Super Timber Wheels and Tires - Stock Inflatable or Du-Bro Super Lite? Four landings demos!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The tires that come with the E-Flite Super Timber make it prone to bouncing on landing. They are made with thin and flexible rubber that is very compressible resulting in rebound. See this test:
• bounce test with E-fli...
The next 4 segments show landings with the original and Du-Bro 4.5" Super Lite tires. I think you will see a major difference.
If you buy this model and have difficulty with smooth landings there is a very affordable fix. Just get the tire set for the SWS Timber. The main wheel tires are a good fit on the Super Timber, and at $16.99, a great value too. Here is a link to the SWS replacement parts page:

When I started flying we just flew. 47 years later I still just fly. Bent around the axle on a flying foam ice chest! This new Timber has just been put into a blender. No better flight performance than the last 4 other Timbers!

100% agree. The stock tires are too big (not enough elevator authority to 3-point) and too bouncy. I swapped to 4” Dubros so that the stance is more conductive to 3-point landings and to eliminate the bounce.

I got the 4.5" but both do the job.

I put in 5" inflatable DuBros, and she flies great! I think Dubro got rich off the Super Timber.

It is an amazing plane. The best I ever bought, and I have jets. All I want to do is fly this thing. It's so much fun.

I saw an interesting video where a pilot turned off AS3X and SAFE and the problem went away when he was landing the Super Timber. His logic was that the two stabilization systems were interfering with the plane landing in a stable manner, and it was correcting for the bouncing.

I'll try that again. However, I have seen other videos with the same issue. See this expert pilot at kzread.info/dash/bejne/nJdqtJeSl7yzldo.html at the 2 minutes point. I normally do wheel landings.

Jon is hardly an expert but the compliment is much appreciated. AS3X isn't causing bouncing. Wheel landing this plane takes a ton of finesse, it's definitely tricky. There's plenty of elevator authority to three point it every time though.

@@TwoBrosRC I've started doing 3-point too. That also takes finesse. Just ask the poor J3 I learned in so many years ago for my first tailwheel endorsement.

@@TwoBrosRC At least when using Jon's usual (insane) control throws 😂. Who am I, to argue with you, what kind of a pilot Jon is.... there are plenty of videos demonstrating his landing skills and they are definitely even beyond superb. So, if he says he couldn't get it not to bounce except for 3-wheelers, I trust that it is not a matter of skill level. 😉It certainly might be the "nature of the beast" as these air tires are bouncing balls and there is no dampening. Still, if you do have the right speed and no wind to grease the Timber in on its mains only - why would it have to bounce (unless there are some nasty bumps on the runway)? Having this said and despite my big respect for your channel (one of my absolute favorites) I still disagree with you that AS3X couldn't be the culprit for a plane to bounce on landings. Ultimately AS3X is mitigating environmental impact and it can only sense the change of the orientation in space using the gyro and then compare it to the stick movements to judge if the change was intended or not. If the bouncing is causing a dramatic change in the pitch angle all of a sudden, it will try to compensate using elevator. I actually have observed this with my little Habu SS 50mm that I initially had a very hard time to land without bouncing. When it did, it was sometimes throwing up the nose in the sky and every subsequent bounce was getting harder and harder... It was almost looking cartoony style, as an invisible force seemed to slam it harder into the ground after every bounce. Sadly, I could never try it with Gyro off, as I lost one of my landing gears and these are out of stock since almost a year meanwhile (in Germany) 🙄. Admittedly, the little Habu rocks even more w/o landing gear (and on 4S). Anyway, long story short: even though I have way less experience than you guys, I still think it wouldn't hurt to give it a try turning off gyro completely, to see if it does have an impact. As Jon loves Timbers (and possibly flies the new Timber off camera as well) he maybe want to try it out and share his findings?! 😋

have you had any issues with the eyelets where the wings connect ? { on the super timber} mine have tiny cracks on them .I've been trying to figure out the best way to repair them . They dont seem to be replacable . I don't want to fly it again untill I figure out a repair for them

While I agree with your overall assessment, I don’t think that a comparison to a nose wheel model is relevant to the issue (?)

Hi. Right, tricycle gear landings are less prone to bounce simply because the CG is ahead of the mains, not behind. However, you can bounce a C150 and it's not that had to do. A bounced 150 landing can easily result in a broken nosewheel and the safe thing is to power up and go around. I know, that 150 has a replacement nosewheel. The intent was to show I can do a smooth landing with no bounce. I do not have video of my many Timber EVO wheel landings, but they mostly looked just like the 150. Smooth as silk.

I love how everyone that got the plane early and did a review on it started with...OMG Eflite listened to us and put inflatable tires on a plane! to turning on the tires and saying how they suck because they can't land without bounce.....ROLFMAO! I have landed mine without bounce many times...yup I have hand bouncy landings with it but that was due to pilot error not the plane. And AS3X and safe have nothing to do with the bounce, From what I have witnessed with as3x and safe.....some guy just don't understand how it works or how to set it up correctly then blame it because they lack the skill or knowledge of how to use or set it up then crash because of it. Another thing I will point out is it is a STOL plane and it lands better in grass then a paved runway. But hey lets all blame everything but ourselves because we are all the best pilots and should never get bounce on landings! ROFLMAO!!!!!!

I'm not a great pilot. Full stall works better than wheel landings regardless of wheel choice.
