    One detail I like about the Super Mario RPG intro is that it gives you the impression that it’s a standard “Mario vs. Bowser” story only to pull a first-act twist with the Smithy Gang. Notice that the scenes primarily show Mario, Mallow, and Geno fighting against classic Mario enemies, not spoiling the fact that Bowser and Peach are actually playable characters this time around. They even went a step further by not showing Exor on Bowser’s Castle at the end of the intro until you’ve reached that point in the game for the first time (although he can be seen in the background during the Booster Hill sequence).

    An even more obscure thing about the Star Egg is that it has a very slightly different animation when Peach/Toadstool uses it. The star does its little butt wiggle slightly faster, and the sound it makes on the second shake is ever so slightly pitched higher than for other characters. Now THAT'S obscure.

Getting three matching cards will trigger a fireworks sequence and grant you an amount of lives depending on which three cards you matched. Mushrooms give 2 lives, Fire Flower gives 3 lives, Super Star gives 5. The pattern matches the fireworks at the ending of Super Mario RPG depending on how many fireworks you buy. Oh, it's really not that obscure, but a lot of people might never notice: when you get a game over in this game, you lose all your progress and restart at the last save point, but you keep all your experience. It's just one of the ways the game takes it easy on you. If you immediately save again after a game over you'll probably notice the level being overwritten on the save file. By exploiting this feature I once made a save file where Mario starts the game at Mario's pad (the earliest point you can save) at level 27, making the entire game a complete massacre.

    Use this to do the starman glitch. Save before a starman box is coming up. Get the starman and run thru a bunch of enemies. Once the starman runs out, die on on purpose. You will start at your last save point, but will have retained the experience you got while on the starman. The starman can only be used once. But if you die after using it and before you save the game again, the starman is reobtainable. This is used for experience grinding. This is only practical where there is a starman right around a save point. Bandit's way has one. Sea has one. Best one is Land's end. Other starman locations like Kero Sewers and Volcano are too far away from a save point to be practical. This is what the comment above mine is referring to, albeit I have fleshed it out and explained it a little more.

First time I was frustrated from the night before but I eventually got it. I was already post game (remake) so it ended up being useless... However, the second time was actually because I made a new save file, proud I finally it, and even gave myself a challenge, ONLY Mario attacks, it helped in the late game to have gotten the 100 jumps EARLY, I actually was extremely chill for the second one, so keep at it man! I believe ANYONE can do it with enough time and practice, if it helps use a metronome at 68 beats. That's one of the helps for me, the other is to just focus your sight at one or two spots, the top of the enemy, or on the numbers, or a third spot if you don't use spiny's but a flying enemy (for some reason) the shadows.

    About 10 days before this video was posted, someone asked about the Monstro Town Mushroom on GameFAQs. It's possible that this video was being edited while the first person in human history finally asked "What's with that Mushroom in Monstro Town?" The Sheep Attack can be used on Machine Made Yaridovich, but I think it only works after he splits up. I used it on him while doing a low level run. I'm pretty sure the other Machine Made bosses are immune. Another interesting thing about the Marrymore Hotel is that you're not allowed to save as a bellhop because the manager won't let you take any breaks. But you can still save if you jump to the save platform from the toad woman's head. Toad popping up in the menu and saying "Secret code found" and "I'll play with you as many times as you like" sounds like it was an early trigger for the Beetle Game. I'm guessing they programmed the mini game to be played by entering the secret code, but later made the Game Boy a purchasable item and left the old code in.

    100 jumps in a row @29:58 is something else all together. For those who have never attempted it, it becomes physically and mentally taxing. After awhile, you begin to loose count of your jumps, "how much further, how much longer!" You become aware of your physical state, "I haven't blinked for awhile, I need to blink..." but blinking is a risk to your perfect timing. Your eyes begins to blur as your retinas hyper focus on the same 10 pixels and flashing stars. And all the while, you know you're going to fail, you just know it.

    I wager the Spin Shoes and the animation are references to the spin jump from Super Mario World, which let you jump safely on things that normally would hurt you - though it usually didn't harm them unless they were already vulnerable to the basic jump, then it did more damage. Also, here is a trick: If you're at a place with a star after a save point, you can use it to clear the room of all but one, let the star end, and let the last group kill you, you'll go back to the save point, the star and enemies will be back, but you keep the EXP. You can repeat this as much as you like.

    These are more like observations than anything, but there’s two things I caught on while playing the game regarding the party members’ sprites: First is that during battle, the little HP windows showing each of the characters’ health use said character’s diagonally downward facing sprites for the portrait, but the exception to that is Peach, the portrait for her HP window is entirely unique! I wonder of there’s a full body sprite of it in the code somewhere… Second is that every character has sprites for getting hit, which on the overworld are repurposed for when said characters are surprised by something, and the overworld is the only way you can see the diagonally downward facing surprised sprites for the characters… except for Geno, as there isn’t a single scene where he gets surprised by something while facing downwards (again, I wonder if that sprite even exists…). Also an addendum, this is almost true for his angry sprite too, but you can see it in the second Belome fight, where a Geno Clone will use it if he casts Flame Stone.

  • @chrispyynugget1537
    @chrispyynugget15377 ай бұрын

    With the remake out, here are some fun revisions to this video about the remake. Geno is the only party member to deal 9999 damage, but not the only one in game with the addition of Booster's post game boss battle. And for anyone curious, yes the Exor glitch still works. The Axem Rangers do get their own unique teleportation animations. Its fun to see unused content finally utilized! The secret code exclusive to the Japanese version is no longer region locked. It still does nothing though. The Super Suit is not easier to get but now you can keep track of how many jumps you do. Although I feel like it could be distracting knowing how much jumps you have. Whether the timing has gotten easier im not sure but theres definitely a change in timing past the 12th jump. The max ive got it to was about 24 jumps. Punchinello's status as not part of the Smithy gang is more obvious in the remake due to the post game rematches involving non Smithy gang bosses since the postgame takes place after you beat the game but to make the post game possible, the Smithy fight is treated like a dream sequence. Its a little weird but it somehow makes the postgame fit chronologically. If I missed anything feel free to add on. When this game was new, an old frienemy of mine from middle school convinced me that Luigi was possible to get in your party. You had to find his wish in Star Hill the first time you go there, and then you're supposed to fight a randomly encountered enemy that was a Mastadoom but he was like a palate swap of him. He's supposed to be a lot harder than Mastadoom, and Luigi actually helps you beat him, and becomes selectable afterwards. I was a fool and believed him and tried this SO many times. It wasn't until I finally got the internet in my house and I was able to look up "can you play as Luigi in Mario RPG?" that I finally let go of this absolute LIE!

    A game developer who works at Wayforward said on Twitter that the story they heard about the name is that its Tukwila with the syllables spelled backwards to form La-kwi-tu or Lakitu. Tukwila is a city located in King County of the State of Washington which is the same county where Nintendo of America's headquarters in Remond is located and more importantly, its where Nintendo of America was first established! Nintendo of America's first headquarters was a warehouse in Tukwila rented out to them by a local businessman named Mario Segale, whom Nintendo would later name their mascot after. With this in mind, it does seem highly probable that the localizers for the original Super Mario Bros. decided to honor the city where the company got its start by naming a character in the game after it, especially since in addition to Mario they also named Kirby after John Kirby, the lawyer who defended Nintendo against Universal Studios' lawsuit against them over Donkey Kong. It just seems like Nintendo at the time had a thing about naming characters after people & places that helped shaped company in their early days.

Most of them in English are just random non sequiturs and rarely even jokes. In Japanese, most of them are pop culture references, but almost all of them are weirdly obscure, or seemingly unrelated to the enemy associated with them. Overall gives the impression they were some last minute idea whipped up as a joke and they just used whatever random quotes they happened to think of, almost like a placeholder. Also, one of them is possibly a sex joke in Japanese.

For some reason I was also not able to figure that one out (Even with the ingame clue) and when I found out from someone who I used to babysit, I, um, pretty much kicked myself afterwards wondering how on Earth I was not able to find it... Then there was an ice puzzle from the GBA game Buktai, and when I was shown how to solve it and how to smith certain weapons that I was missing, I was in disbelief at the fact that I did not figure those out on my own either (My younger brother did though) as it was so easy yet the outrageously difficult book order part earlier on, even though it took me frackin forever, I got through it... Something I find very frustrating in the gaming community is how a game gets 💩 on for being too easy. In most games there’s nothing stopping someone from making self-imposed rules to up the difficulty. Mario RPG for example, use starting weapons and gear, go for completion, use only one character…the challenges are endless with a little critical thinking. I find this approach much more enjoyable than playing a “difficult” game. Mainly due to the fact that what’s making the game difficult is nothing new: damage sponge enemies, 2-3 hits = death, tight timing windows, precision inputs, extended periods of invulnerability while the enemy blows their rage wad all over you…it’s the same thing every time and I’m rather bored of it.

This is the best looking remake I have seen in awhile that looks incredibly faithful in its core gameplay and look, from what we have seen so far, and that, we should only be eternally grateful for, not nitpicking how "new" it looks and not liking it because we are pixel art snobs. I also don't think we owe being thankful to any company, we shouldn't hide our criticisms in favor of pleasing companies so they do well next, and i don't have any criticism of the game so far aside from the original not needing a remake in my opinion, i only feel like that artstyle has run its course a long time ago.

    The 100 super jumps is also a bit trickier than even a 3 frame window. The idle animation on certain enemies moves the timing of the jump around. Some enemies like the mimic chests don't move at all, most enemies bob up and down though. Bosses on the other hand can have complicated idle animations, e.g. tank-head Smithy is very wiggly.

    Plus the game legitimately lies to you on when to press the button. Toad's tutorial clearly tells you to press it when you're about 'one Mario' above the enemy, or like one pixel before your sprites touch. It turns out you're basically supposed to press it when your sprites are overlapping, but not one twentieth of a second later. It turns out my childhood record of 16 was actually from me getting so tired of practicing, I was consistently late three or four times, but not _too_ late, in a row.

If you get the feeling right, you can learn to use that little freeze-frame moment as a mental cue to press the button. All that's left is to fall into a trance and not blink until you've done it. Also, I don't know if you've had this experience, but I find it much easier to do on certain enemies. I honestly found Spinies very hard to do it on, for some reason, yet everyone practices on them. I like to do it on certain bosses. The earliest I boss I find it easy to do on is Croco, but after him, Belome works really well, to the point where I feel like the game is a little more forgiving on the timing. Later on, Jinx works pretty well too. I always kind of wondered if there was some reason they seemed easier to do it on, or if it was just me?

    @SonicmaniaVideos As series, they *are* completely unrelated. Nothing in either of the latter two series narratively builds upon anything set up in Mario RPG. They are mechanically and thematically similar in many ways, but that does not make them sequels to it. Your original comment heavily implies that it is incorrect to say that they "sort of" branched off from Mario RPG, and so I can reasonably assume that you intend to claim that they *literally* branched off from Mario RPG, which is simply not the case.

    The fireworks making a different explosion at the credits depending on how many you bought is probably based on the end-of-level bonuses and toad houses from SMB3. A mushroom at 2 purchases, flower at 3 purchases, and star at 5 matches up exactly with how many lives you’d get if you matched mushrooms, flowers, and stars in Mario 3-2up, 3up, and 5up respectively. Matching at the end of levels even had the screen rise up to show a firework of whatever you matched.

    I don't have recording equipment or really know how to set all that up (old man alert), but for the super jumps, for some reason the Spiny enemy and its variants always seemed really really hard to do it on. Strangely enough, I've found certain bosses actually seem easier to do it on, though that could just be me. Croco, Jinx, and Belome. Especially Belome, during his first fight. The game seems strangely forgiving on the timing with him. Also, during the jumps, watch Mario right when he lands on an enemy. He actually stops for just a split second before launching up off the screen again. If you get the feeling right, you can use that split second as a visual cue for when to hit the button. I recommend this: save the game before Belome's first fight (or rather, savestate at the beginning of the fight - old man alert again, lol) and turn the sound down on your monitor. Learn to use the visual cues for the jump, hitting the button right when Mario has come to a stop on top of Belome - not right when he lands, but a split second after - and don't blink! As you practice, you might even find the timing getting burned into your mind, so you start to _feel_ it. I hope this helps someone!

    I always assumed b'tub ring was short for bathtub ring, the vexing household cleanliness problem that used to be a bit more common. Its random use here might just be a whimsical example of the "___ ring" pattern, especially if it has to be a bit cleaner than love-love ring, and there's probably some heavy tub action in Marrymore, so why not? (And semi-related: no mention of Peach's XXX/Toadstool's ??? in region differences?)

  • @CenturyBlade

    @CenturyBlade

    B'tub Ring is short for bathtub ring, idk why Cyber missed that memo. Back in 1994 video game translation teams had to be very conservative about making references to "Love" in order to conform to the ESRB, so I guess someone in a writers room was like "Uhhh what do we do with this" and the first suggestion that came to someone's mind was "Bathtub! Because that's a thing couples do right, they... share a... bathtub?" and first dude's like FUCKIN GENIUS LET'S ROLL WITH IT. Strangely enough, the abbreviation "B'tub" seems completely unnecessary, since the fixed-width font of SMRPG supports 12 characters, exactly the proper amount to spell out Bathtub Ring. There are even plenty of other items in the game which use this fully, so it's probably just done to further obfuscate what this ring is really supposed to mean for that coveted E for Everyone rating.
