Hi I’m one of the directors, the lore is actually a little different than the WI dside lore, lemmie paste it here: Current day Oswald wakes up one day only to find himself in an unfamiliar environment. He notices the world devoid of any color aside from various tones of black and white. He resides in an old worn out cabin, with a bed, his banjo, a revolver on a table beside his bed, and a basic kitchen with a few shelves, silverware, pots and pans (This is to describe the place in the cutscenes more clearly). The outside of his cabin is barren, just a field with a fence, some lamp posts, and a forest in the distance. There were no animals, he was alone. The memories of his past before arriving at this place haunted him. He could never forget the blue sky, his friends, his lover Ortensia, and all the fun they had together. He would have dreams about meeting them again, but it would always cut short at the happiest moments. After some time, Oswald realizes that there is no escape. He can't age, he can't forget most of his entire life, and worst of all he can't escape this place he was dragged into. Suddenly his world starts to shift where it previously stayed static and unchanged. His dreams were all drowned in a pinkish tint, and he was forgetting what any color besides that one looked like. He started hearing whispers in the distance. Were they from the forest? Are they out in the field? Many times he tried to look for this person whispering to him to have anyone to talk to, but to no avail. There was no one there besides him.. right? After a while, Oswald simply assumed he was hallucinating these things because of his deprived communication to anyone, and tried to brush them off as best he could. After... how long has it been? Days? Months? Years? He had stopped counting a long time ago... he came to find an escape to his new world, a way to free himself from this mental torment. He grabbed the surprisingly loaded revolver beside his bed and walked outside for what was his last time, and enacted his plan. Walking down the field, he started to reminisce about his life, remembering his old friends and his lost love, his colorful world... when suddenly, he started hearing the whispers again, but this time, they were telling him to die, getting louder and louder. His heart started beating faster, his palms sweatier, his vision was starting to blur and turn pink, quicker pace, faster heart, voices screeching until- he found someone. It was a little boy, who seemed very confused about how he came to arrive there. Oswald, with this surprise, calmed himself down. Shocked that, after so long, he finally had someone to communicate with, he held off his plan to have a little talk with him before resuming it, but, starting the conversation, the boy asked him about his worried look as he was walking toward him, and he once again was drowned in sadness. The boy asked him to sing a song to try and cheer him up, and, while he knew it wouldn't prevent him from continuing his escape, he thought he would try to cheer himself up before that. And it began.

I've always thought (in the original) the reason why he didn't die is because (since he's the lucky rabbit)he was too lucky and the bullet didn't kill him, instead, passing straight through him and (I think) hitting the unnerved part of brain matter
