Sunset Photography At Ogwen Falls, Eryri

In this landscape photography video I visit the Ogwen Falls in Snowdonia at sunset. I wasn't that confident of getting particularly good light for photographs. I had chosen this location because if the light was poor then the waterfalls would hopefully give me some alternative landscape compositions to work with. So I take the opportunity to explain how I set up my camera to expose for moving water.
As it happened, the light turned out to be excellent and the mountains made for fine subjects for my photographs. So my shots were at much wider focal lengths than I had I bargained for at the outset.
I reminded myself of a couple of very valuable landscape photography lessons on this shoot. 1: It's definitely helps to be adaptable be prepared to change your plans if necessary, to take advantage of changing circumstances on location. And, 2: Working with the same composition across across varying light conditions can make for very different images.
It turned out to be a very enjoyable landscape photography shoot in the mountains and in addition to taking photos of the waterfalls, I also covered a spot of history with a short piece on the road bridge constructed by Thomas Telford in the early 19th century.

    2:23 It's one of the things I'm proudest of, being a Brit - the creations of Telford, Brindley, the Stephensons, Brunel and the other leading figures of Britain's golden age of civil engineering. That bridge you're at still looks fantastic, and of course the Menai Bridge is brilliant, too. My dad's favourite bridge! I'm watching this vid because I'm hoping to get a shot of Mount Fuji as the sun goes down, tonight, so when this came up in my feed, I clicked immediately. Your sunset shots and golden hour shots here have given me a lot of inspiration. Cheers!

    My favourite spot ( always annoyed me to find a van from staffordshire in my parking spot on the right.) I was at the bottom one winter when the heavens opened with freezing rain. It was so cold and wet i crawled into the sheep hut, with its tiny opening. Luckily no creatures inside. Another cracking video.

As a new photographer (at age 69 no less) I am hungry for learning; and I am also new to the Olympus system. These presentations are just the ticket for me. I learn so much from them. Your presentation style and explanations are wonderful and of great use to me in my quest to become a better photographer. For this particular video I am curious as to what lenses you were using for the various shots. I have my guesses, but any comments you have on them would be very welcome to me. Thank you so much!

    Loved your video. Hope to visit this summer. One question, how accessible and how much scrambling is involved on that higher section you were photographing? It's six years since I used to walk among the Welsh 3000s peaks, before sciatica put an end to steep yomps. I have done some lesser scrambles along Crib Goch and when ascending Glyder Fawr, so I know how to make sure that I'm safe.

    Another entertaining and informative film and I do like the fact you use the Welsh names of places and not just English ones. Not to get too political (but I guess I might) there's too much of this angliciseation and name changing going on at the moment. Keep up the good work.

  • @DGriffGallery

    To my eternal shame Gareth, my Welsh is relatively poor - when I grew up in Llandrindod Wells in the 70s the area was heavily anglicised and I wasn't allowed to learn Welsh in school because they claimed I was doing too much science and maths to "fit it in". But I do think it's important that people from around the world that tune in to my channel understand that these locations are as much about culture and heritage as geology and biology! Many thanks for your support - I really appreciate it 😀👍

    Amazing shots again David, how do you think they compare for clarity with your previous set-up. Is there any trade-off for portability?

  • @DGriffGallery

    @DGriffGallery

    5 жыл бұрын

    Good question William. I think that because I was able to invest in Pro glass they're much better than before even when I had a larger sensor. This set-up really does demonstrate the old adage that you should spend as much as possible on glass. I can see that photographers with less experience may be disappointed with image quality in terms of noise, as you need to take more care regarding exposure. Deep shadows are terrible when pulled up from an M4/3 sensor. But apart from that issue, which is very easily managed using a ETTR approach, I'm very pleased and certainly haven't felt even slightly that the portability improvement has been a costly compromise! 😀👍

  • @DGriffGallery

    @DGriffGallery

    Жыл бұрын

    Hello John, no it's not sign posted, but is easy to find. If you park up at Ogwen cottage you will see an access point through the roadside wall which leads you to a rocky area alongside the top end of the falls. And you will see that there is a path which leads under the bridge. Bear in mind it's very narrow and extreme caution is required as it would be easy to slip into the river. You can also access the bottom area of the falls, by following the single track road out from the parking area down towards Nant Ffrancon. This track leads long the opposite side of the valley from the A5. A couple of hundred yards along you can walk off the track down across the grassy area to the foot of the falls. Hope this is helpful. 😊👍

    Hi Ken - that's a really good question. And easily answered - since my camera gear is much easier to lug I'm more mobile and have been out and about in the mountains much more than on the coast close to home. And I rarely head anywhere isolated - I was by myself here even close to the road - without some mountain essentials. Now the entirety of my photo and vlogging gear (main camera and 3 video cams all fit in the grey sling bag - only 10litres). But the back pack is essential in the mountains and in this case was half-empty! But I had some rain gear (showers were forecast), a down jacket as it gets cold fast in the evenings at this time of year, food, drink, and ALWAYS a few bits and pieces of emergency gear in case I sprain an ankle or some such injury which means I have to wait for rescue. Even alongside the main road nobody would know I was there if I was immobile down in the valley, and I'd be able to set up a temporary shelter, heat water and cook food and keep warm and dry for, in the worst case, an overnighter. People have died from hypothermia very quickly in spots like this with minor injuries which render them immobile - that's 50 years of hill-walking experience for you! 😀👍
