I'd just like to take this opportunity to share a really sad story about JRR Tolkien. So in the Silmarillion, which is like the Bible of Middle Earth, there's a man named Beren who is wandering around one day when he hears the most beautiful singing he's ever heard. He follows it and sees a beautiful Elf woman named Luthien. Long story short, they fall in love, form a kick ass team and fight Sauron (back when he was a shapeshifting necromancer. I swear this is true.) They drive off Sauron but Beren is mortally wounded and dies. Luthien is heartbroken so she goes to the Valar (a pantheon of gods who rule middle earth) and begs Mandos, the god of death, to release Beren' soul. Now Mandos is under strict orders from God-with-a-capital-G to keep all dead humans in his hall until God calls for them, and Mandos doesn't even know where the souls go after that. Mandos is also said to be the coldest and most stoic of the Valar. But when Luthien sings of her love for Beren, he weeps and begs God to intercede. God lets Beren come back to life provided he and Luthien never leave heaven to go back to Middle Earth to come back to life all the way. So anyway, Tolkien near the end of his life (and after his wife's death) wrote a letter to his son in which he revealed that his wife was his inspiration for Luthien. He said that when he was in the army, he and his wife would take long walks in the woods, and that "her skin was clear, her hair shone, and here eyes were as bright as you've ever seen them, and she could sing and dance. But now the path has gone crooked, and I am left, and I cannot plead before the inexorable Mandos." Tolkien and his wife Edith share a gravestone. On his marker is written "Beren", and on hers, "Luthien".

This is going to veer wildly off-topic, I'm afraid, but I'd like to get it out here, if you don't mind: The whole Valar thing is my biggest issue with Tolkien's universe. When a god can hypothetically prevent really bad things from happening, like Sauron destroying Middle Earth for... reasons I can't remember. Is there a good explanation, or is it some brushed-off apologist nonsense _a la_ "God works in mysterious ways"? Then the elves feel over-powered compared to other races and like they get to live forever and be the best at most things, but don't help out other races a lot. I never got the appeal, or why Tolkien liked to use them in this way so often. That's why out of any of Tolkien's stories I like "The Hobbit" the most. It feels the least bogged down in mysticism. (Though I'm still not sure how to feel about Thorin, Kili, and Fili all dying at the end, as it feels like a convenient "hubris based justice" type of ending that doesn't usually happen in a world without gods.)

+Master Markus Well, if o remember correctly, the reason why the elves are overpowered yet do nothing is that they, like the dwarves, are attuned to the song of the world, and have to follow it's flow. Humans are short lived, but are completely free. Elves are perfect, yet cursed to never accomplish anything significant or get anything done.

I could get that with elves, (though it seems like a dumb creative choice for sentient, free-moving beings) but the dwarves seemed to be their own people to me. "Elves are perfect, yet cursed to never accomplish anything significant or get anything done."? The gods of Middle Earth were a bunch of assholes! Again, another problem with having totally legitimate creator gods in your world - they are either totally don't care about their creations, or they just think "No, you have to suffer. You can't be perfect. Why? Because I said so." or "Yeah, I could give you free will, but... nah. That's no fun for _me_."

Master Markus Tolkien was a Catholic and thus you can certainly find some hints of apologism in his work. Remember, the Valar are a secondary pantheon serving God (or Eru) and they are imperfect, not in the sense that they murder and rape like the Greco/Roman pantheon, but that they are not all knowing or all powerful. Even they question Eru's will sometimes. However, Eru is like the christian god in that he has planned for everything beforehand, and nothing bad happens that he is unable to stop-although sometimes he does intervene directly, like in the attempted Numenor invasion of Valinor, (not sure how familiar you are with Tolkien lore, basically the strongest kingdom of men tries attack the garden of Eden.) But yes, in the end, the Problem of Evil still exists in the Tolkien universe. As for the elves, they're kind of explicitly stated to be the most powerful of all races, but they tend to (somewhat understandably) become really prideful as a result. The elves were considered to be OP by Tolkien so he patched them so that their inevitable fate is to kind of dwindle after Sauron is destroyed and magic begins to leave middle earth (this is why all the elves are "leaving" in LotR-to avoid a slow decline that they know is coming.) Contrary to what Nito said, Elves are responsible for shaping most of the history of middle earth, but their pride and bitterness over not being God's favorites (Eru clearly loves Men more) are their fatal flaws. The dwarves actually started out as a race of automatons created by the Valar of smithing, but that's another story.

Master Markus ...and I also completely forgot to address your original question. In fact, there is a half decent explanation given as to why Eru just doesnt nuke Mordor from orbit, and it's basically that Eru is laissez-faire and wants to intervene as little as possible, so that the races of middle earth learn to cooperate and fight together. The whole point of lotr is that some jolly hobbit and his gardener are the key players in some huge war, not a great man or elf or godlike being. You could uncharitably view this as the Christian doctrine of necessary suffering simply by another name, but there could definitely be worse explanations.

"Suffer me now!" Never has a version of a game described itself so well.

Years later, this still brings me great joy.

Interesting choice to make a stop-motion styled game.

The framerate and the cape physics combine to create the ultimate nostalgia for the PS3 version of Dragon's Dogma. Thank god that game has a PC version now.

despite the crap framerate (on a 5 year old xbox 360 that surprisingly never broke), I really liked enjoyed the slow as shit game and even went on to completing it. Granted I didn't care about specs to enjoy a game (like any individual in their right mind should(not that thinking about specs are bad)), and I did experience the nemesis feature and had a douchebag archer hunt my arse like bane to tearofgrace (the funniest damn channel I've found to date. well, other than scatsbury)... really the developers deserve some hate for allowing this now that i think about it. Should have marked down the price at least. But then there's that whole thing with the work it took to make the thing in the first place... eh.

I prefer Arkham City to asylum since it feels like a better Batman experience.

Asylum all the way, City made you feel like Batman but the fact that Asylum feels like a horror game even though you're playing one of the most badass superhero ever is something else. I'm Batman! I shouldn't be tensing up as I enter this morgue and yet I am! Also, Asylum feels way more replayable and has a tight story and the Riddler puzzles are not jarringly impossible and annoying to collect.

I'm currently playing them all through in chronological order and honestly Asylum doesn't hold up as well as I'd hoped. It just feels so... limited. All of them are great games on their own though, although you can tell that Origins is made by different people. City feels oddly short compared to what I remember. Really looking forward to Knight though- I'm one of the lucky ones who didn't have any problems running it on PC and it's fantastic. It's odd that games which are so similar can result in such differing opinions among the fans as to which is best. I suppose that just means that the series is really successful.

As well as Return of the King. FUCK the Multiplayer though, still haven't beaten the Black Gate. Incase you don't know, in Multiplayer, you're given extra lives, but have no checkpoints. Which means in Black Gate, you have to fight a boss at the begining, and five or six waves of enemies, WHILE PROTECTING PEOPLE AS WELL!

Love this game. Bought this on Steam a while back and love the combat and the enemy leveling system. This is also a great stress reliever after a hard day at work.

I love the escapists comment how it's almost easier to become attached to an Orc captain on his rise to the top versus associating with your main character. I will say the most glorious encounter I had with a captain happened on the PS3. Upon clashing the captain stared at me for a solid 10 seconds with swords locked before breaking out in laughter. He never actually said anything, just cackled away and then we fought!

I've actually been playing Shadow of Mordor on PS4 lately, and I've re watched the Machinima episode several times wishing you'd do another video on the game, It's like you guys read my mind.

Just like them and this game, it's unlike me to return to a channel, but this is a very special case.

This retroactively counts as 2nd gig.

oh man were those PS2 games awesome. I played Return of the King so much that I maxed out everyone's levels, unlocked everything, knew where all the sequence breaks were, and all these glitches. It was amazing.

I don't even think they are the same situation. KI-360 looked totally playable, didn't look superbly different than its sibling, and ran at 60FPS from the released prototype footage I saw.

omg, a Green Greens intro! I've missed that theme so much.

The sound in the end is the sound that plays when you enter the wraith world. Thank goodness the 360 version of this game was bearable...

As a Tolkien casual myself, I have to agree with Matt. It feels like Gondor is always only neutral at best, and has a tendency to go to shit, but then so does like... every kingdom not run by elves.

this performance remidns me of times when I had 550 ti and tryed to play 2014-15 games

Third Age was great until you got to the final boss *Spoiler Alert* It's the eye of Sauron and it's not even hard, it just takes an hour to wear down his health points.

Playing ff12 right now, legitimately looks and plays better than this game.

Mitchell Boeck I see. It's just I waited these past couple of years to replay 12 because I knew they would announce an HD version sooner or later, and I'dve felt a little foolish if there was one on Ps3 the whole time. Now to wait even longer to see if it comes to PC :/
