I first rode a Cub back in the sixties, loved it then riding in the summer. I'm too old and infirm now, but if I could still ride I'd buy one of these in a heartbeat, regardless of any other bikes I'd own.

@@yamkaw346 do it! It’s my Sunday morning rider. Absolutely no issues, 125 mpg, 60 mph, fuel injected. Honda has a gray one that looks good.

I got my C125 in 2019 after watching Leno putt around on one. Immediately searched SLC dealers & all had 50% deposit 3yr wait. I typed pre-order into my phone and Monarch Honda in Orem popped up. I called them and they had 2 on the floor. I had the bike late afternoon. I have ridden motorcycles for years and have to say the Super Cub is my all time favorite. To Hell with sport bikes! The Cub is a well behaved go anywhere transport. Mine is setup with side stand, luggage rack and Kijima saddlebag frames. Chase Harper saddlebags complete the package. I get 155mpg with 3700mi on it. Biggest service item is the chain. I bought a sprocket alignment tool which sets the rear wheel in perfect alignment. It was great riding before but even better with precise alignment.

The chain cover is easily removed with 4 screws and a 5mm allen key. Only the top need be removed for alignment but I take them both off for lubrication and inspection.

Thanks for a genuinely excellent review, and comparison! I've got to chime in, that I did actually cross shop the Grom and Super Cub. (Couldn't find a way to carry a passenger on the Monkey, so I didn't consider that one.) The Cub's full stainless exhaust, and enclosed chain ultimately won the day, but I think I would have been pleased with either. Cheers.

I've a Kawasaki "Ninja 400 ABS KRT" for "smiles/highway mile", and a Taiwanese-made (not ChinaCrap) Genuine "Buddy 50" scooter, for "quick trips to local stores for a small amount of shopping", which is a hoot to ride, and then there's my 77th birthday present to myself - a Honda Grom - which gives me" giggles galore on local roads". Truly a blast to enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nimble/agile like my Ninja!!!!!

I agree that both are fun! As a rider of 42 years with more having had more models of bikes than I can remember, I prefer my Super Cub over a Grom. Why? because I have a couple of motorcycles already. I don't need a mini motorcycle. The Super Cub is great for running errands around town when I don't feel like messing with the two larger bikes. I will say that it takes awhile to get used to that shifter on the Cub. You better be at a very low speed when you downshift, or you will squeal that back tire good (don't ask me how I know)! I think the Super Cub will still have a learning curve from anyone that is totally new to motorcycling, because you still need to get used to shifting. You still need to roll off and on the throttle as you do it. Also, if you are long time biker, the shift pattern is different than a regular motorcycle, so it takes some getting used to that, too! I find it fun and challenging to plan a longer trip on a Super Cub. You learn to travel lighter, and with a top speed around 60 (at my size/weight), you cannot do the highways so you get to see more of smaller towns and roads. Grom or Super Cub you cannot go wrong...and do not forget the Monkey, that is a hoot, too! In fact, I love the styling of that more than the Grom. Thanks for a great video!

Thanks for watching! I did have the rear wheel hop as I downshifted the first few times. My cameraman actually figured the foot clutch out (he had an old Honda that operated similarly) and that helped. As long as you're slow with the foot release it works just fine downshifting at any speed. Made riding it far better once we sorted that out! -Nate

I'm late to the party but I've spent years operating these centrifugal clutches. Rev match (blip the throttle on downshifts) and it's a non-issue.

As others have said, when the Cub came out, scooters had manual transmissions. Hand shift, hand clutch. Honda moved those from the hand to the foot. Also, the Cub has sold more units than all other motor vehicles, not just motorcycles.

Cool review, I think you're a bit hard on the Cub, to say it isn't fun... No way that bike isn't fun.

You can't say "100M units" w/o putting your pinky up to the corner of your mouth. Love the Grom (because of 28" inseam 😐). Love the BMW GS650F-low seat too. Sadly my life has grown out of both of these. I've have 30 miles to my work and can take back roads w/55mph limits, but the ppl here in SW OH don't give motorcycles the respect/space they need. Everyone in OH thinks they are nascar drivers in a nascar race and tailgate everywhere because your 5-15 over isn't fast enough.

I hear ya. I live in Chicago suburbs and the traffic flow is absurd most of the time. These little bikes are a tad dicey when their max speed with a tail wind barely matches the posted speed limit and everyone else is clearing that by 15-20! Thanks for watching! - Nate P.S. nice BRZ!

The Cub and similar motorcycles, also 2 stroke helped so many people, I think it is just as meaningfull als telephone or internet.

I'm saving up to buy on of these modern classics, either the meteor 350 of the supercub 125. To supplement my touring bike and sports bike.

I love that intro!

When it started years ago with I think a 50cc engine it had a double seat, as did the 75cc and the 90cc, so why now that it's a huge 125cc has it gone to a single seat, it spoils the look...

I like how you explain the clutch thingy in the pedal

Almost any scooter is still better the Italians were on top of it after ww2 Vespa is king but a Taiwanese genuine buddy 170i does the trick and a hooligan170i has at tires and 2 disc brakes

Thank you! Well, the fogging can be a problem, but this particular helmet (scorpion at950 i think) does a good job of ventilation and doesn't fog too badly. If I'm really hot my glasses get fogged first. Thanks for watching, Nate

I prefer the style of the Super Cub to the Grom, but that’s just my opinion. I’ve always been more drawn to classic looking vehicles and the Cub looks like something straight out of the 1950s.

I bought my first one in 1961, when I lived in Japan. But, it was not “long before they started making cars”. It was, though, a few years before they started selling cars in the U.S. Their cars at that time were chain drive, and illegal on American roads. The Honda 50cc (go ju, Japanese for 50) was a simple, rock solid bike. My new 2021 is a much more complicated assembly. Yeah, ad-libbing while riding is tricky. I think what I meant to convey is Honda brought their bikes to the U.S. well before they imported cars. I think many people who don't know bikes assume Honda began with cars and bikes were more of a secondary endeavor. Thanks for watching, and it is SO cool you had an early one in Japan. - Nate

This Super Cub owner would love to have a Grom or it's sibling, the Monkey. Now that I have a CT125, I may sell the C125 after this season and try to find a yellow Monkey to screw around on. I like the classic look more than the Grom but may settle for one if I have to. I miss having a manual clutch

Super Cub. Southeast Asia's main source of transportation for over 60 years!

It would have been nice if you added a vespa lx 150 into that mix as I really want an expert opinion on a compact and fun commuter that can filter thru the worst bumper to bumper traffic in an over crowded city, like NY. A lot of us in Asia, look for that mix of a fun, nimble commuter and mini bikes haven't really gotten any traction here unlike in the US or Europe. I hope you can make one.

Its a good idea! This comparison actually started purely as a Grom review, but when I picked up the Grom from the owner I contacted, I saw the SuperCub in the garage next to it. My brain started spinning and the opportunity to do a head to head with these similar yet opposite stablemates changed my plan at the last second. A scooter in a city would be really cool. The Super Cub really needs to have adjustable seats. I could really benefit from having a 31.5” seat height. Otherwise, it’s a good little bike. In the future, maybe Honda could make a 250 Super Cub and Trail 250.

How’s the Grom perform with the Cub’s wheels?

i'm looking at the trail 125 right now i have a friend she has the super cub and her 275 pound husband has the monkey. i love my harleys but i also love my scooters. my first was a jonway 250 that would hit 70 mph but it would take a mile to do it. and it was CHEAP built. i used solar panels to keep the battery charge witch was great during the day and when i parked i left it out in the sun a hour or so. then i found a 2009 honda silverwing. i said its a good price and it should run 75 mph. boy was i off a few mph. it would run at least138 mph. because it was turbo charged. heck i thought they all came that way. but now i have a 2012 honda silverwing it wont run but 114.7 and the computer shuts it off. but i love it. but now i'm looking for something fun to ride around here but yet if we want to we can cruise anywhere. i also have my first bike i every owned a 1973 honda CB 350 i also have a 1961 honda 305 auto. its not running and not sure it ever will. i think its just to far gone.

They are small motorcycle but reliable and very economy, i like them

I'm a huge Honda fan and have loved all my Honda's, but you said Honda reliability is second to none. Sadly Yamaha still takes the prize for the overall most reliable motorcycle brand and Honda comes in at #2. This is just a little, probably insignificant fact that has held for a while now. I've owned some 25-30 motorcycles and scooters and both my Yamaha's and Honda's have been pretty bullet-proof. Thanks for the review

More the point being that Hondas are generally trouble free and less a statement about them vs other brands. I've had both brands as well and they do seem to be more reliable than the rest!

I have friends that will constantly take groms on off-road trails because why not

Uh - no, can't agree with that one. But everyone looks gigantic Gromming it.

To be honest, it is overpriced, in my country it will cost around $2k top. But I guess different market, different prices.

The Super cub is way too underpowered.

The Honda Cub was not designed with the Europen markets in mind, but the Asian!

The clutch came from jawa...europe...honda bought a licence....

Completely fair? You have a Grom that is so suped up, it costs more than an expensive sport bike. How about comparing a stock Grom to a, lets say, suped up Hunter Cub?

Thanks for watching! I didn't have access to a stock one, but I dont rally think it would matter. They're wildly different experiences regardless of mods as I mentioned. I only compared them to see how different they could be with the same engine/price/etc and stock or modified they really appeal to two different buyers.

The Grom being recommended as a "beginner" bike is kinda like a snub nosed .38 revolver being recommended as "beginner" handgun. NO and dare I say NO! Ironically I recommend something BIGGER to start. A 4 inch barrel revolver for the gun, And something like the "Cub" or even a Rebel 250 for a "Newbie" bike.

I hope you've removed that headlight on the Grom. Hands down the worst headlight. I'd go as far to say it's dangerous to ride with it at night.
