I hated the lack of alternate songs in Mario Maker and how people don't appreciate the difference that music makes. New songs may be too much to expect but Nintendo has a massive library of songs that could have been used. Hearing the same tracks in every stage makes everything feel the same, regardless of what goes into the levels.

Very true, a wider selection of overworld songs per theme, or at least the ability to add music in via an SD card or something could have made a huge difference in the overall customization aspect.

Yeah Mario Land 1 and 2 are actually really unique 2D mario games compared to the new super mario bros series. I hope nintendo goes back and remake Mario land 1 and 2.

Oh my god this hit me right in the nostalgia bone. I was like: "Oh cool, that's how they recreated the exploding shells!" "Here comes the Airplane section!" I really need to download that OST. Good feels. Fun fact for anyone who doesn't know: The Bombshell Koopa was used instead of normal Koopas because programming the ricochet effect from normal Koopa shells would have taken too long for the Game Boy. I wanna go back to Sarasaland... :D

Well, more accurately, it would have taken too long for their launch window deadline. Traditional koopa physics were implemented in Super Mario Land 2.

Explosive turtles return

Man, seeing this recreation of Super Mario Land in Mario Maker really makes me wish there was a Super Mario Land 2 game style for the Wii U version that also includes music and ideas from Super Mario Land 1 and Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. That would be so great and so much better than having Super Mario Bros 2 as a game style, because Super Mario Land 2 plays just like a traditional 2D Mario game and has some of the common Mario enemies like Goombas and Boos. Having SMB2 USA in Mario Maker would make it the most inconsistent style ever as SMB2 USA is simply just a reskin of the Japan only Doki Doki Panic and therefore plays differently from the other Mario games. Nintendo can't just replace the Goombas, Koopas and Boos with Shy Guys and Hoopsters. The biggest problem is one that I didn't realize until now: There are no Underwater stages or physics in SMB2 USA. Like that is a big problem that for whatever reason, some people like GameXplain seem to overlook. SMB2 USA does have waterfalls and water, but you can't swim in it. And yes I am aware that Nintendo added in the Ghost House and Airship themes in Super Mario Bros 1 when the original game didn't have that at all, but because SMB2 USA has a different style of gameplay, it would be too much work for them. I'm not saying that an SMB2 USA game style is impossible but it's not really a good idea. This is why people need to take off their rose tinted spectacles and think things through before wishing for things they want in Mario Maker. I know that Super Mario Land 2 has its own caviots like the game being one color, but the people behind Mario Maker can easily get around that like making the 1Up Mushroom a heart and maybe put stripes on the Bulls Eye Bill Blaster.

That was actually the first game I ever played (And the first one I ever finished). I really brings back some memories. I still have the cartridge and got it on the 3DS' Virtual Console to play. Congrats on remaking it, the final battle really surprised me.

It was originally very simple in terms of gameplay. It played somewhat more closely to the real Tatanga fight, but before rendering, I thought of the idea you see in the video and I was really proud of how it turned out.

I got in trouble for playing Mario Land late at night, so my mom took it away from me and hid it. Somewhere. 20 years later I still haven't found it. Now my Gameboy is gone, so I couldn't play it anyway. But hearing this music brought back so much nostalgia.

Sarasaland never looked lovelier. :) Sure hope there'll be a Tatanga costume mushroom one day. :)

This is by far my favorite video of yours, KHAce! Especially love that you used the music from the game!

Very impressive! I really like how you did the waterfalls in 3-2. Really enjoy playing Super Mario Land, and felt that this was a excellent recreation.

One of the few Mario games I never beat (of the classics, you youngins and your new fangled 3D contraptions and your Pee Yews). I played it a few times when I was probably...7 on a friends game boy. I recall it being really hard. This was amazingly well done man, awesome job!

minenice55 I have an original copy of Super Mario Land 2 and the original Wario Land but sadly never beat them or had the original Mario Land so I had to download it on the 3DS VC. it took about a month to beat (I'm used to Super Mario World type running and jumping so it was hard to control Mario) but yeah it was a great game

Tbh mario maker needs more styles and themes... Like the wasteland (Like, lava area but not castle)and the sky area (the cloud place, not airship). Maybe even new bros 2? Because maybe people would want the wall jump but not the spin jump? And honestly the tanooki is stupid hard to control in bros 3, I have mashing that button, it's hard to hold y AND mash b, I prefer holding it. Maybe have the Propeller shroom shakeable to become the penguin suit, and the fire flower to ice flower? honestly these things need to happen... OH YEAH, AND SLOPES! and maybe a troll option to make tracks invisible...

Unlike the other videos, where I had time to go at whatever pace I wanted, I really wanted to get this done by New Years so I started the project on the 26th, made the levels for 20 hours over 5 days, and took 6 hours to edit + 4 hours to render (twice). I finished it about 4 hours before New Years struck.

well done! that's very well put together - really enjoyed seeing how you managed to put together the levels and bosses - was impressed with Tatanga that was really creative!

UUUUUUG I wish we got more music for Mario Maker! XD That alone adds so much to this video. The levels themselves are amazingly accurate. Amazing job!

it's been a while since I've been here. I remember your last Mario maker video based off if Kirby, which I suggested as you know, but I had a different name back then. Glad to see another Mario video!

I to this day always tear up when the ending theme in Super Mario Land starts up. Something about the nostalgia makes it so final, and a little sad. A lot of it I suppose is I finished that game for the first time when I was around 4. One of the earliest games I remember seeing the end of. I had always hoped those two games would get a remake style treatment someday, this is as close as it'll ever be. Thanks for this, it was beautiful.

That world/Level 1-1 music is so good. I still have memories of playing this game back 20 years ago since it was the first Mario game I played.

So much nostalgia. SML was one of the first games I ever finished on my own. In retrospect, some of the level layouts were weird if not questionable, but all the original enemy and scenery designs for this game were really neat. Great job recreating here. Many of your substitutes were very creative. My only wish is that we could've let the ending theme play out all the way. ;w; This game's soundtrack is some of Hip Tanaka's most impressive work, given how bouncy and fun it is the hardware limitations.

It's at least heavily edited for a pure gameplay video. Starmen in particular were a pain as they would always produce music, meaning that every action that had a sound effect had to be put back in with the Mario Land Starman theme over it. The only level not possible in Mario Maker though was the final one, as that warp pipe count in the actual game would not lead to a flagpole. With that said though, I'm glad you liked it. :)

Yes! You added the exploding koopa troopas. I think that if they do another update for either game they should implement those in the game

That is an amazing recreation of Super Mario Land. Very creative... and the editing of the sound was well done, too - but you forgot to add that "ää" sound effect whenever a boss was taking a hit.

This is simply amazing! I'm a bit disappointed that none of the SML assets were ever added to the game even in the updates. Here's hoping they make it into the inevitable SMM2 on Switch (along with both SMB2 sets). I was surprised though that you went with springs to replace the rocks in 3-1 rather than the large moles.

This game doesn't deserve to be ignored by Nintendo. It has aswesome ideas like the submarine, planes and original level designs. Even its music deserve to be reworked.

Shame you aren't able to make it black and white due to the game not allowing it but this was a really great effort. I thought it was really funny when the blooper landed into the bowser mobile in the last stage.

Great job. A few minor nitpicks I won't go over too much due to limitations of Mario Maker (the spike fields having springs due to lack of rideable rocks primarily), but very good overall. Super Mario Land, Super Mario Land 2, Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World are the only Mario games I've beaten multiple times. I still play through SML and SML2 regularly, even.

Ha ha ha, the high heels as a jumping vampire on chai kingdom's stage looks very funny. lol

2 Things nintendo needs to add: 1. The option to make a set of worlds where you give a set number of lives and power ups/coins persist between levels. 2. Blocks providing power ups on an if/then basis so that say small mario gets a mushroom, big mario gets a flower.

Chaos AE The fire flower/mushroom combo has been possible since the 2nd update. Place a fire flower, then place the mushroom in the same spot. The mushroom will overlay on top of the flower. You can then place it in a block or whatever you wish, like normal.
