Both of these first entries are among my least favorite 2D games in their respective series, but they are a necessary starting point. (I'll cut ahead though and say I think Sonic 2, while it is not my favorite 2D Sonic game, is both a huge improvement on Sonic 1 and also a BILLION times better than Mario Lost Levels, or even Mario 2 USA.) Also what are your favorite 2D Sonic games? Just a series I'm into (more than Mario) and something I like to know in general :)

Haven’t played a ton of 2D sonics tbh, mania is probably the best I’ve played so far, though I’m really optimistic for sonic 2!

Sonic 1 complains are mostly skill issue, people wanna hold right, and putting Mario 1 above it , oh daring today aren’t we? I wonder where I’ve heard all of this before.

Yeah, no. Sonic 1 complains are a level design issue, one that has plaged sonic games through their history. The best, most fun levels are always those that don't rely (too much, it's still Sonic) in "surprise danger/death out of fucking nowhere" that you can't avoid unless you KNOW it is comming or you were going at very slow speeds, something completely at odds with the idea of "Gotta go fast!". That's no skill, that's memorization. And I say that as a Sonic fan (well, fan of both franchises, really). The best Sonic games either tried to avoid that, or had the decency of putting shields before the surprise attack, so instead of penalizing the player with the loss of rings for not being able to predict the future, they get the reward of keeping said shield if they DO. Mario, on the other hand, puts the skill and platforming on the center of the gameplay. A good player can go through the levels at top speed while avoiding dangers and jumping over pipes and platforms with no problem, without having to rely on memorization. Because Mario is slower, you can react to most things with no problem, so long as you have the skill. With Sonic, unless you have the reflexes of a cat, you better know it is comming, so you can start avoiding them BEFORE they appear on the screen. That's not the only problem, though. Sonic 1 levels are inconsistent. The ones that let you RUN, have fun with the main component of its gameplay, are inherently more fun than Marble zone or Labyrinth zone. And they are half the levels in the game. In other words, you have HALF of the levels being more boring BY DESIGN than the other half, because you can't really use the momentum that made the Sonic games unique. And Sonic is certainly a worse jumper than Mario, less precise, have a worse acceleration and once you've made a jump, you are more or less commited, while Mario can fix his jumps much more. So if you put Sonic in a precision level, with slow advance, he does worse than Mario and it feels worse for the player. That's why Sonic, in the 3d games, have a homming feature, something Mario DOESN'T NEED. That said, there are Sonic games that do great in this regard. My favorite is Sonic 3 & Knukcles, you can go wild, using the momentum to have a lot of fun, with some parts that require more precision, but not slowing the game too much, and mostly avoiding the feared "Surprise danger/death from fucking nowhere".

@@Drake4Biscuts Sonic 1,2,3, CD, Sonic Advance 1,2,3, the sonic rush games, the 3D ones... Every sonic game does it. In fact, Sonic Mania does it because, at this point, it's a feature of the franchise, and it does it LESS than others.

Super Mario Bros. has a more timeless charm even compared to Bros. 2, 3 & World, whereas Sonic 1’s level design is a bit clunky in comparison to Sonics 2, 3 & maybe Knuckles!

I have only ever beaten 1991 sonic the hedgehog not 1985 super Mario bros

I like Mario more but Sonic 1 is sick!

I think mario bros one is good but just hasnt aged the best but idk about sonic 1, i played 2 and liked it but not one

If you can do Super Mario Bros vs. Sonic the Hedgehog (8-Bit) Master System and Super Mario World vs. Sonic the Hedgehog,its way more equals.But i can still say sonic is better in this video.(i dont care mario's classic or they're not release in same time)

Sonic 1 has higher highs but lower lows for me, but for both of these games I’d much rather play their sequels (except for The Lost Levels)

I think Sonic 1 holds up extremely well, but I need to replay the first Mario game to make a proper comparison. Having said that, NSMB DS is awesome and I love it

@@mrpro538 That's why it is considered a masterpiece and Miyamoto a genius. They did almost everything right from almost nothing. I'm glad you had fun! To be honest, though, I can't be unbiased with that game. Not only it was my first game ever, I've had several versions of it (well, two, the original in the NES, and the Super Mario Bros DX version in the Gameboy Color)

@@lenlimboI think both it and the first Sonic game are 8/10 games. Really good games even to this day. theres a reason they spawned massive franchises

@@mrpro538 For sure. SMB is the most important of the two, as it spawned a whole genre, but Sonic 1 is still great. Better than many later platformers.

Between sonic and marios classic video game music sonics is better mario has 2 good ones in my opinion the first level in mario one and the first level in mario 2 in sonic games almost all of the music was great

Not even close.

as a sonic fan i can say the 1st sonic game was pretty bad when there are so many good games but its not as bad as sonic 06

mario’s first game is better than sonic 1 because mario 1 is the 3rd best classic mario game but sonic 1 is the worst classic sonic game.

Fax,Mario bros 1 is better than sonic 1,they say sonic 1 is better bcuz it has better graphics but no,sonic 1 was released in 1991 and mario bros 1 in 1985,mario bros saved videogames as a whole

Sonic 1 had a ok story so did mario 1 the opening levels sonic 1 did it better with green hill marble zone did hurt the pace a bit but it’s pretty decent and mario has the iconic 1-1 but after that it’s was pretty ok both have aged a bit with time I think they are almost equal maybe sonic 1 a bit better

yes
