Sunnysky x2220 980kv v3 • Looking for Efficiency • [The Judge Ep. 15]

Ғылым және технология

The Sunnysky x2220 980kv is my choice for the Mini Talon. Efficiency is the name of the game in this setup.

This is an excellent and methodical approach to defining upfront what your objectives are, and validating those objectives with independent testing. The spreadsheet at the end makes it very easy to see the comparisons, and I like the way you mentioned your flight considerations in making your prop recommendations. Excellent analysis here John.....fantastic ROI for anyone considering becoming a Patreon supporter for your channel. Thanks!

Wow, you make shopping very easy. Thank you. Would you happen to have a video that explains the calculations? It`d be nice to calculate using different components added in.

I don't have a standalone video explaining the calculations, but they're pretty simple: Thrust / Watts is Efficiency. The idea here is how much juice does it take to make a gram of thrust. Higher is better. Power (thrust) / Weight (of plane) = Power to Weight Ratio. Bigger is better. For strong aerobatics I like 1.75:1 or better. Cruisers ~ 1.25:1, Sport Planes ~ 1.5:1. $/Watt is how much money it costs per watt. Lower is better.

Thank you, that was a very interesting testing! One suggestion - maybe in parallel with existing tests, there could be added value to run fixed watt test using different props. For instance, in this test it would be really interesting to see Efficiency numbers for different props with fixed wattage ~410. Because usually when we have higher wattage (at peaks) - we get less efficiency, so I wonder if APC 10x5 would actually beat 9x4.5 when working on the same 410 watts :)

Do you know about ecalc? They keep provide that type of data.

  • @markhonman4903
    @markhonman49032 жыл бұрын

Interesting measurements, but they are all static thrust. That would make sense for aerobatics but if you are looking for cruise endurance it is likely the coarser-pitch and smaller diameter prop (say 9x6 in this case) that will do the job for you. If you're using ecalc it produces a table of what I assume are steady-state speeds vs. current draw. Now if you had 2 thrust testers you could fake up a wind tunnel - with a big motor creating a movement of air at your planned cruise speed, and the other "downwind", used to test the candidate motor/prop combo "in the air".

In my experience flying with flight computers and data loggers, the difference in static/dynamic is rarely above 10%. In any event, since all my tests are static, the data is relative.

Hey I'm really impressed with your work on those sunnysky motors, as I was watching your video I was wondering what those numbers would be if you used a wooden prop, have you ever done so with a wooden prop? Thanks Michael

  • @RCVideoReviews

I love wooden props and that might be an option very soon. I don’t really think about wooden props on the mini because it’s not too hard to chip props landing these.

I'm running this same motor on my mini talon, I ended up using a 9x7 aeronaut folding prop. Did you do some testing in the air? and are you still using a 10x5 prop? If you're goal is maximum distance, so more distant per mah you maybe ending up using a different prop then you're goal would be to fly as long as possible.

I do still have that motor on the plane, but I shelved the plane for the time being for other projects. I haven't done in flight efficiency testing, but generally larger diameter props yield higher efficiency. What did you find out?

  • @RCVideoReviews

It's derived from Kv and voltage. I think Kv is off on this meter so I don't place too much stock in the RPM value.

I’m planning to use this motor on AR Wing PRO on a 6S setup and stock 8x6 prop . And maybe for extra speed I may try 8x7. Do you think it’s going to work? Thanks for the test!

Yikes…6s might be a bit much for this motor. I would advise putting it on a watt meter to check. I don’t think they intended for this one to spin quite that fast.

@@RCVideoReviews thanks but i have neither of them unfortunately... I need to buy the motor and can only relay on whatever eCalc says and hopefully it’s nit far off. The only warning on my configuration is “electric Power: 728.3 W > Limit (up to 15s): 640 W) so that’s 90 watts over the limit if i’d go full throttle which I don’t intended to do often.
