    In the magazine article they had two drivers. Ones was Randy Pobst, the others was the "average joe." The average joe had a faster lap time around the track with the Mustang, than he did with the M3. So unless you are Randy Pobst, you most likely will be faster with a Mustang. As a 2012 GT owner I love my Mustang but if I had more money I would get the M3 simply for the refinement. There are not many "affordable - sub 60K" cars that I would be willing to trade up to other than an M3, 2015 Corvette, Caymen or an S5. All great cars

    I couldn't have said it better being a 2012 Mustang GT owner myself. But lately I've been getting so many compliments on my car (I did a few mod though) that I may not want to trade it for an M3. Nice thing about the stang is the aftermarket - for the price of an M3 you can turn your stang into something much nicer. Check out AmericanMuscle.com or summit racing.

    The M4 will be no match for the GT350. The GT350 has ran a lap on Nurburgring to rival a Porsche 911 GT3 in fact the GT350 was one second faster than the Porsche.

    +MyChannel3 Yeah exactly. The M4 is absolutely no match whatsoever to the GT350R and still only 2/3's the price. The 350R runs in the 1:30's at Laguna Seca while the M4 runs a 1:39. Thats nearly a ten second difference. Thats phenomenal! The next car to complete with the 350R would be 7.0 litre supercharged Z06 or a 250K European car. No argument here.

    M3 is a 2008. Ford took it apart and found cheaper parts to develop similar performance in 3 years. Spent less on Interior, Chassis, and Overall dynamics to offer a similar vehicle lacking the precision and balance of an M3. The GT is a great car for the money, but I guarantee that you put a faster lap time in an M3 for the average driver than the GT. The M3 exploits drivers confidence

    I'm a Mustang guy obviously as shown in my pic; I get the BMW guys point of view: They're paying for exclusivity and premium features. In most large towns, there's 5 or 6 Mustangs in every parking lot, but there is probably only one M3 in the entire area, and has great performance while also playing the luxury car role. Now the Mustangs guys say that for the price different between a 5.0 and an M3, we can customize/modify/enhance both the looks and performance of our cars to where it not only looks like none of the other Mustangs around, it will out perform almost anything on the road. I agree with both points. And it's really a silly debate because BMW guys are not going to consider a Mustang because they think it is beneath them, and Mustang guys have neither the budget nor the interest in a German car. Simple as that.

  • @goofyexponent

    So, both great cars. But lets look at the big picture. Cost of ownership. What does an M3 cost compared to an GT? What are average repair costs to an M3 vs a GT? What is the resale value of an M3 vs a GT? Which is going to cost more to insure? And an M3 vs a GT? Why not do am M3 vs a Boss 302? That would be an awesome comparison!

    The M4 will get it ass handed to it by the GT350. The GT350 is way faster than the M3, M4, M5 etc. The GT350 ran faster times at Nurburgring than a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, Audi R8 GT, Nissan GTR V-spec, RUF RT12, Porsche 911 turbo just to name a few. BMW does not even have a car that lapped the GT350 faster. The closest any BMW has gotten to the GT350 time is the M5 and it was 23 seconds slower.. FYI Ford states the GT350 will be priced some where between the 2014 Boss 302 and the GT500. So for a little more than $50K nothing for the money will touch the GT350.

    Baltahfeek The BMW's engine is great, no doubt, a 4 liter v8 that spins over 8k rpm. However... he 5.0 was also featured on Ward's best engines upon its debut in 2010, and if you look into the technology of the 5.0 (DOHC with cam torque actuated, twin independent variable camshaft timing) you'll find that it stands up against ANY mainstream EU or JAP design, makes more horsepower than the m3 while spinning less RPM, pulls with 95 ft-lbs more torque, and is also capable of over 26 mpg, but let's call it 26 mpg at regular highway speeds. The only automotive internal combustion engines that are more advanced would be a camless pneumatic valvetrain design, like what Koenigsegg has been developing....

  • @smilesic

    @smilesic

    10 жыл бұрын

    This was really insightful, where do you stack the 5.0 compared to the M156 (or m157?) C63's NA V8? even though its a 6.2L engine compared to the 4L and 5L from these guys. Just curious as you seem to know more than the average user on engines :)

  • @2013FiveOh

    @2013FiveOh

    10 жыл бұрын

    AMG no doubt has excellent engineers, but those engines lack the tunability/versatility of the 5.0/Boss 302. The AMG v8's are very very good, but a large portion of the actual performance of those vehicles can be attributed to the automated manual (flappy paddles) as you may know, many europeans don't like to modify their cars, but the 5.0 is perfect for modification. The engine is far more durable than the stock 420 hp rating would suggest, as Ford Racing offers supercharger packages that increase output to as much as 624hp with no other modification aside from what comes in the supercharger kit. There are no "user-unfriendly" drawbacks to this, however. Cam torque actuation allows for the engine to behave like an economy car when cruising, and a tame race engine within 0.2 seconds at any RPM when you put your foot down. People have also seen 600hp, all motor, no boost or nitrous, from camshaft and cylinder head modification on 5.0's.

    good comment. I have a 2012 5.0 and would choose it over a beemer any day. Can't beat the performance for the $$$. It's a v8 that redlines at 7000 rpms (more with a tuner) - pretty cool. Only drawback is that it really only gets 18mpg - also requires 8 quarts of oil. Anyways google about Ford MPG estimates and you'll find they lie. But I like the car so much the mileage doesn't bother me. I'm thankful I didn't buy the less powerful and over priced BMW 328...

    Remember to reset your fuel eco. I had a 2012 GT (MT82) with 3.31 rear gears and I remember seeing 26.4 to 26.6 mpg at 70 mph on thousand mile road trips from Texas to Florida and back. My 2013 has 3.73's and struggles for 25 mpg, gearing makes a huge difference.

    2013FiveOh I have a 2014 with the track pack,,,,,,,,those 3:73s come at a steep price to MPG......25MPG is a fantasy. My average overall with 2000 miles on the clock to date, has been 17MPG. On a 150mile road trip a couple of months ago I reset and managed 21MPG on the highway at speeds running approx 70MPH most of the way on "Cruise" and maybe 25 miles of two lane black top at 50MPH.........that's pretty far away from 25MPG.

    The M3 and the 5.0 are for two different people. Yes the 5.0 gets you more bang for your money and cheaper to maintain. It's like comparing a 5.0 and a Civic. The 5.0 is more expensive than the Civic. But if you put $5k on the civic it'll smoke a 5.0. But would you rather drive a civic or a 5.0? Would you rather drive a 5.0 or a M3? It's al personal preference. Both are amazing cars.

  • @mkelebay

I really appreciate his extremely in-depth description of each car's behavior. Rather than just tell us that the M3 is "more refined," he describes and illustrates what that means. Of the two, I'd rather have the Mustang b/c of the lower price and b/c BMW is in the 40th percentile for reliability here in the States.

Seems to me the heat extractors in the hood are just as worthy of mention as the Boss 302 radiator and such, since they serve a similar purpose, to keep heat down in their respective area, and weren't available for 11-12, and i've owned both, looked at both side by side, the 2013's roof is lower and you can feel the difference in aerodynamics at high speed.

    TheGeorgeLara Too expensive? It's $0 for 50,000 miles or 4 years from the first in-service date. So you think 5 years of maintenance the Ford is cheaper than 1 year of the Bimmer? I don't think so.

    Where's the info coming from? I don't recall a direct cylinder head or oil temp readout on the 2011-2012's, and my 2013 does have an accurate cylinder head temp readout, which stays around 205 degrees while cruising and dips down into the 190's in the mid range, but it still doesn't have an accurate oil temp readout, it just reads "low" "normal" or "high", so does the oil pressure, which is probably the only thing I dislike about the entire car.

    I had the opportunity to drive these back to back a couple of years ago, and all I can say is that the Mustang resonated with me more (I've had three previous generations in my ownership history, so it had a far more familiar feeling to me). That being said the M3 was an incredible experience, as the engine took a few minutes to get used to, kept shifting at 6000rpm, until I realized there was 2000rpm left! Both are amazing cars, and I would be very happy owning either.

    The 2011 - 2013 Brembo Brake Package cars all have GT500 LCA's. The suspension is exactly the same for the 11 - 13 for BBP cars: GT500 LCA's (which aren't that great), unique shocks and spring, unique UCA, and strut mounts (which are garbage). Motortrend also was using a BBP car for this test.

    The piston cooling jets were removed because they were causing windage/excess crankcase pressure, which makes it slightly harder for the crankshaft to turn and basically eliminates any cooling/lubrication advantage that Ford aimed for. Removing them allowed for slightly faster RPM capability, meaing better throttle response, especially after they made a few calibration changes. The cooling of the 5.0 is already badass either way. My 2013 runs cooler @ 4,000 RPM than it does @ 2,000 RPM.

    @Jimmy Sandison you can find some for around 20-25k w/around 30-50k on it. So it just depends on what you prefer to get. If i had 20k to put down, i would get the M3 hands down, but the sedan instead. And yes! I have been in both cars (but not the M3 coupe) and the quality of the M3 is what makes it a big difference from the mustang. In my opinion, the one thing that the mustang has over the M3 is that heavenly sound it makes.

    tracyis300 Why do you feel the quality of the M3 is better? Mechanically, both of the Coyote 5.0's i've owned have been beaten, repeatedly, and taken it in stride. The engine can see 500 horsepower with the basic bolt-ons and tuning, the MT82 (which recieved alot of whining for its "notchiness") I find to be a great transmission (especially the linkage), and obviously the live rear axle can handle all the drag strip launches you can throw at it. Probably the most durable performance car i've ever owned.

    This 2011 GT wasn't hookin out of the hole like the 1968 GT 500 that I test drove in my video run....seems like they could engineer out some of that wheel hop, maybe it's a sacrifice for havin the big performance tires.....I'm sure it's a fun car to accelerate in, but, not nearly as fun to drive or as enjoyable to look at goin down the road as this 68 GT 500, in my humble opinion! Thanks for the video comparison.

    My car, an 07 mustang gt, has all the comfort options I would ever want and if you do a comparison on each car's features they both pretty much get the same things. The interior might be a little better, but it's the ride that matters. All this goes into the chassis and those intangible items are probably the extra composite technologies used to help it handle while maintaining a luxurious ride. Without them, I imagine the bmw would be far less popular and much slower around a track.

    @TheAlienAssassin As someone who owns an e24 M6, i can tell you that newer bmws do keep their value, but for a classic bmw to keep value, it needs to be absolutely pristine. The only classics you see going over $20,000, for example, are the early M3s with less than 30,000 miles. 60s mustang fastbacks go for over twice that all the time.

    I'm not just talking about the brembo package, i'm talking about the 2013, and how its better in almost every way than the 2011-2012, and how these changes have affected their performance vs. the m3. Better aerodynamics, heat vents to help keep the temp in the engine bay down, and you might not be able to really feel the "8 hp" up top, but I feel a pretty big difference in throttle response compared to my previous 5.0, they definately recalibrated.

    I just came from a 2007 350z which of course has independent rear suspension. I bought a 2013 Mustang GT. They handle very similarly. I would never have believed how well you could make a car with a live rear axle handle until I drove it. Now imagine the Boss 302, which shits all over the M3 on the track. All that with a wagon axle. I guess it's time to rethink this subject.

    @torogami2 What "technoology"? The M3 has more adjustments to fool with but does any of it make it faster??? What you think is 'adding' performance is actually limiting it until you're ready to use it. I mean for safety reasons I guess? More likely to insure you'll be back to the service dept when it goes astray. BTW the M3's obsolete DVD-ROM Nav takes forever to search & lacks a user friendly touch screen.

    I ask myself which year-model you owned. Ride and seat comfort is way better in my '12 GT/CS than in my friends '11 E92 M3. Especially on long trips. The stereo? 500 watts and the quality is way enough for me. Interior materials in the GT? They're more than okay (maybe not as good as in the M3). I live in the Swiss Alps and I drove both the M3 and the GT over Alpine passes - the M3 is that stiff than it can be a real diva on bumpy roads. The GT is just a little softer, which makes it much safer.
