Super Nintendo SNES 2 (Model SNS-101) - Gaming Historian

Ойындар

The Gaming Historian takes a look at the SNES 2 model SNS-101, an updated version of the Super Nintendo. This console was smaller and lighter than the original, but was it worth it?

    My dad went to Walmart on Christmas knowing that I wanted a "Nintendo." What I wanted was a 64, what I got was this little guy here. I was pretty sad until I started playing Yoshi's Island. I loved this console and played on it for years. Thanks for the trip down memory lane Gaming Historian.

    Didn’t realize the gaming historian has been around this long. Nintendo did end up making new versions of the Wii in the form of the version without GameCube playback, and the Wii mini, and more recently there’s been revisions of the Switch as well. Interesting seeing these compared in the grand scheme of things.

    What is ironic about all of this is that in 2009 no one knew the value of these, whereas in 2019 the SNES Jr. is coveted as the best of the three-styles of SNES (SNES Multi-Chip, SNES 1-Chip, SNES Jr 1-Chip) as having the absolute best picture quality (paired with an RGB mod) and having the best controllers paired with them. Insane how things change over time. Love my SNES Jr. and wouldn't trade it for anything.

    I found an SNES 101 hidden on a storage shelf in late 1999 when I worked in the electronics section at Walmart. I didn't know the redesign existed, but I bought it as my original SNES had a broken part. My SNES 101 still works perfectly in 2022. When I started woodworking, I built gaming towers for my consoles and put little blocks at the front of the SNES 101's slot so I couldn't accidentally pull it off the tower during normal gameplay, something that had happened a lot. It's easily my lightest console.

    I have the SNES 2. By the time I got it, I already had the N64. But my grandpa owned the original SNES since launch, and I enjoyed that so much, I even got a couple of my own games for it (most important of which was the Super Game Boy). So it was definately worthwhile for me to get me my own SNES when the SNES 2 came out, especially since I'd also be getting my own copy of Yoshi's Island. I still own it, and in fact I still play it today.

    It's just too bad that the first redesigned Nintendo console in over a decade turned out to be the Wii Mini, which was almost completely unnecessary. The Wii Mini retailed for $99 and by the time it was released, you could easily find a regular Wii for the same price, if not somewhat cheaper and still have all the features that were removed such as WiFi capabilities (which are unfortunately gone now), the Gamecube backwards compatibility as well as Gamecube controller ports.

  • @Heffy_Boi

    @Heffy_Boi

    9 жыл бұрын

    RageUnchained Well, I think I'd beg to differ on _that_ one. Despite the rough way Nintendo allowed it's users to play their old Wii games on their Wii Us, it still upscaled them quite well. Apart from that, the Wii U has sported some great games that, although look suspiciously similar in terms of graphics that we're all too familiar with from last gen; are still a significant enough leap from the original Wii's capabilities, especially due to the fact that the Wii U is Nintendo's first HD console. Now, while I would also go as far to say that Nintendo could've gone further with their graphical update, they've still done some wondrous things with what they've got and, as silly as it sounds, I often find myself distracted by how _fun_ their more recent games have been and I barely even think about Nintendo's graphics engines. :)

    Yeah the AV cables (the red, yellow & white ones) work so much better. At least in my experience anyway. I had an RF Adapter that I used a PlayStation 2 & Nintendo GameCube with because my TV doesn't have a video input. The problem is that I would sometimes get that static buzzing noise while trying to play games or watch DVDs (in PlayStation 2's case). In late 2005 or early 2006, my sister gave me her old DVD Player which came with an RF Modulator box. I just hook the AV cables for whatever console I'm using or the DVD Player into the Modulator & well.... No annoying static buzzing noise anymore. I use that RF Modulator with Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64 & Sega Genesis now too. No problems whatsoever.

The N64 itself was also very heavy and durable and something you wouldn't just be able to pull the shelf with a yank on the controller. I do think it's a big downside of the Switch. Not just the tiny cards but the console itself is very delicate and not really suited to the abuse children will put it under.

    I don't know if anyone commented on this, as I'm late to the game. However, there was a serious flaw with the SNES 2. Because there was no eject button, the ROM cart had to be easier to discharge from the reader, which meant that it didn't fit in nearly as snug as the SNES 1. The major issue with this was that the game might turn off in mid-playing if you jostled the console (picked up, etc). If it was a game with a memory chip for saving data, this would mean that there would be a high chance of data loss, which happened twice to me, making my experience with this system very unhappy.

    The Wii has such horrible wifi, removing it was almost s blessing. A $20 usb network adapter does wonders over the original Wii wifi controller. Of course, you have to then plug it in with cat5, or use a WiFi bridge, but if anything, Nintendo should have updated the Wii to support proper 802.11g or perhaps the newly released 802.11n.

    Aaron Carmody That's actually not a new version of the original Wii, it's a whole new console, it's part of the new, current generation, like XboxOne and PS 4.
