A pipe cutter will leave nice clean cuts and is easier than a hacksaw. Both will work though

Use a Velcro strap around the front brake lever if you don’t want the bike to move forward. Also if anyone doesn’t think it is strong enough there are commercial ones available that use 16mm outer aluminium tubing and this is stronger than that, for extra piece of mind you could drill an extra hole in the outer tubing that aligns with a hole on the inner tube and put a large R clip through it.

Good job. I now have mine in Mexico. Thanks for the video. I was using a milk crate but as I was changing lowering links on my drz 400, a neighbour who was supposed to be holding the bike steady walked off. Bike fell over on top of me. Now taking pain killers for my shoulder and chest but just need time. I'm 68.

Great idea! I have got a c/stand on mine but won’t be doing any TET’ing on it! Not least as the lever bit sticking out is a good way to break yer left lower leg when things go shit-shaped 😬😬😬.

I found some walking poles in the basement that I think made the perfect trail stand. At shortest 250mm and longest 390mm.

Go to a second hand store and you can get crutches for pennies to make it even less expensive. Store like Good Will usually have a tub full of discarded crutches in perfect shape.

Go with it mate. Got one I made myself (too). There are lots of people who have used this method for years with no problems, so you can disregard the negative comments. Another version some people make/use is using solid bar, sliding inside a tube with a pin to set the required length. These types are even available commercially but why not make your own stuff when you can and save money? 👍 Looks like you haven't done the seat mod - so you don't have to use the allen-key to remove the front seat. Look into that one too. 😎

Don’t forget decent thick rubber stoppers on end. Really helps it hold and not damage bike.

Hi. It looks like a great idea but isn't there a great chance of moving the stand and dropping the bike while removing / installing the wheels in case of a puncture ?

I was doubtful too before I tried it. But if you take precautions I think it’s very stable. If changing back wheel put a Velcro strap around front brake. And if changing front wheel put steering lock on and put it in gear, and ideally wedge back wheel on a stone or against kerb. If you do those things I would say it’s very stable. It’s not going to break, so as long as on solid ground it should just hold up bike fine. (Of course in very strong wind, or on muddy ground etc. I would think twice.)

It works for me on the back wheel, but the front is pretty unstable.

Did you try it with the steering lock on, and rear wheel wedged against a rock or curb? Used this on 5 different bikes now. And it’s been fine for me on both wheels.

Load capacity of the crutch catches and tubes?? Sorry, there is no telling whether this will suddenly give way despite the fact it initially holds………..don’t think this is a good option

They state 210kg on the crutches. And that’s for full thing (arm rest etc). Not short straight section. So prob double that. And they are prob supporting about 70kg at most on my 200kg bike. Side stand is taking most. Then other wheel and my FIY stand are sharing rest. So they are much stronger than they need to be for this purpose.

@notexpatjoe well I prob wouldn’t use it for a Harley. But been using the same One for adv bikes, and dual sports etc for years now. And it’s been fine. Prob use it twice a week or so too. So gets lots of use.

Been using it for a few months now. Had zero issues.

its your bike your body, and your responsibility. Dont want to disrespect, but it seems too dangerous. centerstands are built to support 200+kg of metal with balance. Even with few strong wind bike would easily fall on opposite side of sidestand, where may someones head could be. I wont encourage any maintenance job with it... so think twice.

I doubted it before trying it. But it’s deff solid enough for a wheel change. As long as on good solid ground. And placed properly. Think if I was in the mud I would just lay bike on side anyway if I was in a pinch. And it is strong enough. The stated weight limit on the crutches was about the same as my bike weight. And it’s only holding less than half of that. (Side stand and other wheel doing over half the work. ) But yes I agree about the wind. We get fierce 40mph+ gusts where I live often this time of year. And I wouldn’t want to change a wheel in those conditions with it.

Yeah, with muddy floor or gust, having your bike on side is WAY much safer than that... As you mentioned and showed, few spray works or wheel check can be light enough for job, but when youre disassemling bolts and nuts, you're adding literally an additional pressure on stands. Those hollow and thin metal might look rigid, but get easily stressed and cracked. (we bikers all know that. Even frames get cracked.) Which can be a dangerous accident while your job. Thats why we pay for hundreds of dollars on those stands from brand, who takes legal responsibility, making with certified material.

Similar to trying to crush an egg in your hand by pushing on the ends; you can’t do it. I’d be willing to bet if the aluminum crutch tube was placed perfectly vertical, it would hold a small car up. Or at least a Gold Wing.
