Autumn and early winter for sure is the best time. There’s some weather apps out there that can tell you the wave height and direction. I used to use lakeswell but that’s gone now I think. I shot this on Lake Erie at elco beach.

It's Elco Beach on Lake Erie! Some call it Pleasant Beach (it's at the end of Pleasant Beach Rd in Port Colbourne)
