Surf Beach

Фильм және анимация

From the Film Australia Collection. Made by the Commonwealth Film Unit 1965. Directed by Bern Gandy. From beach inspectors watching for danger to the ice cream vendors helping people cool down, Australia’s major beaches in summer have the hustle and bustle of a small town. Surf Beach looks at the proud tradition of surf lifesavers, who give up their weekends voluntarily to patrol our beaches, keeping ordinary folks safe from disaster. Witness the thrilling rescue of a young woman who has got herself into trouble, and the military precision of the surf lifesavers as they bring her back into shore. The highlight of the season is the Surf Life Saving Championships - a marvel of pageantry as surf lifesaving clubs from across Sydney march proudly along the beach, led by the UNSW Regiment brass band. Beautifully shot and set to a swinging soundtrack, Surf Beach pays tribute to an Australian icon: the beach.

I played this to my 81 yr old father, he was a North Cronulla Clubbie and l grew up a Cronulla surfie. He teared up after watching it. We all wish we could go back to the 60's and 70's. Life was so simple compared to today. 5c ice creams, salty eyelids and sunburn, zinc cream all over the towel, hot vinyl seats in the car meant you had to sit on a towel or wrap it around you. All windows and the rear window of the wagon down for climate control, trying to be comfortable with boardies full of sand, melted surf wax on everything, and a diet of Chiko Rolls and Coke. Ah the memories. The sands of time are a cruel master.

I dont know what some of you are going on about. The beaches are exactly the same today. Some are actually cleaner than back in the old days. You can do exactly the same thing now. Beaches are timeless, go out and enjoy.

Multiculturalism. Or at least how it has been implemented. Rather than inculcate new arrivals with the cultural norms here, the message seems to be one of bring all aspects of a flawed culture that’s caused the need to migrate. Everyone should learn English and signage should be in English. Bring the food and the pleasant customs, but check that which isn’t compatible on arrival.
