English version was a big success in Europe and more but since the Spanish version got released the response in Spanish speaking countries was tremendous.Sales went phenomenal esp in Latin America.Since 1979 till now this has been established as a traditional music piece there.Even In Mexico it was N01 for 32 weeks!

Hello again! I am from Argentina when ABBA premiered "Chiquitita" at the UNICEF Concert here, it was followed on television and "Chiquitita" was ABBA's first great success in Argentina How it was also successful in Mexico and other Latin American countries, ABBA decided to record it in Spanish And the success was greater in the Hispanic American public, including Spain (these is a perfomance to 'Aplauso' in Spain TV) The adaptation of the lyrics into Spanish was made by the Argentine brothers Buddy & Mary McCluscky It is not an exact translation, in fact in the original third stanza (the first after the chorus) the adaptation in Spanish does not make it and repeats that of the first stanza For this reason, part of the spirit of the song is lost And the effusive singing of the second chorus with the lyrics that precedes it remains a little misplaced. This is not the fault of ABBA but of the person who did not complete the adaptation ABBA already makes an extraordinary effort that I believe no other group of similar level did: leave their mother tongue (which is also not English) and sing in several languages foreign to their culture and ideosyncracy, and do so with respect, professionalism and quality From what I said before, prefer ABBA singing "Chiquitita" in English, but admit that they do a fantastic well job in Spanish P.S.: maybe you don't remember, but in January 31 (4 months ago) you did a reaction to "Felicidad" (ABBA song "Happy New Year", but in Spanish): these is in your ABBA playlist kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZXx7ktCYnK7IfKw.html

Thanks for the ABBA. The whole Spanish album is really really good. You should check out more from it. It was a project thought up by the girls while the guy's were busy writing. They took it real seriously and felt they owed it to Spanish fans. It took like a year to get it all right. Was a massive hit and the guy's give high praise to them for it.

Not sure how many platinums they have altogether Austin, but to give you an idea, just their 'ABBA GOLD' album is 20 times platinum in the UK alone

Great that you are reacting to Spanish versions! Top Tip: Write "Espanol" or something in the title so all South America can become your fans!

They couldnt speak Spanish either - they did the album of Spanish versions but couldnt speak the language to any real extent. The way she pronounces it makes me hungry because it sounds like Chicken Tikka .... mmmm Chicken Tikka. At some stage you need to check out I Know Him So Well by Elaine Paige and Barbara dickson its the most ABBA song ever by someone who isnt ABBA (The music is by the ABBA guys)

@Niclas Eriksson They did speak English - most people in Scandanavia can speak at least basic English as the structure and syntax are so similar as are a lot of words. In ABBAs case they were fluent English speakers.

@Niclas Eriksson . Either and Neither have similar spellings but mean quite different things - In this case I was pointing out that they did an album without knowing the language at any more than a basic level and that when Austin said he cant speak Spanish that they couldnt either. They do a serviceable job of singing in Spanish although I have heard that some of the pronunciations are a little off - but thats the case with most people speaking a foreign language they arent all that familiar with. Yeah I was aware that most Scandanavians can speak English its about 80 to 90% of people I believe but less in say Finland than Sweden

@Niclas Eriksson - Yeah they are a little different than the originals. Pronunciations wise they are pretty good but also obviously not native Spanish speakers in regards to inflections and the like - Spanish speaking people would understand it fine but it would be like listening to anyone with an accent there are little differences .
