, and I found the older model was 106g.

It's the same as the HIFI WALKER H2 in a slightly different case and buttons and a different DSP chip set it uses the same firmware. It's wheel is slightly better because its textured while the HIFI WALKER H2 is rubberized feeling. The HIFI WALKER H2 has a place to insert one of those lanyard string strap things while the Surfans F20 does not.

How would you say the sound compares to keeping audio files on an iPhone or other higher-end smartphone? I'm trying to leave all smartphone usage behind me and wondering how much I'll have to spend on an MP3 in order to match or surpass my current deal of listening to a mix between Spotify and downloaded music on Voice Record Pro.

Hello ! Can we adjust the depth of the bass ? I listen to G-Funk / Gangsta / Dirty South where bass-line is very important. I got a Sony Walkman NWZ-B187 and loved it for its "Bass boost" option ! Now it's broken (after 10 years of use) and I am looking for a great MP3 player with whom I will greatly enjoy all my G-funk albums with solid bass-lines and synths. Also, I don't really understand the menu of the equalizer... it says 31, 63, ... ,1K, 2K, etc... what does that mean ?

There is preset EQ settings and its adjustable by you as well. Also keep in mind the headphones or in ear monitors will make or break the bass.

And it also looks like this can be "RockBoxed" which makes it linux friendly. More research pending but very interesting.

Does this have any internal storage? I read that it supports 128gb micro SD and 128 USB OTG. So does that mean you can plug in a usb flash drive using OTG? Also can you copy files from a flash drive (using OTG) to the micro sdxc without a PC (using the device alone) I've never purchased a lossless audio/Hi Def music player, would you still recommend this device or is there anything else in the same price range that is worth my time? I like Flac but its a real debate of file size vs perceived quality.

I am specifically interested in this devices line-out capabilities. I am looking for a device that is pure line-out output just like a Pioneer CDJ or similar would be. In other words, when outputting via the line-out port, will the Surfans volume functionality be bypassed/disabled completely so that the destination device (like a Mixer or Mixing Console) can take over gain control of the Surfans volume?

Great video. Thank you. So close to buying this. Every MP3 player seems to have one thing that bugs me. The screen it for this one. Have you tried to see if you can NOT have so much info scroll with the song title? The file type, bit, size etc is pointless. I've had an iPod classic for years but I'm tired of it. Is this device easy to transfer music and have it formated the way I wan't? Artist, then album by year. Thank you much.

The picture in this thumbnail may not due it justice. I noticed as I loaded more music (and cd art / covers) some look much better. This doesn't change the small yellow font any but the album art looks hd. See my tuxx reviews Instagram for example

@Donald - The unit offers two playback "modes," if you will. It does aggregate your music based on the embedded metadata of your digital files and allows you to search and play based on the major stuff like artist, album, and genre. It also has the "explorer" ability and lets you just navigate through whatever raw folder hierarchy you have everything saved on the SD as. As for the ease of loading the player... it's just drag/drop copy/paste as an external drive when connected. Couldn't be easier.

When you plug a DAP (Surfans F20, Sony NW-A306 etc) into a computer it sees it as a protable hard drive, thats what it really is. Then you transfer music files. As far as spotify your talking playlist as in online playlist right? I would suggest buying the Sony NW-A306 as it has real internet access - As in access to the google play store where you can download spotify. Then just log in and your online account should be all there (in the cloud) waiting for you.

I have a 256gb SD card in mine, but when I sync my music to it, it maxes out at 15,000 songs. I mostly just put my songs on shuffle,, so I have maxed out at 15,000 songs for a while now. I'm trying to figure out a way to sync more than 15,000 songs, since a 256gb SD card can probably sustain up 40-50,000 songs, but I don't think that is possible to go over 15,000 songs.

Okay, sounds great, but can you queue tracks or does it only have the shuffle option?

Its not a streaming service where you select songs for a virtural cue. You can make playlists or better yet tag songs by genre

@@TUXXREVIEWS I see. I have purchased this but also got the Mechen M30 to try them side to side. I actually preferred the Mechen because firstly, the build quality is better. it's heavier and seems to be made out of metal whereas the surfans felt a bit plastic (although still good quality plastic). Also with the Mechen, you can still play/pause/control volume etc when the screen is off. With the surfans you have to press the power button first. Also the Mechen was a lot cheaper at around £87 compared to £125 Perhaps check out the Mechen as well if it's available for you.

From the iPod? There was a program years ago but it sucked because when it converted the music to mp3 the quality might get messed up a little and you had to go back and rename all of the tracks because they would have scrambled titles and artist. Which pissed me off when I was trying to rip back off the iPod.. But this was 15 or so years ago

Either is OK but honestly for high definition audio a wired headset will carry mode data. Headsets over $300 will likely be best as a rule of thumb

Hey man. Can you please tell me, does this have the ability to skip forward and back by a set amount of seconds? Such as 10, 20 and 30 seconds? I'm desperately trying to find a standalone MP3 player which you can go forward and back by 10 seconds rather than holding a button or using the scroll bar. You can skip forward by a set amount of seconds on the iPhone using the Apple Podcasts app, but I can't find an MP3 player which has this function. Are you aware of any MP3 players which has this feature?

A quick FF tap will go to the next song and a hold on FF will cause it to ff quickly until released but not a set time. I will be on the lookout for a player with the feature. I believe some of the $1000+ ultra HD players do this. I do know that sirus xm app has a "go back" 1 hour button separate from rewind. I'm not sure how I would use that "set time" FF as typically I use FF to skip songs and Rewind to replay song but not like 5 seconds back. You want this for audio books or?

I don't want to carry around a smartphone to be able to use the feature but I haven't found a stand-alone pocket music player which will do it. It really varies on the size of files, quality and length. Is the song a 2 minute some from blur or a 22 minute song from rush? I use 256 gig Samsung cards in my players and even with oversized flac files I have yet to max out 256 gigs.

I dont believe that to be true but there may be something under "settings". SO like if your running it doesnt pause as you bounce etc.

It does not support MP4. Not a real deal-breaker, but I have ripped all my old music (over the years) in MP4, so the tracks I put on the F20 will need to be converted, or re-ripped as lossless. One thing I did not see in your video is how you get files FROM your computer TO the F20... the software. Guess I'll find out soon... player arriving in the next few days.

MP4 was apples way to try to lock people into using their ecosystem. This may help: Using iTunes. 1 Open iTunes. 2 Drag the MP4 music files you want to convert to MP3 into iTunes. 3 Open iTunes preferences, select the "General" settings tab, and click the "Import Settings" button. 4 Select the "MP3 Encoder" from the "Import Settings" menu. 5; Click "OK" to apply this change. 6 Click "OK" to exit iTunes preferences.

Having trouble getting album artwork to show up. I save a JPG image in the folder but nothing shows up.

It should be pretty autoimatic, I would suggest trying a paid MP3 off amazon and see if it can see that image. There may be a setting to turn off art but I havent seen that yet.

It says Support up to 256GB but I think it can go higher. I may make a video on this in the near future. In the meantime I would say no (as it says up to 256) but I believe it can go higher.

Songs are added with the supplied usb cable, similar to how you could add non apple streamed music to a ipod. As far a quality I would take this over a ipod. While Ipod has made some strives to include quality (example: adding the ability to play larger (better quality) Flac audio files I would still compare the ipod to similar entry level products from sony etc. Thats not to say its bad, ipod is not trash but the overall tone is better in this and other high definition audio players imo.

@@TUXXREVIEWS No Problem, the other reviews I've seen [which was the only one I could find] didn't know how to use the bloody thing, they just gave up on it and called it a video. Nothing from the hint I gave ether. Keep in mind that the none touch screen buttons has function too. also some buttons on the screen may blend in [I only say this do to the fact that the button shown on the site was not so visible from the angles shown off in the review video]. I can't wait, thanks again.

Still don't understand why they ALWAYS have the headphone sockets underneath and not on top!

I wouldn't download music off you tube, I don't believe the quality would be good. Some people tell me Prates bay proxy is good but I don't know much about that.

Digital sound will never sound better than analog. Hands down.... The only good thing about digital sound is when you're on the Go. This device seems cool and all,but a great Android phone does the same especially if you have bandcamp. Which allows you to either stream from their app...(of music that's actually purchased and has a collection category) plus gives you options of digital download files which one can add to their SD card. The best media player was by Sony mini disc player that device was amazing.

Ive never atempted this but if you download to a smart phone and plug in the F20 Ishould see it as a hard drive and you may be able to transfer files that way, Do you know anyone with a computer? Perhaps have access to school or public libary computers? What counrty are you in?

Apple really wanted to lock people into their early MP4 format. Later they switched... So I know later songs from itunes will work but if its early apple itunes songs in MP4 they may not. Apple didnt want to play nice with non apple products.

Yes there is shuffle mode. That's mainly what I use my Surfans mp3 player for. Max out the tunes and shuffle thru

You would need to download on a PC (or ma) using a you tube downloader (free on goggle) and then transfer the mp3 to player. You Tube audio rips are not really HD IMO but still very enjoyable.

I will make a 2022 HD Pick video soon. This is still a solid choice I would say unless your want to spend double the price you cant go wrong.

Rockbox is supposed to be able to work on the player not sure how.

@@TUXXREVIEWS It was an operating system flash that you were able to go from Apple or like the Sandisk interface to a more customizable operating system. It had it's pros and cons but you were able to play the Doom PC game and change the visuals of the device operating system. I liked it but it would eat up the battery and sometime over heat the MP3 player as this was in beta stages and not refined well.

when you go to the album in the menu system it should play through all the files in that folder. Is that what you mean?

I bought one direct from Surfan and am disappointed. There are a number of issues from the get-go and then developed. From the box. 1. Making the playlists is very difficult. There is a program for the PC, but if you have a Mac, the best way is to simply make new "Albums" with the desired songs and arrange them by number or alphabet. 2. The "Category" is suppose to catalogue all the albums and songs for you. This worked a couple of times, but no longer. I can play the music through the Explorer. 3. The Bluetooth only works for some devices. And none of my bluetooth players. 4. I still do not know of to move within the equalizer to make a custom sound. Developed problems. 1. There is a line-out for player to your stereo system. This no longer works for me. 2. There is annoying clicking sound at the start of a new song. 3. Surfan does not respond to questions on Warranty or repair. Basically - buyer beware.

Hello I want to address a few of your comments. Ok starting with the clicking sound you may have a defective unit as mine makes no clicking sound. Your bad line out makes me believe even more your unit is defective. I would suggest if purchased via my link go to amazon and see return exchange options. Amazon is very good about returns. Next I will make a video later on song origination. You need to make sure the tags on your songs are correct. there is lots of options to correct tags (many free options). if playslists are hard on mac perhaps try to tage the song with a custom Genre

Ill be honest, I dont use Airpods.... Theres so many other (many better) options. BUT as long as airpods connect via bluetooth they should. Have you ever gotten airpods to connect to non apple products? If yes then Yes!

I know you can connect via blutooth in the car (I do it all the time) but for headphones I use wired ones for best sound quality. I will test this and follow up but in the mean time I would 1. Test headphones on any other device to make sure there charged, working etc. 2. On F20 go under settings and make sure you have blutooth on and pair headphones. I have noticed a issue where I have to repair to the car sometimes if I leave car, its not automatic like my phone.

my experice has been awesome for a budget under $150 dap. I never lost any music on mine. What player do you own
