On the 1619 ducaton you can see a small hand symbol between the date. That means it was minted in Antwerp.

They have them out there. Just be careful from who you buy from.

These really are neat. The most amazing finds are always the gold. Since gold doesn't corrode in the salt water the coins come up looking as nice as they did when the ships sunk!

I love the history behind these coins. They also have the most wonderful designs.

PCGS or NGC: Altered Surfaces, Environmental Damage! That Albert coin was almost 100 years old when it went down!

Those are interesting, though being raw, how do you know for sure it came from the ship someone else says it did? For instance, if you sent one of them in to NGC stating on the form that it came from the Atocha, are they going to take your word for it? Or would the label state "possible shipwreck coin," or would it come back as a low-grade 8 Reales with environmental damage? If anyone has ever tried sending one in raw with no certification, I'd love to know what the result was.

Hello Ben! Great video on some cool shipwreck coins. This one spurred my memory of talking to you a while back ...2 years or so ago about getting 2 shipwreck coins from the 1654 wreck of the La Capitana (Jesus Maria de la Limpia Concepcion) of the coast of Ecuador graded and certified as genuine from the wreck. I have paperwork and the COA for these and was wondering if you would like to try again. I remember we had talked about getting these NGC shipwrecked genuine but sadly your man at NGC did not answer your concerns during the height of Covid... so do you want to try again? I really liked the Dutch coins. I have an 8 realest from circa 1620 Philip III minted in Mexico. Also a pillar dollar dated 1737 and a portrait dollar dated 1800. None of these are "ship wreck coins". I have tried to obtain an Atocha coin but they are held too close to the best and the prices are terribly inflated in my opinion. All three of these are 8 reales coins. How did you get your Atocha if you don't mind me asking? My pillar dollar looks a lot like the one in the Intro of the Red Book. Thanks Ben!
