Sunbeam Alpine: Fitting and Understanding Twin 40 DCOE Weber Carburettors

This video includes a complete strip down and explanation of Weber Twin 40 DCOE carbs by Weber enthusiast Trevor Hibdige. Trevor rebuilds and tunes DCOE carburettors, he machines and 3D prints unobtainable parts for them and is able to resolve all of the usual issues that these carbs present. It is a long video but has been edited down from several hours of conversation and demonstration. If you want to understand carburation better or if you are a DCOE enthusiast, this is a video that is worth settling down and watching.

Thank You for a very educational video. I have 3 Weber DCOE 40 carbs on a Datsun 240Z The car came with a mechanical and a electric fuel pump.. My problem is cold starts after weeks or long storage times To start, i run the electric pump for 10/15 seconds then turn the engine over and pump the gas. Get a lot of bucking.until the engine smooths out. I some times I can smell a small amount the fuel when before starting. I think the fuel is evaporating from the carb bowls. Thank you for any help you can provide

Hi there. DCOEs are open to the atmosphere via the float chamber vents and so do evaporate readily. As you have noticed when you switch on, the electric pump can be heard to click away which is normal as the float chambers are refilled. But a couple of things to check. The underside of the body has a square plate with four screws and the Gasket of that plate could leak. Under the plate is the float chamber debris and water collection chamber so it could be worth removing the plates and checking the condition of the gaskets and replacing. They are cheap enough and all the DCOE parts suppliers will have them. A few are Fast Road Cars Southern Carburettors Webcon Now you say you have both mechanical and electrical pumps. Presumably the electric primes the mechanical? You might check the fuel pressure at the carbs when running as the inlet pressure ideally needs to be less than 3.5 psig or the carbs can overfill particularly on bumpy roads. So the smell of petrol on starting is very common. You pump the throttle four or five times to the floor which squirts fuel via the accelerator pump directly in to the inlet which effectively is the replacement for "pull the choke out" and the engine fires and runs lumpy as hell until a few minutes when all smooths out. It helps to rattle your foot on the throttle during the initial lumpy phase as this squirts little bits of extra fuel in as it warms up. Most users of DCOEs disconnect the "starting device" which is all but useless and use the squirt the throttle to start procedure. The side effect of that is the accompanying smell of petrol which is normal.

I've just bought some reconditioned twin weber 40s, I want them fitting to my pre crossflow cortina mk1, one of them has no 998on the top, the other one has no 8l on it, I wasn't aware there were different models, I thought they could just be re jetted to suit, these carbs don't have the extra hole at the front, but when you go to the burton power website and look at the ones for the pre crossflow, it has the extra hole on the front, can you advise weather these carbs will work? They have been professionally cleaned and restored.👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
