I remember playing the classic version of Mario Bros on NES when I was roughly 3. It was one of the first games, if not the first, that I ever played. My dad showed me an exploit at the end of the first level in world 4 (I think) where you can obtain the max number of lives.. They sold it to a pawnshop because our NES got to where it would hardly ever read the cartridges. They told me they were fixing it, and I believed it for years, until I was old enough to recognize that the store was a pawn shop. Lol We eventually got the Super Nintendo, and Mario Allstars. So I'm a lot more familiar with that version's graphics. Really has me feeling nostalgic seeing that game with those graphics in this video. I'm sure I probably still have that Mario Allstars cartridge somewhere. I need to find it and the rest of my Super Nintendo games that I may still have. Edit: 8:32 Woah. I'd forgotten all about that mode. Now I really want to find and replay it. Lol

There's something weirdly heartwarming about Jirard completing a game as iconic as Super Mario Bros. It's just kinda nice.

My first gaming experience was in the pediatric wing of the local hospital in 1991 when I was seven years old, a few weeks before Christmas. I was in the hospital with pneumonia, and I found out the nurse's station had an NES (or just "a Nintendo" back then) that you could call down and ask for, and they'd wheel it in on a cart and let you play Super Mario Bros for 30 minutes. I had never played a videogame before, and I was hooked. And since it was Christmas time, I suddenly DESPERATELY wanted one. I was discharged a couple weeks before Christmas and god bless my parents, they managed to track down an NES at an Eckerd's drugstore a week later. I still have that NES set up with the rest of my Nintendo consoles in my studio/office now at 35, and the only thing I've ever had to do to it is replace the 72 pin connector. Great memories.☺️

There needs to be more love for Super Mario: All Stars. Looks, sounds, and plays absolutely amazing. I grew up on the version as a kid, and it's always exciting when people give that version recognition.

Surprised there's no mention of World 9 in Lost Levels (even though you said 21 worlds which I can count World 9 in there without counting duplicates...) Especially since unlocking it in All-Stars requires to not use warp zones and have to complete the first 8 worlds in one go (with as many game overs as you want). Or even the horrible idea of having to finish Lost Levels 8 times on the Disk System to unlock World A to D (no joke, I did say 8 times).

Bowser has that many castles cuz he's just tryin' to flex on us.

I love how he started the video simply repeating the name as a way to convey admiration, but in my head it sounded like a quote from James Bond. The name? Mario. Mario Mario.

I have been playing Super Mario Bros for 30 years now, from the original NES release, to the All-Stars version, Virtual Console on the 3DS, and with Switch Online... and I have STILL yet to beat it!

Super Mario Bros 3 has always felt like the "real" SMB2 to me, given the fact that "The Lost Levels" is more of an expansion pack than a sequel, and the American version of SMB2, you know... basically a rehash of Doki Doiy Panic as mentioned.

Doki doki panic only came out as a promotion for select regions in japan. So as far as the rest of the world is concerned Super Mario USA is a new game, much more nee than the Lost Levels.

Thank you Jirard for this wonderfully nostalgic video that has served as the only bright spot in what has otherwise been a really shitty day for me.

Both 2's are fun, but I'm glad we got Supper Doki Doki bro's in the west. The Japanese 2 feels more like a hard mode expansion pack than a new game honestly. Like, something that would be a $10 DLC today

If I had to guess for a reason why Bowser needs all those Castles. His goal overall is to both take Princess Peach, and to take over the Mushroom Kingdom. But you cannot rule or control an area without a military presence, so they likely act as fortresses to house the armies that patrol the immediate region. Also, Mario has to get through them in order to get Peach back. So they act as a lair of security, and if you ever "Game Over" do to dying in one or having a hard one drain your lives, they certainly did their job as the 1 man who can stop him is now dead. So in that timeline, Bowser won basically.

Can't wait for May 15th. My ticket is already bought i'm so excited to go see the completionist legacy tour!

"Doki Doki Panic Attack" fucking got me

The way Nintendo remade Mario 1- 2- and3 for snes was great bringing it from 8-bit to 16-bit it's fun to go back and play each one and see the graphics difference.

Yeah they're amazing. I love it. They used the same graphical upgrade with the GBA re-releases of smb2 and smb3, except for smb1/LL that was released in the original artstyle for super mario deluxe on the GBC

Waved at the screen as soon as you did, Jirard. Also, in the original Famicom Disk System version of Lost Levels, you had to beat the regular worlds eight times before the game allowed you to go onto the four extra ones. Also, you had to beat the regular worlds without using warp pipes to unlock world 9; which gave you only one life to get through it. So if you want a hard mode of a hard mode, Jirard, I'd recommend playing through the FDS version of Super Mario Bros. 2/The Lost Levels.

And the reason Assassin's Creed Unity's spoken language isn't French, because "people outside France are too stupid to realize the differences in upper class and lower class French, well, why not give people a chance to?? After playing for a while I'm sure many people would notice subtle differences even though they wouldn't be sure what... Honestly, I think they actually were too lazy to research pre-revolution French themselves..!

The single worst part of The Lost Levels is the combination of trampolines and wind. I hated it so much! xD

Actually, this game wasn't released in the US because "It was too hard" for the US. It was because the video game industry was still recovering from the Video game crash. Nintendo upon releasing this to Japan realized that this game looked too similar to the original game basically meaning the game was stylistically OUTDATED by the time of release. So they gave us Doki Doki Panic with a Mario skin.

SMB2 from Japan wasn't released in America because Nintendo of America wanted a easier Mario game than SMB2(Japan)since it was difficult and wasn't easy for new players, and SMB2 from Japan looked too similar to SMB1, so Nintendo of Japan reskinned an older game that had the same development team, and so, Nintendo of Japan added upgrades to the game, like better animation to objects,to make it a, pretty much, better game and they showed it to Nintendo of America and Nintendo of America accepted it.(This is not me being mean, just wanted to type up a brief summary of what I remember from a Gaming Historian video, if some of these facts are considered wrong, I am sorry, whoever reads this, have a good day)

Funny enough, I first played the original NES Mario games from an older cousin at their house when I was a kid. Those who were lucky enough to own an NES and Super Mario Bros, they are the lucky ones. I was just lucky enough to be born in the 80s to have been there to experience it when it was first released, though due to my family being on the poorer side my parents didn't get me an NES and had to wait until I was a teenager before I got the N64 to own my own Nintendo console. GameBoy was one I owned when I became 10 and Donkey Kong Land 2 was one of my fav games from that time when I first got it. But most of my memories I had was going to my older cousin's house, my school friends house and even to a neighbour's house just to play Mario on the NES as well as on the SNES with the All Stars version.

You know who doesn't get kidnapped? Luigi. You know who always finishes the level on the first try when Mario fails too much? Luigi.
