Super Tenere 1200 - crash test

I take the Super Tenere for a crash test. Very embarrassing, but worthwhile in testing the crash protection of the radiator which is excellent.

Not sure why the Super Tenere is underrated. Today I went down to my local dealership and sat on the following 2016 bikes back to back. KTM 1190, Honda Africa Twin and Yamaha Super Tenere. I can tell you without any reservation that the feel, fit and finish of the Super Tenere was miles above the other two bikes mentioned. Still not sure why the bike is underrated.

So what it comes down to is that you think you are right and you are going to tell me that I am wrong. If an ABS system is outstanding it shouldn't need to be switched off. You may wish to see the other videos in this series, including the Dirt Test. In short I have ridden thousands of dirt kilometres on the bike and it has the best abs system I have experienced and shits all over Beemer technology. I never once considered that I needed to switch it off. Even on very steep dirt hills.

@markbeermonster After I went down I straight away thought, 'How many parts have I broken?" and that I wouldn't be able to ride it. This is very well designed protection.

That's the point, it's not best for them. They think it is best for them. However if we were talking about the old Beemer system then I would agree with you without hesitation. The Yammy system on this bike is just sooo good.

@dave6ix You can see the tyre going into some dark slime. That stuff was slipperier than ice! My hip is a very nice blacky blue colour! Gear OK.

I hear people talk of the radiator all the time. I like where Yamaha put it. I see bikes like the New Triumph 1200 and the radiator is right behind the front wheel exposed. While it gets a lot of cool air there, I can see rocks, sticks, and other crap being sprayed up from the front wheel. Looks like a recipe for failure. Its good to know the Super T can take a good drop. If you ride on the dirt, its only a matter of time before you drop a bike, so its good to have some protection.

It was an interesting discussion. Basically he likes his beemer and can't accept that ABS has moved on considerably. But an interesting development has been the release of the KTM1190, official tomorrow 2/10/12, where ABS can easily be switched on and off. Look forward to testing the ABS on that bike. :) hopefully not in slime.

@abscrete This is a fantastic bike for the experienced rider. I would suggest you start on a Tenere or Suzuki DR650.

@edog200 If its like the slime we get here (Texas) its real easy to go right down just like you did. That stuff is slick. When I took physics in school, we did many problems like "A 5 kg mass is sliding on a frictionless surface..." That moss is what they used to make that surface frictionless. Glad you and the bike were ok.

Nice report, and great use of the "unexpected get-off." Glad you're mostly ok, too. Did the wheel lock up, or was it just the slime you hit? Too, was ABS on or off?

ouch i can feel the pulled muscle in the leg..would it have aquaplaned the front wheel, as you seemed to be leaning back more? this is the most important review as embarrassing moments can happen , usually for me at slow or no speed...glad it (and you, i'm presuming) took the dive well. probably one of the few times someone gets to dive 'out of the water' lol... . i'm picking mine up (i mean collecting it from the dealer : ) ) very soon..looking forward to it..well done mate!!

I just dumped mine on the left side at very low speed. The plastic guard and my saddle bag took all the damage. I sanded the guard and painted it and touched up the small spot on the bag. Good as new!

@dizzzave357 I know exactly what went wrong, it was a front wheel wash out where there was no traction. ABS and traction control on the Yammy is the best in the business it is bloody fantastic, but it's no miracle cure for me being dumb.

I have no relationship with Yamaha. I comment on the bike as I see it and feel it. ABS is outstanding and shits all over Beemers. As for the crash, people will make up their own minds. Considering how hard I fell the result was excellent. I didn't suggest it was indestructible. Not a beemer rider are you?

Your just too good for me. I choose not to respond because I've heard this stuff before and just because he is a Yamaha dealer it doesn't make him sensible, rational or an authority. There will always be motorcycle purists who want to be in full control of all dynamics of a bike. This (the choice of how good the ABS is) has less to do with reality and more to do with perception. For my money, the ABS on the Super Ten is outstanding and there are very few riders who should ride without it.

What caused the crash? The Tenere has both ABS and traction control, it would be nice to know what went wrong.

Further, the Yamaha dealer is stuck between a rock and a hard place. He wants to sell units and he wants to make sure the bike suits the broadest demographic/ego he can. If he says the ABS is the ducks guts, some purist will come out of the wood work, no, not ABS, we want autonomy. The best sales strategy is to try not to scare the horses. Please don't try to sell him as an authority, there is a huge component of self-interest in that equation.
