SUPERBOOTH 2024: Modular Audio Tools - MAT 16X8 Audio Interface

Ғылым және технология

At Superbooth 2024, Sonic State caught up with Martin from Modular Audio Tools to take a closer look at his latest creation - MAT 16X8 a 16 channel analog audio interface designed for portable use. This innovative interface boasts 16 in and out channels, 8 channels in stereo mini jacks, and is bus powered for ultimate convenience. Martin explained that he was inspired to create this compact interface after struggling to find a small-sized audio interface with multiple channels on the market.
The interface offers high-quality audio and MIDI capabilities, with the outputs being DC coupled for potential CV control. Martin hinted at future plans to expand the interface to support up to 32 channels and potentially offer a Eurorack-compatible version. While the interface is still in the prototype stage, Martin is optimistic about pricing, aiming to offer it below 500 Euros and possibly even as low as 400 Euros with enough demand. With its class-compliant 2.0 technology, this interface promises plug-and-play compatibility with various platforms and DAWs, making it a versatile option for musicians on the go.

Hi, this is Martin from Modular Audio Tools. I am really overwhelmed by all the positive feedback. I am very pleased that many of you have also missed such a device and I will do everything I can to get it on the market soon. However, there are still many details to be clarified and some organizational and legal hurdles to be overcome. I am very happy to take your feedback on board, some of it has already been taken into account in the current design and can be added as an extension or firmware update at a later date. For now I am starting with the version presented and plan to start crowdfunding soon, if all goes well there will surely be extensions and other versions. Currently I will try to communicate a few things more clearly on the website to answer some questions more clearly. But now I need a few days to recover. Thank you very much for your great interest, Martin

It is an audio interface. The main purpose is to use it for line-level audio signals. A side effect is that the outputs are already DC-coupled and can already be used to control Eurorack CVs in the -2.5v to 2.5v range. But that's just a small addition. There will probably be an additional board clamped in between that provides eurorack levels on 16 additional in and out ports with -10v to +10v. Please check the website for more information.

This is great. I barely touch any of the controls on my mixer and have been working out how to rearrange my room to hide it somewhere and free up some more desk space. One suggestion, although not a deal-breaker, would be to have a physical mute button on each channel although I realize this might not be practical or cost-effective in this form-factor.

He was so quick to say it worked in Linux. I feel like a bunch of Bitwig Linux nerds must have asked him that question a lot LOL. It's funny how interfaces get huge as soon as they have more than four inputs. I like the old-school MOTU UltraLite Hybrid because it's compact and bus-powered, but that's 8 mono channels + S/PDIF and it's half-rack size. So this is a lot more portable with more channels, and class-compliant is nice. But once something is this compact I can't help thinking it'd be nice to have a built-in battery that lasts as long as a TR-6S...

This has a lot of potential to be a future staple for modular/synth users, but MAT will have to play their cards incredibly carefully if they hope to achieve any real success and not just add onto the "WE CAN DEFINITELY COMPETE WITH THE ES9 GUYS WE SWEAR" pile. Open-sourcing the project, or at the very least providing comprehensive documentation for community-made expanders is a must if they hope for the device to sell more than a handful units.

I mean it's not like 3.5mm stereo to 1/4" cables are overly expensive, and the portability is a large part of his intent for the product. This is a pretty big gamechanger for touring artists who tape out their live hardware setups to ensure they are in compliance with Carry-on constraints for air travel, because checking any luggage, but even more so electronic music gear is pretty much a schrodinger's cat type situation that is an unacceptable risk if it means the difference between performing or not, not to mention that how many pieces of gear would you be alright with never getting back because the reality is that somewhere along the chain of custody of luggage in regards to checking a bag with airlines it's pretty common for valuable items to never be seen again, or somehow not get loaded on the same flight as you are.
