A 4’…6’… then flat, progression follows the ancient grinders handbook. Based on the amount of work I have put in on some GoDallahs I think sometimes bringing the heel or toe into submission is required by lack of symmetry. Happy 4th🇺🇸

Another excellent description of coti honing! I definitely prefer using the dilucot method to transitioning from 8K, but I just don't have the patience. Especially as you get to final finishing, the coti _always_ seems to have more to give. The same is true with the Ark. With my ultra-slow stroke rate, the next time I do a video with either of these stones, I'll just cut from start to finish so that I don't worry about video length. Anyway, great work Eric! You inspired me to try and find a good translucent Ark.

I have really grown to love my translucent Ark. Don’t get me wrong, my Black is a fine stone, and we all know they produce such a comfortable edge. IMO, the feel while honing is just not as enjoyable as the Translucent. I would not trade either, and I do not think I use mine near enough.

Awesome video showcasing your coticule expertise Eric! The cool thing is different people could use the same stone and get different results or use different techniques and methods and still get a serviceable shaving edge. I like the way you hone on coticules but sometimes find myself like you said going a little higher on the synthetic progression and finishing on the coticule but I plan to learn both ways, it’s just fun when you have the time to sit down and hone on a natural even if it takes a little longer. I see it this way, with synthetics the destination is everything but with naturals it’s about the journey there. Have a good one my friend and great video like always!

Thanks Sean. At times I will go up to 8k-10k on synthetics or just refresh there and go back to a Coti. And it is just as good I guess, I just enjoy the dilution process. But I do feel that a Dilucot is faster than a synthetic progression. You will have that slow refinement at the end on clear or running water either way you go. The plus side is you can go thru a synthetic progression just repeating steps or method. It’s definitely mentally easier and less room for error with a good set of synthetics. You can sing with natural harmonics or you can embrace technology and use Auto tune. Nobody cares as long as you’re selling records. Happy 4th my friend.

Seeing how much came off that blade in the end was something else. I never seen that with the black when people honing on it.

I always wipe my blade with a paper towel after coming off my black and there is always some swarth as well. But as you can see, I stay on the stone a while. With the Trans you can see it well.

I am pretty sure one of Devan’s last videos where he honed on his Ark, he talked about it or did similar after getting off. I could be wrong.

@@BigEShaves it’s been a bit since I watched his channel. I’ve found another streamer who bought one of my razors. I hope the edge was ok. If not I’m sure he’ll rehone lol.

Thanks for sharing your experience Eric. This inspired me to play more with my Arkansas stone. I think i was not spending enough time on the last stone. I did something similar to what you did. Started with two convex coticules, and spent a considerable amount of time on the Arkansas stone. I had a really nice edge as a result. I keep wondering what effect the swarf has on the Arkansas stone. I get a nice hazy finish if i let the swarf build up, and use oil. Enjoy the summer weather. In Norway it's 12 deg C and rain:(

I have a Bout 7 and this Shapton 1.5 for shaped for my smallest wheel (4’ Ø ), not sure which I like more, I am still playing with it. The 5x3 (6.5’-8’ Ø) is doing the bulk of the work. Up until this point I have finished on flat stones and a long radius slates (US slate & La Lune) All have been keen and comfortable. But my Ark has tested the best off the stone. I did not shave with it, I stropped and packed it up and it’s on its way to Sean with a coticule for him to play with. I am anxious to see the result of this blind test. When I get back home, I plan on honing a razor up this way for myself. I am glad you mentioned swarth. It would be so easy just to give it a squirt of simple green and clear the surface, not sure why I didn’t think of that. I appreciate you bringing it to my attention.

Nice video Eric. After you use the convex stones - how many touch ups on flat stones do you think you can get before the bevel becomes flat again?

Your seeing my journey into super curve honing evolve on my channel, I have not been doing convex honing long. I am still very much in the testing and experimenting stage. I can share a few things. Convex honing has simplified some of my more aggravating gold dollar razors. It’s very easy to get comfortable edge. I have forgone the bevel set (correction) on flat stones on a few new out the pack with good success. I would not have believed that with my previous fights with the Chinese Razors. I have not noticed the typical fall off after 3-6 shaves like GD can do, so touch ups due to edge falling off have not started yet. I am now at the point that I plan to start honing some of my full hallow Solingen razors using super curve method. I will document that process. That’s a lot of words to tell you that really don’t know yet 😜. I am still tinkering and collecting data. Take care and thanks for watching and commenting.
