Sundown Towns: Vidor, Texas works to restore reputation from being racist

For many years, Vidor, Texas was a place where Black travelers did not want to be caught after the sun went down. Now, the town is hoping to clean up its racist reputation.

Some live here actually. Im from Beaumont, but have lived in Vidor 16 years. I dispise this stigma out here. But worse I truly dispise the actions of ignorant hateful people that caused it. And I really HOPE for it to change. I've seen more kids here than ever support equality regardless if their elders do or don't. Thats the generations that will really shift the change. If people live their life eith that kinda hate in their heart, its their own souls they ended up hating all along. Because everything and everyone is connected more than most peopke know, you hate another, you hate yourself. Love will prevail ultimately. And I will always support that, equality, any opportunity presenting itself.

I remember a black family tried to move to Vidor, TX, in the early 2000s. The husband had gotten a job in the Houston area. However, the housing at the time was coming off the Hurricane Katrina situation." "To say they had to deal with racists and racism would be an understatement. The family's suv had its tires slashed and had "N I G ***" plastered on the windshields of the family SUV." "His work truck was stolen, and the family house randomly had it's windows busted out while they were at work and school. His truck was later found on a back road on blocks." The family went from being interviewed on the news about moving to Vidor, TX, to moving completely out of Texas." " I was a sophomore in high school when this happened. I remember it vividly. Especially coming off the James Bird Jasper, TX, dragging death in 1998, I believe."

I remember in High School, when I ran track, we had track meets, and Vidor was there; we would sit next to Vidor sometimes on the bleachers; the Vidor students were some of the coolest kids at the track meets. I'm not trying to find out if it's changed or not. For all I know the towns finding out minority people money spends the same as Caucasian and that money is drying up. Everywhere you go you'll find racist but it was a different type of racism down there. Beware of your surroundings even in those small towns around orange county. The jasper incident happened a few years before I moved to east Texas but was always told to carry when out at night in any part between I10 Louisiana Stateline to Beaumont. Stay safe folks

Let someone else experiment with their life and see just how welcoming Vidor is. I'll go where people are evolved and aren't obsessed with a physical characteristic that I didn't ask for nor can change.

Complete Bull shite. I grew up in Beaumont in the 70's and 80's, fifteen minutes from Vidor. My mother moved there 10 years ago after my father ran off because that was the only place she could afford to move to since the tax rate was so low and housing prices were still reasonable and still be somewhat close to her job. There are black people working at the Taco Bell, Sonic, convenience stores, pharmacy, etc. and YES they are working at night time. Nobody is trying to k .ill black people in Vidor in the present day. The racist crap absolutely DID exist as far back as fifty to 60 years ago. Most of the racist people have died off. The times and attitudes changed a minimum of over 20 years ago. Stop allowing the past and other people's attitudes to define who you are and how you feel about yourself and your community. If your always looking in the rear view mirror, you cannot move into the future. Stop living in the past, stop allowing other people to move out of the past and better themselves and move forward so you and the nation can try to heal.

I had an interesting experience in vidor ,Tx… about 20 years ago I was moving from Ft .Bragg( now FT Liberty) to San Antonio ,Tx. I was changing duty stations in the Army. I’ve never been out of the Carolinas on my own as an adult.I was traveling in my pickup truck towing a small U-Haul trailer… just crossed the border of LA and Tx, a few miles in I caught a flat tire in Vidor. As a young black man I didn’t know anything about this town . I literally stopped on the bridge and walked across to an auto shop. They were open and not busy. I asked if there was anyone available to help me change a tire. I had no tools , and my jack wouldn’t work because I had larger rims on my truck. The guy said he could not help me because they were busy. NO ONE IS IN THE SHOP! I didn’t think anything of it, so I asked if I could just pay to use some tools. I was literally walking distance from their shop and you could see my flat tire. He said no they don’t loan tools out🤷🏾. Still not thinking anything of it, I walked a few miles to the auto parts store to buy some tools. I was able to buy a set of sockets but was unable to buy a jack. Ironically they were sold out.At the time I was a young soldier in the Army and knew nothing about an emergency fund or AAA lol. So I made it back to the truck and of course couldn’t change the tire. I didn’t have enough sense to call my insurance company to get help. So I walked back to the auto shop and asked could they call me tow truck. Still wondering why I couldn’t get help there, guy finally calls a tow truck. Tow truck comes , literally takes me to the next exit…… puts my tire on… charges me $200! WTF 😮 Thankfully I had a credit card 🙏🏾So I make it to San Antonio and a year later I was telling this story to my wife’s Godfather. And that’s when I got the history of Vidor. 😮 lucky for me I broke down in the morning, Lord knows what would have happened at night. Never knew of places like this until that day and started doing my own research. I still till this day will not stop nowhere near Vidor. Good luck changing the perception of that city. I have seen stories online recently from truck drivers delivering there… they get loaded/unloaded quickly to let them get out before it gets dark….Like others are saying, Vidor needs money in their city! So now we’re welcome to go/stop there 💰 💰💰😏. I just thank God I made it out safe 🙏🏾

@HollyGraham-wl6ye it's called taking heed to the warning. NO ONE is interested in experiencing racism first hand so if word and reputation gets around true or not you'll typically avoid.

I actually stopped there in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina and I was creep out as we needed gas . My then fiance was questioned about who were and what's our business there. Once they heard he was service member they were nicer. I thought It was the whole Katrina refugee thing but talking about it with family, we were informed about how lucky we were. Later we were stationed in the Texas and that CO told us not to wear uniforms while traveling in that area. I trust the DOD before someone who is just trolling.

If you are black walk into one of their bars at 10pm-midnight for a drink and let us know how friendly those people are🤠

My thing is if that town is that famous for having that reputation that they have to go on a news story to prove to people they’re not what people think they are, that’s a really bad place to be and I really don’t know what’s worse. Let’s see how they vote and what their actions really are. Till then I see them eyes and I’m not convinced. 👀
