Sunday Jam #32 : MIDISID and e-ther - side by side on my piano keyboard. Oh God!

Музыка

Huge thanks to @hellf.o who left a comment last week asking me to hook up e-ther and MIDISID. I am only too happy to oblige.
I configured e-ther to send modwheel messages from the left hand, and set MIDISID to map modwheel to pulse width to give that characteristic SID pulse width modulation.

Having the e-ther up off the table makes the gestures appear magical. And the composition was certainly magic. Your enthusiasm is infectious. Great stuff.

Glad you liked it. You know, I intended to make a tripod mount for e-ther for a long time, it just didn't seem very important as I was happy using it sat on the desk. But since I've had it on a tripod mount, I much prefer that position and wouldn't go back now.

That was fantastic! The e-ther works so good for those slidey leads (I know the technical term is portamento but I like slidey). And the SID doing its thing as only the SID can do.

Thanks very much! e-ther is pretty hard to play if you want melodies rather than spooky effects. Your ear has to work really hard to bring that note into tune. We do it when we're singing, so I guess it's just practice. Two strategies I've used here are the long sweeps and lots of vibrato. e-ther works really well in this setup, working the pwm.

I noticed it’s hard to get exact pitches but agreed… the vibrato notes are a ton of fun.

@@musicalmiscellany I thought about turning up the vibrato on MIDISID but I knew I'd be fighting it because it's really natural to wobble your hand!

Also, it was almost by accident that I discovered that things sounded ten times better when I doubled up the sweeping sounds. You'd expect that to sound very clashy but I think that works really well.

@@midi_inMike Dean is a great one for the sweeps, I think they figure in the eighth night. Well they figure in everything he does.

hey that looks super cool! i was looking at your documentation on the e-ther and was wondering two things: 1. would it be possible (with a firmware update) to send other CC commands instead of pitch/modwheel? for example to directly control to cuttoff of your synth instead of having to bind it to your modwheel with lets say CC19. 2. is the tripod mount acrylic included or a separate product? the manual makes it sound like an extra addition but i could not find it on your tindie page

    1. yes in principle. You'll see that the configurator currently allows you to choose modwheel or expression for the left hand (vertical) and also suppress the usual note on/ note off (CC mode) if you want to use it that way. There's no reason that filter cutoff or other things couldn't be added as choices in later firmware. 2. yes, it's currently a separate product (the platforms all work differently but one of them gave me a problem with adding multiple options to the main product (eg add cleartop, add tripod mount) with different prices for each option. You'll find it on my Etsy store. It's still new, I seem to have missed adding it to Tindie. I'll do that shortly.

@@midi_in wow that was fast thanks for the clarification :) my goal with a fixed custom CC would be that it would work the same on every preset and to leave the modwheel open to other stuff do you know if etsy also provides tracking? (to the netherlands) otherwise i would prefer tindie

@@MrBattlehunter Whichever marketplace you buy from, it's me that sends it, and I will use a tracked service (Royal Mail International Tracked). One important difference that applies to you as you're in the EU is that Etsy will charge your EU VAT and pass that to the authorities. Tindie does not collect this, and if you use that option, you may or may not be asked for it before your parcel is delivered.
