Supernatural Power for Life and Ministry -- Sam Storms -- Understanding Spiritual Gifts, Session 1

Many Christians are confused about spiritual gifts. Some people aren’t sure what to do with bizarre texts, while other downplay spiritual gifts altogether.
The fact is that spiritual gifts are mentioned, described, regulated, or portrayed 155 times in the New Testament. Plus, there are at least 65 verses that describe signs, miracles, or wonders in operation. Spiritual gifts are not at the periphery of the New Testament, and that means we need to understand them.
0:00 - Confusion over spiritual gifts

Your explanations in this teaching were very helpful. For a long time I've prayed for the power of the Holy Spirit so I can inspire and encourage others, and I think I just didnt realize I already have this power. When I act in simple ways to reach out in love and do as the Lord leads me, it is in fact the power of the Holy Spirit that comforts or works in that indivivual, or gives success to a project. It's an honor to be allowed to take part in the Sprit's work.

Thank you so much for making this Biblical explanation of the gifts clear. It is greatly appreciated.

This is so good! Thank you for putting this teaching on KZread and for incorporating so much Scripture in the teaching! As one who used to be uninformed on the gifts of the Holy Spirit, they were not in operation in my life. My ignorance and hence my lack of belief in them kept me from loving others through them as well as hindering my own benefit from the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

This is a very interesting topic to me as of late. I came out of hype charismatic churches that were teaching many wrong doctrines about the power of the Holy Spirit. So I’ve been very cautious and mainly listening to a lot of crssationists but this has been refreshing.

God has made me more aware of my lack of knowledge about the Holy Spirit and how to walk in the Spirit. I am discovering how little is taught on that paramount topic in the Baptist background I grew up in. I am very puzzled and sad to hear so much about being "biblical" while big chunks of the Bible are put aside and replaced by "theology" that I do not find in the Bible when I read it (ex: cessation of the gifts of the Spirit, the Church replacing the people of Israel...) I'm sad to see genuine Christians keeping the Holy Spirit at arm's length for some reason. As the end times are getting ever closer, we cannot afford to live without the power of the Holy Spirit!

Regarding that list of 150 places in Scripture where we find the mention of spiritual gifts- is there a place where I can find that list ?

I have a question for you De Storm: I heard you saying that the power, a force and all that referring to the Holy Spirit, do you think Thant the Holy Spirit is a force or a real person?

I know I’m not San Storms, but I’ve read and listened to more than enough of his work to tell you that he absolutely believes the Spirit is a Person within the Triune God.

From Malachi to the appearance of Gabriel in Matthew, it was said to be more than 400 years of silence from God. How would you reconcile this to your view that "Christianity has always been supernatural"?

Both the Renovative and Retributive Immediate Intrusion of God must be attested for as Sign Gifts by the Continutionist, Acts 5: 1-12; 12:21-24. The Holy Spirit’s many signs together with the word must increase among the unconverted according to Scriptures. The other criteria by which the Continuationist must evaluate his/her position is by satisfactorily responding to why there was no one, not one who publicly ministered in healing during the Covid Pandemic with breakthrough reports. What shall we say about speaking in other languages with interpretation in the modern church? Wayne Grudem is a Systematic Theologian and Continuationist and his position on prophesy is that the modern church experiences only second tier prophecies largely inaccurate like how Agabus may have prophesied about Paul’s incarcerations details.

Not inaccurate prophecies, just prophecies that are subject to interpretation and therefore not infallible like Scripture. And assuming that someone with a spiritual gift (like healing) has the power and authority to use it at will is totally misunderstanding the power of God and the work of the Spirit.

The Corinthians were full of it all right but it certainly wasn't the Spirit. Only a counterfeit version of the Holy Spirit could have produced the debauchery that typified Corinth. Why doesn't Sam mentioned this? Because it would destroy his pentecostal veiws of the gifts of the Spirit and engender questions he can't answer. In making Corinth its poster child for the gifts of the Spirit pentecostalism has brought forth another Spirit and another Christ.

If that were true, why would Paul tell the Corinthian church to not forbid speaking in tongues? Wouldn’t he shut it down completely?

@@amyclutter7259 If anyone in Acts had tried to "forbid" speaking in tongues they would have been turned into sawdust. All four of those tongues instances were vital in the formation of the N.T. Church. At Corinth they only thought they had tongues (same as today amongst those who speak in tongues, which btw is nothing more than gibberish) Paul makes a true injunction concerning the true gift of tongues when he says not to forbid it, yet Corinth NEVER had this gift. But they thought they did yet it was nothing more than what you see in today's pentecostal churches.Paul's true and right injunction would be misappropriated . He knew it would be, thus rendering him as what appeared to be a proponent of this "gift". From there he will extinguish the practice and expose the false apostle who was responsible for the mess.
