Supercharging your daily driver? - Should you do it?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Are you trying to decide if supercharging your daily driver is worth it? I go over a few reason why I think that it's ok

so the best way to treat a home-style super-charged car is NOT to race it and be light on the throttle ;) otherwise parts will fail. AND your fuel economy goes down, AND the longevity of the car goes down too ... i think it's probably best to save your money and buy a performance car that is already supercharged from the factory. then you know all the components have been engineered for this particular super-charged engine, so the longevity should be OK!

Funny you say that im not necissarly sure thats true. I drove a ka turbo 240sx for about 3 years daily no issues mostly. then i baught a 2012 wrx sti. My thought was about the same power AWD and turboed from the factory. Left it bone stock all three years i owned it. In the last year i owned the sti much newer and turbo from the factory, i blew up a turbo, then after getting the car back from subaru 4 months later ringland failure cyl 4. they had my car for a month replaced the piston and ring (despite me telling them to replace the block im not stupid) drove it around again bone stock for 4 months blew the motor again. NOw you tell me was turboing my KA 240sx that bad of an idea? Now in a perfect world i would agree with you just buy the car turbo or super charged however companies are going cheaper and cheaper on factory parts and not lasting nearly as long. so turbo super charge from the factory your still rolling the dice.

That's not fully true, in this case he is actually talking about a Camaro SS wich it's the same as ZL1 but without the supercharger, the bigger difference is that he has a LT1 and usually the ZL1 has a LT4, but if you buy a Camaro SS with a LT4 engine and you supercharge it, it will be the same as a ZL1

I stumbled on this video after installing a blower on my caddy v6. But this was solid advice. Perfect setup for daily drivers. Your tune and foot will decide the longevity. But it certainly has the potential to last the life of the vehicle and not chew up parts. Change your fluids at severe service intervals and you'll be good to go. Like you said, anybody that's on the fence, learn about what all your are modifying and why, then do it!

The other thing is that you have to ask yourself how often will I use the new found power I now have in my car.If are going to just do pulls on the street and take it to car shows then its a waste of money. Now if you take it to your local drag strip on test and tune nite two to three times a month it might be worth it.I get it as far as the cool factor on having a super charger. It also depends on where you are in life, house kids, job, etc.

To be clear a positive displacement supercharger is constant pressure in relative terms. A centrifugal does not engage until a certain amount of RPM is reached, Turbo chargers and pro chargers work that way. Unless I am getting something wrong in my understanding.

Great video! I'm considering supercharging my 2018 Mustang GT, PP1, Magnaride, and active exhaust. I've been looking at the Whipple stage 1 kit, which is CARB caertified and 50 state legal with the stock exhaust and Whipple tune. It's my daily driver and the Whipple stage 1 kit works with all vehicle modes and retains the knock detection safeties. Since I'm not going to drag race it at the track or on the street, I'm just going to do some spirited pulls when the mood strikes me, I intend to keep the stock PP1 tires, but I'll leave traction control on. Also, I'll be on winter tires in winter, so snow and wet mode will be important. Does the Whipple play nice with your traction control system? Have you had the occasion to dtive it in snow/wet mode with the Whipple? How does it do? Is it controllable? My main concern is breaking the tires loose at speed.

  • @RegularGuyGarage

Brian Kolley thanks! I haven’t had it in the snow, and it handles ok in the rain. My car has Goodyear supercar 3 tires, 305s in the rear and it spins the tires easily in first gear. The traction control system still works perfectly fine with the Whipple tune. The Gen 3 coyote is an animal with the Whipple. I hope you get it!!

I need to build the transmission and lower engine before switching to smaller pulley. I hope this helps. Anything over 800 change OPG. If you spent at least 7k-10k at a professional shop that put your supercharger on then you didn’t cut corners, you did it safe.

Not only those but several cars that come out from the manufacturer. It works well like a regular car. I always thought if you have the right set up you'll be A.O.K.. but people don't want to put the proper $$$ Shmoney in the block or transmission.

50 horsepower is nothing. I gained 200 with a Ripp supercharger on my AWD Dodge Charger Pentastar V-6 and it's still a reliable daily driver. If you beat on any car it'll break, if you drive sane, there's no problem at all. Except the Charger with that kind of horsepower add is very high spirited. And along with that spirit being high, so did my fuel economy go up, way up. It went from a 20 average mpg car to a 27 average mpg car. On the Interstate at 75, it gets in the low 40's. Economy car territory. Obviously, the engine really likes it new supercharger. It's not being forced to do anything, it wants to.

With my Mustang, I personally don't race. Unless you race, there really isn't much of a reason for a supercharger. I found as a daily driver, I never get into situations where the supercharger is that big of a difference, and worth the cost. For daily driving, and spirited weekend runs, the supercharger is basically pointless. Now, if you race, then it is definitely something worth having.

I"m looking at a MAZDA CX-50 naturally aspirated... and there is a supercharger MADE for that engine... and I want that-- I think it's worth it. I just want the boost when needed-- as you know how traffic is-- sometimes if you go into heavier traffic- the d...n fools will run over you if you're a bit slow!! I will NOT be racing it AT ALL.. I just don't like turbo lag and the way turbos wear out the engine faster with heat and buring up the oil etc.. on short drives..

Compared to most cars on the road, 455 horsepower and a little over 4 second 0-60 is fast on the road, friend. But there aren't many affordable sports cars anymore, except for mountains of Mustangs. They turned the Mustang pony car into a car driven by high school girls, and I guess that's admirable that Ford sold so many, but it certainly isn't impressive to me that anyone owns a Mustang.
