We should all be as carefree and joyful as the man on the telephone in this scene. Superman has just seemingly been murdered, the city's residents are being quite literally blown away all around him, and he's still hanging on, living his best life. I love that.

Yeah a lot of people hate this scene because of the comical cut scenes. I agree it detracts from the magnitude of the situation, but it resonates as true. People only care about themselves and their lives and are often times oblivious to what’s going on. Catches the idiocy that is human pretty good. “My hair!” “ Your hair?! What about mine?!” 😂
“They Killed Superman... Let’s go get them...” They really didn’t think that through, did they? 🤔🤔🤔

Well, there were about 20 people and one of them had a stick, so maybe they could have taken those 3 supervillains. If Mxyzptlk were there, he would have given every living thing in the city the same superpowers just to see what happens. Even those 2 little dogs would be unstoppable!

This reminds me of Spider-Man where Green Goblin makes him choose who to save on the bridge: Mary-Jane or a cable car full of children. When Spider-Man chooses to save both, and the Green Goblin goes to kill him, the bystanders on the bridge throw stuff at him. One guy shouts "You mess with Spidey, you mess with New York!" while another guy shouts "You mess with ONE of us, you mess with ALL of us!"

Even though the first film had its silly moments (that admittedly weren't always funny), Superman II uses them a little too much. The scene could've been both intense and exciting, but it's bogged down by pointless gags that deflate most of the tension. Thank you Richard Lester.
@hunterolaughlin

Having silly moments in the first film and editing them out in his cut just makes Richard Donner a hypocrite. I understand why he took them out, but I still am like, “You’re no better either, Donner! You had a few campy moments you shot in the first film, mainly the stuff with Lex Luther.” The ones in the extended cut are even stupider like Luther playing piano and owning some sort of creature that he tries to feed his girlfriend to for saving Superman so he could stop the missile heading to Hackensack, New Jersey because her mother lived there. As much as the extended edition has cool scenes that were unfairly cut of the final film like the extended destruction of Krypton and Superman going through Lex Luthor’s security system, it also has stupid scenes that makes me glad they were cut out of the final film.
The dude on skates was my favorite part of this scene. Always found that hilarious.

It's just a funny scene. I don't see why people objected to it. Let them get blown away by these villains..
Have to hand it to Zod's gang. They couldve just killed everyone and instead just blew them down the street, I have a feeling if they were more like Homelander, they would have just lasered everyone down with heat vision.

A plot hole was created when Superman slipped away from the fight. How did he know that the Black Villains would track him down at his Fortress of Solitude? I wish there could have been a scene or even just a throwaway line that resolves this. Superman shows up at the Daily Planet, kisses Lex and says, “I knew it was you” or “you forgot to flush the toilet at my fortress” or something like that.

The people banding together to avenge the "death" of their beloved hero and protector---they probably all knew they had absolutely no chance against three super-powered villains, but that wasn't the point. I think in hindsight the tone of the movie was kept too light. They never conveyed how nightmarish such a scenario would be for regular people. So this scene of regular folks standing up to Zod doesn’t have any weight and is played for laughs. Man of Steel did a better job of showing how destructive a rogue Kryptonian could be.
@ericolson2286

Watch the Donner cut off the entire Metropolitan fight sequence . All of the goofball slapstick nonsense was added by Richard Lester. The Donner cut is not only better (and darker) overall, but there’s some better action as well. There’s a great scene in the Donner cut where Zod boots Superman into the Statue of Liberty’s torch. Unfortunately that didn’t make the theatrical cut. Lester was so aggravating because he literally thought he had to inject silliness and humor into damned near EVERYTHING. And that really hurt the weight of this sequence, compared to the Donner version.
So, he IS a coward after all.
