Supercross Classics 1988 - Dallas

Спорт

Before Carmichael and McGrath, there were the supercross legends of the past: Bob Hannah, Johnny O'Mara, Mike Bell, David Bailey, Ricky Johnson, Jeff Ward, Ron Lechien, Jeff Stanton and more. Now is your chance to catch a rare glimpse of how, over twenty years ago, these hisotric riders battled on the racetracks of yesterday to pioneer the sport of supercross and turn it into one of the most popular motor sports in the world today.

This was the first Supercross I ever went to. I still have the grainy, blurry pics I took that night. The day before this, all of Team Kawasaki was at Sammy White's in Irving for an autograph session. I remember sitting on a Ninja, looking out the window, pretending like I was riding it, when someone sat down on the bike next to me. I looked over, and there sat The Flying Freckle himself, Jeff Ward. He asked me what I was doing and talked about his love for riding. He told me that whatever I did in life, not to give up, no matter how bad it may seem. After seeing his performance the next night, I thought he may have been speaking about his feelings for how his season had been going at that time. He never quit that night, and while he didn't win, he really showed a lot of determination and fight. I'll always remember that experience, and I still have the hat he autographed for me. Jeff Ward is a total class act, and a great ambassador for the sport. I have nothing but respect for him.

This night i locked my keys in the car. I dont remember how me and my friend got home or if family brought the spare keys. The cool thing about it was we were at cowboy statium late into the night. The whole stadium was vacant but all the lights on. Not a soul in sight not a car in the parling lot. Me and my friend Jason walked the track for an hour and threw dirt clods at each other. Many of the jumps were so steep and hard that we had the crawl up and slide down. Track was like lumps of dirt compacted into concrete. At one point standing on finishline jump and screamed at the top of my ability and nothing but silence. So much fun walking the track sharing stories and replaying the major races in our heads as we walked those sections. Best time ever!

Ward and Johnson, fantastic. Get this….. I used to frequently see Jeff at Indian Dunes on the Mini Cycle track. He had one loud XR75. I would try and follow his lines, from my Suzuki TS 75, converted to a TM replica. Great times! Many of them !
