Such an good idea to show the European version as they take the script and add ideas (that last one with Norma covered in blood), I felt that the Colorado one try something different and i like it just because a show has been done one way doesn't mean you have to clone it to death.

Thank you so much!! The finale is my favourite scene in the whole musical, so it's good to see different versions

I am LOVING that last one covered in blood. The strange soprano opera chick, however, was... odd.

The way that production staged the final moments is a direct allusion to the traditional staging of the opera Salome. It may seem to come out of nowhere to the casual viewer, but for those familiar with opera it was a payoff that the whole production had been inevitably building to.

totally with you on Marcia, it's just an odd choice for a part that is usually a belter. Also, I know there's some reference to the opera Salome, but unless you were privvy to that info, or were a fan of opera no one would get the reference. that version just looks goofy and definitely an odd choice for Norma. Also, her face and the crowd of policemen made it look like it was a spoof on SB instead of a serious drama. Anyway, it's neat to see all the different versions with blood, headdresses, belting, mixing, stars, super stars and all of the foreign versions down to the last note etc.

Wow - nice compilation of Norma... Thank you. But the last one (April Hailer)? - I'm sorry - i dont like this verison. It sounds more to me like a big mistake than a big Final. Here in Germany, the Role of Norma Desmond was interpreted first by the great Helen Schneider. She has done the Show in the 90s at the Rhein-Main-Theater / Niedernhausen. (The Theater was only build for this Show, costs about 25 Millions at this time.) She was so unbelievable greatfull and - for me - i think, it was / is the role of her life. You can find some vids of her as Norma Desmond here on youtube.

So interesting and ( wishful) that the last note in the German version is an open "ahhh" wowel, rather than the difficult "EEEE" vowel...

Ummm... Pia Douwes in Dortmund wasn't part of the Dutch tour. The Dutch tour ended in 2010. This was a separate regional German production and sung in German. :)

Ver Patti Lupone o Glenn Close

The full strength of the choice might not be evident out of context. That production chose to cast an operatic mezzo-soprano as Norma and surround her with a cast of young contemporary-Broadway-style performers. It worked beautifully and highlighted Norma's status as clinging to dated (though possibly/probably superior) aesthetics in Hollywood while the rest of the industry had moved on to fashions she did not fit in with. Given that context of using opera to comment on Norma's situation, for the show to end with a sudden soprano note and the authorities surrounding her directly references the traditional staging of Strauss' operatic version of "Salome."

Ugh! Almost all of these performances has turned Norma into a sad, over acting drag Queen. That was not the intent of Patti LuPone in the original London version. Unfortunately, I feel, that’s what people were looking for because over the years Norma had been portrayed this way by comedians and drag queens and that’s what they were use to. That’s what Glenn Close gave them and people loved it. Sacrificing a great singing voice for camp acting. No, thank you.
