Summary(Important Points) Surah Yusuf Part 43: The Devil Made Him Forget وَقَالَ لِلَّذِى ظَنَّ أَنَّهُۥ نَاجٍ مِّنْهُمَا ٱذْكُرْنِى عِندَ رَبِّكَ فَأَنسَىٰهُ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ ذِكْرَ رَبِّهِۦ فَلَبِثَ فِى ٱلسِّجْنِ بِضْعَ سِنِينَ "And he said to the one whom he knew would go free, "Mention me before your master." But Satan made him forget the mention [to] his master, and Joseph remained in prison several years." Surah 12: Ayat 42. 1. The words "ZIKRA RABBIHI" literally mean "mention of his master" not "mention to his master". 2. There are two interpretations, A. "mention of his master" and B. "mention to his master" 3. The first(A.) creates a huge question mark as this means that Yusuf(AS) forgot to mention his(AS)'s master which makes him(AS) look bad. The fine line between the innocence of Prophet and the Prophet's humanity(making mistakes) is drawn. This is the clear interpretation. 4. The second interpretation, though easier in the mind, comes after a lot of "grammar gymnastics". 5. To understand this Ayah, we need to realize that Prophets have to keep to a greater standard(of righteousness). So (the first interpretation) when Yusuf(AS) forgot to mention Allah, Allah made him(AS) stay in the jail for many years. There is a Hadith going along these lines but it is not very strong. 6. The purpose of interpretation is to learn something for our lives. 7. If we accept the first interpretation, we learn that when we are the only source of Islam in an not-so-good environment, we should hold on to a greater standard. 8. The criticism of this interpretation is that it makes Allah look bad, looking like He is vindictive which is not what the Qur'an tells us about Allah. 9. And not only Allah, it makes Yusuf(AS) took bad too and that too does not accord with what the Qur'an says about him(AS). He(AS) has been described in a way that says that he(AS) keeps remembering Allah. 10. Also, the way of the Qur'an is that when it mentions that a Prophet made a mistake, it immediately mentions that Prophet seeking forgiveness. Here, nothing so is mentioned. 11. Now the approving points of the second interpretation(the cup bearer forgot) is that firstly, it was true that is the cup bearer did forget. It is coherent also. 12. Secondly, the "FA" in "FANSAAHU" means "some time has gone by". So there is a timeline problem. 13. Thirdly, asking for help in the seen world(the DUNYA) is permissible, that is how we work. What is not allowed is asking for help in the unseen word, that you can only do to Allah. 14. But the problem with this interpretation is that " 'INDA" and "YUSUF" is not mentioned which ought to be mentioned for this interpretation. So that is why some 'grammatical gymnastics' need to be done. 15. The third interpretation is a kind of a hybrid(combined version) of the first two. 16. This interpretation states that the cup bearer forgot Allah. Subhan Allah! 17. This means that Yusuf(AS) didn't forget Allah, the cup bearer forgot the mention of Allah which Yusuf(AS) talked to him about. Look the bulk of the conversation was about Allah and only the last, small part was when Yusuf(AS) said that "mention me before your master". If someone forgot the bulk of conversation what are the chances that they would remember the small part of it? Practically NIL. 18. Also, there is a duality in this Ayah. The cup bearer forgot Allah for himself, and since he forgot Allah, he forgot to mention Yusuf(AS) to the elite people which is for Yusuf(AS) not for himself. 19. This teaches us that if someone disregards the remembrance of Allah, then disregarding people becomes easy. 20. One thing to note is that you could have the best lecturer, best opportunity, best environment still Shaitan can make you forget if it doesn't have an impact on your heart. If there was an impact, then Shaitan can't make you forget. This ends the summary. Apologies for the font size of the Ayah, if you see it in the mobile phone then it is big enough to read. Anyone who thinks I have missed some point is welcome to reply but please give the time in the lecture when Ustad Nouman Ali Khan talked about it so that I can be sure. JazakaAllah Khair

Under point no 5, you could have added the example of our beloved prophet (pbuh), of Abasa watawalla.. of the Prophet and the blind man.. And how Ustadh concludes that things which are perfectly fine for the rest of us, Allah swt expects greater dedication and tests from his beloved prophets in similar situations Yusuf (as) was the only one in Egypt who could deliver them about Allah as the rest were disbelievers. Jazakallah .. and Allah knows best

@@aimanali1085 I thought the point "things which are perfectly fine for the rest of us, Allah swt expects greater dedication and tests from his beloved prophets in similar situations" was understood when I typed "Prophets have to keep to a greater standard(of righteousness)." As for the example, I think it would take too long as I just have to write the important points. But Jazaka Allah Khair for sharing your suggestion. I will try keeping it in mind. And Allah knows best

As far as I remember 53:30 Ustadh your lecture was the first before I started listening to Islamic lectures and made me cry _still makes me cry_ . Even though I'm born in Muslim family I was kindof astray (like just praying once a week and in Ramadan). Your words shook me Alhamdulillah. And I started introspection of my actions and words etc etc and thereafter the light I've experienced is extraordinary. I wish everyone could experience what I did. SubhaNaAllah I pray that Allah SWT give you among highest ranks in jannah. Ameen

When you breakout into rage and destructive jealousy you forget yourself. My perspective is that the devil made the cupbearer forget by saying “hey if you mention this person this or this will happen, it’s hopeless or too dangerous to do” and so the cupbearer forgot all the good he felt while being with Yusif(AS) and felt despair “it’s naive and stupid for me to try to do that, I will be replaced, I need to secure myself first then I’ll help my prison friend”.

Alhamdulillah!; I really appreciate all efforts made on the understanding of this Ayah. The reason the common interpretation of this verse did not sit well with me is now solved. Thats why I could never accept the version that Yousuf (as) made a mistake and received a punishment. There was something off about it which I could never really grasp. The argument that there is no „tawbah“ mentioned and the fact that it attacks silently how we perceive Allah and his Messenger is the key to me. Those are powerful indecators that Yousuf (as) did not forget to place his trust in Allah. Moreover, It may even be the opposite meaning it may be that Yousuf (as) placed his trust so well in Allah while asking the cup bearer that Allah made that same guy come and meet him ones again regardless how long the wait. Interestingly the entire story of waiting and having patience while being muhsin is what both main characters of this Surah do. And no matter how long they have to in the end they receive the fruits of their faith and trust in Allah. Now this scene seems to have a similar touch to me. I am satified with the Opinion C because : ㅁ that one fits on how we perceive Allah and his Messenger; ㅁ how Yousuf (as) himself perceives Allah (Waliyy); ㅁ his preach matching his actions ㅁ the missing of a tawbah kind of turning point makes sense ㅁ that Yousuf (as) never broke his sincerity when deciding for imprisionment against fitnah.

Salam couple of points in my opinion. We are not going to revere the Prophets more than Allah. If Allah wants to make a point to teach us something,, so be it. People are commenting that why should Yusuf be imprisoned longer for making a mistake? Why should he be imprisoned at all?? He led a tumultuous life and none of it was his fault. Why are these few extra years in prison so difficult to accept? It is only with our limited idea of good and bad that we make these judgements. Yusuf AS said prison is better than being seduced by a bevy of beautiful, powerful, rich women! Why not look to the extra years in prison as a blessing? How was lockdown for the plague for you? Chance to catch up on Koran and Islamic lectures? Would you say you are spirituly stronger now than before the plague? Allah Alim How does it attack how we view Allah? In my opinion we should view the prophets as special human beings, but human beings non the less. I can't learn anything from an angel, because they don't have free will. If you can ask someone something, why wouldn't you just ask Allah?

Yusuf AS was only going to get out when he had to interpret the Kings dream. Musa AS was only going to find Khiderr once he walked a distance and then backtracked. Mumins and people in general suffer collateral damage, in fulfilment of Allah's will. If my tap bursts, it may just be a means to punish or bless the plumber that I call to do the job. Once my tap is fixed, I don't think about it again. The plumber might take that money and donate it, or it might be the catalyst for a 3 day bender that has far reaching impacts - prison, hospital, divorce etc Allah Alim

Salam Alaikum. Thank you for all your efforts. You said in the earlier chapters that you will explain the meaning of the name Yusuf, if you could add that in one of your lectures it would be great. Jazak Allah khayr.

It also makes sense with the parallels that ustadh made with Musa (A.S)’s story. In his story with (khidr a.s) the devil made his companion forget about the fish and the ayah there says the same (when he recalls and tells Musa a.s that the devil made him forget). and here Yousuf (a.s) mentions the prisoners as his companions too. I can be totally wrong WallahuAlam.
